Is it cool not to signal ?

Featured Replies

Many drivers (especially younger one's) these days seem to consider signals to other road users as unecessary - how often do you see smart **** Jack the Lad make a whizzing right turn at roundabouts without any signals start to finish? - Also, I often find myself following non-signallers for miles without nary a signal, despite numerous turns etc.

When I learned to drive (many years ago) I was instructed to always signal where such a signal would be of use to any other road user. I took it a step further and assumed there was always an unseen user or pedestrian about, therefore I always signal, even on empty roads at 4am.

The Highway Code whilst describing signals, does not specify that one should always signal. ( Any Traffic Cops care to comment on this ?).

Is it cool not to signal? or just showing two finger contempt for other road users ?

Any thoughts ?

There's a few roundabouts in my town that people seem to never indicate on, for instance i'm waiting to enter the roundabout giving way to the right to people who aren't indicating so i'm assuming they are going straight on and crossing my path. Instead they take the exit to my right without indicating left so i'm sat there like a nob giving way to no one!

I've got a suggestion that's a bit wacky but should reduce driving like this, as well as uninsured, unlicensed, underage, on phone, drunk etc driving:

Let's bring back police :cop:

I was always told to signal, except when there's no one around (including pedestrians), more people should definitely signal on roundabouts imho.

there was something reported in the Daily Mail yesterday about a Tesco survey , 42% of respondents say there is no substitute to high profile police patrols to keep the roads safe

I belive it to be that if you are in a designated lane at a Rounderbout/ road junction which has road /lanes markings [arrows, ete,] That there is no need to Indicate, I will of course stand corrected!!............:)..No dout some one will tell me otherwise......Any Driving Instructors available please .........:)

If the roundabouts you are talking about have specific lanes for the direction you are travelling in, such as park square in Sheffield, or some roundabouts that are controlled by traffic lights (often motorway junctions) with lanes specifically marked, then you are correct, a signal wouldn't be ness, but on 'normal' roundabouts signals are vital, or the roundabout doesn't work properly! (as someone else said, sat there waiting for no-one comming round ect, my learners do this, they don't have enough experiance to judge the direction the car will go, so rely on the person sinalling correctly to judge) you should signal left as you are passing the exit prior to the one you intend to take (often not possible on mini roundabouts, as denoted by the sign that is a blue circle with three chasing white arrows)

as someone else said, a signal should be used where ness to help other road users, but isn't ness if there is no-one around (including pedestrians)....

I agree.

I passed +2 years ago and I agree, signalling is terrible on the roads. Like you I signal at 2am on an empty road where there is nothing there beacuse I dont always know if there is anything there.

But, I still find people not indicating on roundabouts, junctions and other places which Pi55es me off so much I either :finger: give em the finger or toot the horn (I know, road rage but I cant help it:D !

Unfortunatly, I now see it as a fact of life that there is idiots out there that drive with fogs, dont indicate, have no insurance, have lights out, and drive dangerously. :o

If there is no-one about to benefit from a signal, whats the point in doing it? I don't. It shows good observation - you've used all the mirrors before the manoeuvre so driven safer. Obviously if there is someone, I signal.

Something I picked up from the IAM course.

I find I signal out of habit even when there is no one else on the road.

It's a habit to indicate for me, also I indicate more than I should in certain situations according to the UK road rules, as I was tought in The Netherlands where if you don't indicate/have lane discipline you'll end up crashing in no time at all...

A lot also seems to depend on where you live in the UK, I've seen some disgustingly bad driving and some really excellent driving. Guess where the worst traffic tends to be...

Hi always indicate and for some reason do it if no other driver is around (JUST HABBIT I GUESS:confused: ) There is nothing worse than sat at the entrance to a round about with cars not indicating and having to guess which direction they are going !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Very few drivers signal on our small-ish local roundabouts. One problem is that a lot of them are built off-centre so that there is a natural "straight on" route (where signalling is technically not required IIRC). The trouble is, that right-turning traffic doesn't bother to indicate either, and as they have right of way, one has no alternative but to slow down or stop until sure. about the oncoming driver's intentions.

Given that one would have slowed down anyway approaching a small-ish roundabout (and thus so would have follow-on traffic), it's not really a problem. On bigger roundabouts, it's deffo a case of all three mirrors...

Regards

Mo

I always thought you must signal when you are exiting the roundabout, ie just after the turn off previous to yours?

I know what you mean about the "straight on" thing, so I tend to let people off for that one as its easily done. Especially on mini roundabouts.

I always signal too , even when no one else is around , its a force of habit to me , and it is a habit I wish more drivers would pick up. Living in a small town where everyone knows everyone else I can tell you that the usual suspects who never signal and almost always drive too fast and some never wear a seatbelt are the same people who behave in an arrogant manner when they are not in a car. Anyway , why should you have to guess which exit a car is going to take on a roundabout , its like playing russian roulette with a big metal coffin!..and all for the sake of shoving a little plastic stalk up or down , even the laziest scumbag in the world can't be that lazy surely?

I signal all the time just out of habit, even if completely alone on a motorway! and im very young :D

Makes me seethe,( sound like Victor Meldrew!!!!) What is up with these cretins? Trying obviously to conserve energy, prevent glaciers melting, global warming etc.More like preventing their alternators going tits up!!!!! Its definately getting worse and the likelihood of me getting an ASBO is increasing daily !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Bunch of Mongs the lot of them.

No offence meant, just venting my spleen in this 'free' country ish

I agree with the original poster (from first hand experience, as he's my dad!). It extends to beyond roundabouts however. My commute to work is 99% motorway with some dual carriageway thrown in for good measure - and not a signal trip is made without some a**hole making quick and inconsiderate moves without signalling. I try and make a point of signalling all the time, even around the estate I live on, for the pedestrians benefit if nothing else.

If everyone signalled, perhaps I might have an idea where you (the person in front) may be going!! We're not bloody mind readers, and I wish other people appreciated this too!!

Also agreed that it's one or more of arrogance, incompetence and sheer laziness to never signal. OTOH it's good driving to not signal in circumstances where you know that there's no-one who will be in a position to see your signal or at least be affected by you, before you finish the manoevre.

Of coure, this demands that you be able to see several seconds along each road at a junction.

I has seen people not indicate, not really put it donw to age.

I love it how older people say young people are ignorant, when old people are soo damn ignorant there selves. :P

Down here in Kent there are very few people indicate, most don't even use mirrors, and un unbelievable ammount of people think using the left lane to turn right is ok, totally shocking, thank god we are moving away, bring on the autobahn!!!!

its not exactly hard to indicate, if you driving correctly your hand should be almost next to the indicators.

using the left lane to turn right is one of the most dangerous things I've seen growing on our roads..... AGAIN more traffic police and LESS cameras........ :finger:

Some idiot was in the left lane earlier indicating right and went left!
