Is it just my Octavia??

Featured Replies

My 05 Octavia 1.9TDI seems to be plagued with problems and I am starting to regret buying it. I would like to know if anyone else has suffered from so many problems or have Skoda supplied me with a "monday morning/friday afternoon special"

1 Oil cooler fell of drivers footwell after 10 hours form new.

2 Problems engaging 3rd gear.

3 Both front windows "screech" when operated.

4 Passenger side front speaker split.

5 Hissing sound when above 50mph from rear passenger window.

6 Turbo bearings playing up requiring replacement Turbo.

7 Drivers door internal handle sheared off.

8 Front electric mirrors operating with no input from driver.

All of the problems have now been sorted by Faintree Garage, but my patience is starting to wear thin.

I have the 2.0 but I have not experienced any of these problems, the only thing I do get is creaking when cold from suspension or something when going over speed bumps leaving my house, this goes away after a while and it also rattles a bit when up to 3500-4000 revs. I feel your pain, thats a bum deal.

Thats a bumb deal and I would be pretty worried that the oil cooler just dropped off :(

If you wanted to put your mind at rest you could get an AA/RAC inspection done and then if they say the car isn't up to scratch reject complain to the garage, or possibly even consider rejecting the car any major faults are bought to light.

I have the creaking suspension which is getting worse.

It's having a load of parts replaced next week which may cure it

I had a primera like that a few years ago, everything went wrong on the bloody thing.

I fully sympathise and I hope your troubles with the car are close to being sorted. :thumbdwn:

sound like you have got a bad 'un - my symoaties and hope it sort its self out.

only problem I have had in 22000ml and a year of motoring is a faulty cruise control - a known fault that I did nothing about until the first service as I don't do many motorway miles.

I've had mine 6months - 3500 miles so far its had 2 trips to the garage:

*problem with speakers

*problem with drivers air bag

currently waiting for a sensor for the exhaust system (part coming from Germany apparently I've been waiting for nearly a month to hear its arrived) - i'm driving around with the exhaust emission light on - when it goes in I will be mentioning a rattle by my right ear seems to be have appeared since the drivers air bag wiring done and also the heat element in the driver back seat no longer works

I'm a little disappointed with the number of faults given the mileage/age.

I'm just p1ssed off with the rattles in it - sounds like a 10 year old Escort!

The hissing window is sort of an unofficial recall on the earlier models. Mine had it to. If still in warranty, the garage will replace the rear quarter light and/or window seal and will fix it. My dealer got it right on the second go though.

Drivers window was also a litle squeeky but again, dealer oiled and fixed under warranty.

Have to admit, my old shape Octy only had one problem (a new turbo), nothing else. My current one (04 reg) had has the window, wind noise, the chrome come of the strip on the dashtop box and the cargo net thing in the read whell arch break. Not as good as my old car I'm afraid, but the dealers are fine and all replaced on warranty so can't complain but Skoda are certainly letting slip or maybe it is just becuase you and I've bought 04 year models and so they were still quite new.

I noticed that myself over speed ramps when cold, but goes away after a while. For a while I thought it sounded like the Bootlid moving about on dry rubbers.

All sorts of stuff has happened to mine. It's always an adventure waiting for the next bit to drop off or stop working. Now the dealer has decided that the cambelt change interval is actually 60k miles, which is comforting to know at over 89k miles.

The cambelt thing was due to a recent(ish) change so the dealer is just passing on the new policy, IIRC it's max 4 years as well but there is a post about this somewhere here :)

Yes it's a dictation from Skoda, but the whole ownership experience has been amateurish from dealers and Skoda alike.

Update-update

Driving down the motorway this morning and the windscreen washers both packed up

Hopefully some charva will rob it off my drive or torch it for me this weekend.

I HAVE HAD ENOUGH OF THIS ####### CAR and I am going to get onto skoda uk and see what they have to say about it. I am currently in the middle of purchasing my wife a new Fabia VRS and unless I get a proper response the sale will be cancelled.

Don't blame you after that many troubles

Did you buy it new?

If so trading standards dictates a car should be fit for purpose for reasonable time which IIRC was taken to be 6 years. If skoda don't fix you up then get onto Trading standards as IMHO they should exhange it for a newer car (good will gesture) and take that one back tot he factory, pull it to pieces and find out why things fail so they can fix these issues with newer cars or fix the staff that built it.

5 Hissing sound when above 50mph from rear passenger window.

The only fault in your list that I have had is no. 5 that has been fixed.

I had a couple of other faults, a bent wiper arm and the early build heater problem where cold air hit your feet and hot air your face. Both fixed no problem.

27 months and 33,000 miles down the line I am very happy with the car.

Sounds like you have a dud.

I'll have to get mine booked in for the hissing rear passenger window. It has really become noticable these last few weeks, as if the window/door is slightly open can even hear it at 30mph now.

Only issue I have is I do not want them to replace the glass as I have had the Pentagon SupaGlass Tints fitted, is it just the rubber seals they change or the Glass itself?

Car has now done 40K and is 2 years old on 18/12/06 so still just in warranty.

Yes I did buy it from new which is why im so fed up with it, as if it was 4 or 5 years old I would have expected some of these problems. However after a phone call to the Skoda "help line" on friday I wont hold my breath as I spoke with a man who clearly didn't seem to give a t#ss and said they would get back to me in due course.

A point to note here Ladies and Gents who may be reading this, my car is quite clearly a lemon and if it wasn't for the good will of my dealer I would be up a certain creek in a special sort of canoe so with my woes in mind put a great deal of thought in to dealer choice. The "help line" don't appear to care less and cannot see why I am losing my rag with the constant journeys back and forth to the dealer. I have tried to explane that the arrangement with my employer is that I get paid for attending my work place not a Skoda dealer.

Sod the help line, you have a contract with the dealer so speak to trading standards, then go back to the dealer and reject the car (assuming TS say you can).

I totally agree about attending work not the dealers as i had a spate of that where the dealer is unable to fix anythign at all.

  • 3 weeks later...

OK - Been reading this thread with interest.

I currently have a May 2005 (05) 2.0 TDI elegance. I love driving the car, can't fault the drive, power, comfort, space or economy. However....

Since having the car its spent over 4 weeks (in total) in the garage for the following faults - in no particular order...

  • Creaking front doors (creaking when driving and doors shut, not when opening).
  • Sticking Handbreak.
  • Rattling from front doors.
  • Wind noise front windows.
  • Wind noise rear quarters*
  • Coating coming off rear offside door handle (interior).
  • Rattling speakers.
  • Rear washer pipe splitting (3 times).
  • Front nearside electric window refusing to close.
  • Rattling from overheard storage.
  • Clutch slipping.
  • Clutch failure.
  • Wont start when engine is warm*
  • Misfire when engine is warm*
  • Replaced fuel filter.
  • Very noisy fuel pump*

(* denotes - fault still exists)

Plus damage caused by dealer when in for rectification of the above faults.

  • Paint scratches
  • Oil spilled inside car
  • Cleaning fluid spilled on door trim staining it

Plus - On average, it would use 10-15 lites of fuel when in for any job.

The most notable issue was when it went in for the rear quarter windows to be replaced and came out with a note saying "Did you know the clutch was slipping?" I was told it was drivable but would need to come back in for replacement clutchunder warranty (18k miles). I managed to drive 4 miles before it gave up and I can to call Skoda Assist. After the car came out with the new clutch it had developed the misfire and starting problem.

Most frustrating... Taking the car in, leaving it all day to get a call at 1659hrs to say "Your car is ready for collection". Asking if the fault is rectified and being told "I'm only the receptionist and all the technicians have left. Arriving to collect the car and seeing "Could not reproduce fault" written on the job sheet.

So, why am I telling you this?

  • Don't accept that you bought the car and therefore it is your problem!
  • Get legal advice and make sure you keep a full record of everything done and every call you make to the dealer and Skoda UK.
  • Remain calm at all times
  • Be in possession of the facts before you call the dealer, keep them on their toes.
  • Explain that you are preparing to reject the car and ask them to consider them finding you an identical car and swapping.
  • Don't sell your car, you'll get nothing for it with the problems you have. Not declaring all the troubles or lying about them may land you in trouble.

Just for the record, I found that the techicians at my dealership couldnt keep quiet about the KNOWN faults with the early batch of A5 Octavias. Examples include;

  • "Yeah, a few of us went across to the factory and there is a room filled with rear doors with various modifications done to eliminate the wind noise, all the early cars did it"
  • "New Octavia...Rattles and leaks, bain of my life" (That was the service manager!)
  • "All these early cars develop the rattle in the doors"

Where am I know?

Well I got the dealer to swap my car for one of a similar value but 6 months newer. I wont be going there for servicing OR my next new car.

Hope this helps.

JT

PS - Please don't ask me to name the dealer, They have some decent staff and I dont want to put them at risk for the sake of shaming the crappy ones.

Good luck!

I also have had a multitude of problems that should not occur on a car just over a year old :-

Water leaking from passenger door into the footwell, sealant used on inner panel.

Buzz from dashboard at 2800 rpm, dashboard removed buzz cured but other creaks produced !

Climate control flap rod detached, constant hot air on driver side. Fixed.

Creaking suspension, not sure where its coming from yet.

Clicking from climate control flap when it has reached its position.

Seriously thinking of trading it in for a BMW or a Honda, not impressed !!!! :thumbdwn:

That comment in your post from a technician "All the early cars develop the rattle in the doors" made my eyes bulge.

Can you recall anything else that was said? Is it a problem known to Skoda UK or Czech I wonder and do they have a cure?

I pray that I have it under control in mine now. In all the cars I've had in the past nothing has got on my nerves so badly. If it returns the car will be sold and to hell with Skoda. Shame.

It is a known problem to both. They replaced door seals front and rear on my car and there are various "versions" of the door seals. If you have the patientence and energy keep bugging the dealer.

Best of luck.

I had all my door seals renewed a few weeks ago and didn't think it had cured much, but now they seem to be getting better each week. Maybe there is a settling in period? With that improving, I find my Octy 2 fun and faultless - maybe I'm lucky!
