I say black.

Looking forwards to new bonnet..... just leaves front bumper now. BTW jason.. drop me a PM on how much your wanting for it.

silver, anything else other than bare carbon will look cheap and tacky and like you are trying to copy the carbon bonnet look.

Carbon fiber, then spray it silver

I've been told I will not be able to do the bare carbon fibre look.

:eek::thumbdwn::( How come? :confused::confused:

Check this out, a leon/ibiza with carbon fibre bonnet, And its in silver:thumbup: :thumbdwn:

Silver.... with masked off Viper stripes showing the Carbon. Thin offset Clio style ones are nice too. Ideally you would black pinstripe the edges of the stripes too for a quality look. You may want to decide once the bonnet arrives and you can see where the joins are.

Silver, with some sort of logo or sign at the front leading edge, above the headlamp in naked carbon! Quite discreet but lets you know it's carbon!

Leave it standard then scare the **** out of anyone when they realise you are not 30kgs lighter.

airbrushed twin turbo v8 would be my bet :)

I like that picture idea...

the painted masked look might work...I'd get some good pics of it and do some photochops...physically print them out as big as you can and stick them on the wall for a week.

Once you've thought about it you'll know.

OK, i've read all the comments and ideas and have merged a couple for a look i think you'll like.

If the finish is good enough do the silver with lots of laquer so you can see the weave through the paint. If not then do the whole thing silver.

BUT

Also do a Mongrel logo on the passenger side just above the headlight by masking off the bonnet before spraying it then laquer the whole thing to give a good finish.

The logo could be the Skoda flying arrow with Mongrel after it.

That settles it then. The bonnet is going to be 100% silver EXCEPT for the OLD skoda logo (just the arrow & wings thing) above the front left headlight. This will rely on the bonnet being clean of patching up in that area. Can always move to dead middle or right if need be. Thinking about not bothering with the "mongrel" tag as well. Might go for just Skoda (with the Czech S squiggle too) especially if the integral bonnet grill is essentially a badgeless one.

FAO 3rd time

Well - I know the bonnet has to be painted 100%, as the carbon fibre has been patched in places. I've not seen it yet so can only go on comments from the current holder of it. :D The reason? Try 8kg instead of 25 odd.;) And in the important frontal area of the car. :D

I'm liking the dark grey idea. Might need to get some photoshopping done I reckon

ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhh thast champ,.

Its a carbon fibre affair from Germany

Where did you get it from?

I may be interested in doing such a mod, especially as it reduces weight and looks the dog's. Also, any indication of cost? I am seriously interested in this, after 3600 miles in my vRS I'm finding the understeer limits and less weight at the front can only be A Good Thing.

Cheers!

Good call Fluffmeister; I was thinking it was a pity that the carbon wasn't good enough to leave raw, and silver was the best choice for the sleeper look...

I've paid £340 all in for the bonnet, in cash to someone else who has him has a contact. Its all a little weird at first, especially as I've never met the chap who I paid the dosh to, but it's all coming together this Saturday night when I pick it up for the first time. Just need to see where I can shave off other weight. Suggestions welcome. :D

Well, some good news, some bad.

Bad news on bonnet is the whole bonnet has a thin skim of "something" on it so there is no carbon fibre showing. Therefore, it's going 100% silver

Good news is this coating cuts down weight so the bonnet will be superlight. Apparently adding the gelcoating would have been an extra £100 or so. It also has the covers that go over the headlights, so these will be chopped away and I'll be letting the bodyshop try to create a sort of eyebrows / badboy look, to make it a little more aggressive at the front. :)

Can't wait until tomorrow.

how heavy is it, Jase?

how heavy is it, Jase?

estimate of about 8kg, maybe less. :) Matey has got a golf bonnet done too by the same chap and he said it weighs about double. It will be "silly" light. The bonnet lifter action will be changed a bit, but there you go. :)

8kg???? That's absolutely sod all!! Nice one.

hey jason, you know what's lighter than a carbon bonnet? no bonnet at all...you could take the rear hatch and the doors off, too. if it lets the rain in then clingfilm weighs very little....

  • Author

You joke about clingfilm, but I can cut serious kg by getting all my glass replaced with exact copy perspex, which will look and feel the same as glass in action, but weigh a shed load less. With all the money in the world I can get all the rest of the panels on the car done in carbon fibre (wide arch WRC look too ;)) and save well over 200kg. ;)
