All of the eDonkeys are dead what now?

Featured Replies

eDonkey has been closed down.

What else can I use to download things? Are there any other bittorrent type things out there?

Also torrentportal, thepiratebay and mininova

eMule still works with no problems. Apparently.

torrentbytes, araditracker

I dont suppose anyone could explain what a torrent is could they?

I used to use Kazzaa lite, but have been using Shareaza recently for downloads, this allows you to 'seed' a torrent, but i've never worked out what that is?

Shareaza still seems to be working BTW.

Had a quick Google for you, rather than trying to explain it myself:

What is BitTorrent?

BitTorrent is a protocol designed for transferring files. It is peer-to-peer in nature' date=' as users connect to each other directly to send and receive portions of the file. However, there is a central server (called a tracker) which coordinates the action of all such peers. The tracker only manages connections, it does not have any knowledge of the contents of the files being distributed, and therefore a large number of users can be supported with relatively limited tracker bandwidth. The key philosophy of BitTorrent is that users should upload (transmit outbound) at the same time they are downloading (receiving inbound.) In this manner, network bandwidth is utilized as efficiently as possible. BitTorrent is designed to work better as the number of people interested in a certain file increases, in contrast to other file transfer protocols.[/quote']

eMule is still up and running ;)

My edonkey client connects quiet happily to an ed2k server.

Thanks for that, I'm still not sure how I actually 'do' a torrent tho?

edonkey used to be a program that looked a bit like Windows explorer. To "do a torrent" you just search for something like "Top Gear RX8" and a load of files come up. You then choose to download one and it downloads it.

While downloading, other people on the network can download the bits of the file you have. The more you share the mor eit lets you have.

Oh right, thats what shareaza does, only it seems to have a separate section for torrents where you have tell it exactly where and what file you want to download?

Basically a way of sharing copyrighted data. Perhaps this would be better discussed offline ...

It doesn't have to be copyrighted data though ;) Quite a few up and coming bands publish their demo's on there for greater visibility....

Can you recommend a good, cheap, newserver? I have always used my ISP's cos it's free, but would consider paying to access more groups.
