Cancel my order?

Featured Replies

Reading through the comments on here, I'm getting more and more worried that no-one appears to have a reliable Octavia and are 100% happy with their car! I'm beginning to wonder whether I should cancel my order ( which has been delayed by another month!) and go for a safe bet like a Focus again. I thought VW designed cars were supposed to be well built?

I think you have to balance the posts about problems with the fact that people seem much more likely to come on here when they have a problem, rather than just to say how well there car is running.

Part of the reason for this thread

I think you'll find alot of people will tell you the bad bits - they like to bitch about them. However not many tell you the good bits.

I've now had 2 Octavia's - a MK1 & MK2 -- Both 100% reliable and I would definately buy another.

Well, got mine new in September this year. 100% reliable and I'm very annoying person for all dealers that I have had cars from (VW, Toyota, Renault...). I visit them for smallest problem I have. I never wait for service to complain. But, this one is perfect. It's still new, 3.000 km.

If you look closely, you can see that 90% of problem cars were purchased one year or less after model first showed up. I've had that bad experience once in my life and now I have golden rule:

After new model comes out, wait for two years if you want reliable car and buy it just then.

The best car I've ever had was one VW Golf 1.6i MK4 that I got just two months before they stopped producing it. Done 45.000 km before sold it and it was impressive. No single noise, squeek, rattle... just PERFECT.

So, that's the lesson I've learned.

And trust me, if you go for Focus you'll see what the problem car realy is...

Remember, it's the dissatisfied who post their complaints. I'd rather go with the JD Power survey of customer satisfaction, where the Skoda Octavia won the Bronze Award. I quote from the "What Car" website:

BRONZE AWARD

Skoda drops one place from 2005, but still does enough to pick up the bronze award. There are just two models listed in this year's survey. Although neither the Fabia supermini nor the Octavia family car wins its class, both come close and post impressive scores in most areas of assessment.

Skoda dealers clearly know a thing or two about customer service, while low running costs also help Skoda towards the top of the table.

As Skoda owners will tell you, very little ever goes wrong with these cars. Mechanical parts are robust, and there are few niggles inside the cabins. Strong scores for the way the cars drive also help to push Skoda well clear of some of motoring's bigger names in this year's survey.

Go ahead and buy one - our L&L 2.0TDi DSG estate has never given us a moment's worry and returns 41.mpg.

I've got a slightly annoying rattle in the dash. That's all after 8 months.

I am looking at buying, i have also noticed a lot of problems people have posted. My dealer is a two hour round trip , so it does put doubts in your head i agree.

100% happy with car and 110% happy with dealer.

Persevere with your order, it will be worth it in the end

As others have said most people will only post up with a problem... its not often you will find a post... "My octy is working fine today, discuss..."

I'm on my 2nd Octavia and the only problem i've had with either is a faulty Cruise Control switch on the current car - replaced under warranty and not an issue with later cars.

Also AutoExpress owner satisfaction survey - Octy 2 second only to Honda 2000 sports car. Mine very reliable and great fun to drive - not bad for a "family car". Occasional door seal squeak only complaint, and that is minor - so I obviously can't find anything serious to gripe about. And that boot swallows almost anything!!

Having owned or ran 5-6 VAG cars since 1986, I can certainly say all the VW Golfs I owned were very good, and where I had odd problems (like broken coilpacks, anyone?) the dealers were pretty good and well-informed. I suspect the VW dealers are better trained than most Skoda dealers owing to being established longer.

I currently have an Octavia II Elegance which so far has been pretty good, but it is definitely not as well-assembled as recent Golfs, and if you look beneath the surface you can see where they save money.

Although the Focus has good reputation, all the ones I have driven or been in, seem to create the illusion of quality quite well, but in the end they are crummier than any VAG products. I'm sure if you research a Focus orientated board, you will see plenty of complaints from users

In my experience you are not buying a more reliable car with a Ford. This site concentrates on the problems people have because they are looking for solutions, hence you see the negative side.

Buy the car you like, reliability is no worse than any other european manfacturer.

Though if you are worried about reliability, buy a Honda or Toyota.

My vRS is 100% reliable thus far, it was only hospitalised once by a fuse blowing in the steering column which was not really the car's fault.

12K miles and driven fairly hard (by my standards that is), so far can't really fault it, I would have another that much is certain.

Briskoda members get together for meets quite frequently (there's one planned on the IoW in January, for instance). Come along and meet us, and see the cars in the flesh. You'll get a totally different picture.

Though if you are worried about reliability, buy a Honda or Toyota.

When ordered my Octy, I sold Toyta Avensis 1.8 VVTi owned from new, 21 months old, 19.000 km on the clock. Gave me so many troubles, so many visits to totaly uncompetent Toyota dealer, many problems not solved with response: "It's normal" (cracking steering wheel, alarm going off by itself, rusty wheel nuts, buzzing dasboard, permanent moisture in main beams etc etc). Had to sell it because I couldn' stand it anymore. Lost a lot of money but learned a lesson about Toyota. Now I'm back to VAG and it feels good again (owned many VAG cars in the past).

Thank you & obrigado alll for your comments. When I test drove the Octavia I fell in love with it. Just hope it lives to initial expectations!

I have great experience with cars, as ex-mechanic and ex-rally driver and if this car keeps on serving me the way it did up to date, I'll stick with Skoda. To be honest, I'd rather own Passat with same engine or Audi A4 but don't have that much money. By the way, even if I could afford it, I would think twice because Skoda gives me what I need for much less money.

mk 1 octy no probs, mk 2 vRS oh dear only does 23 mpg can 6000 rpm have anything to do with this? buy a Ford PAH sir PAH I SAY  I am heading to IOW in furb vRS in Jan, feel free to join us for a drive out and a convo :D

just to prove a point I have put up a thread on how I have had no problems in six years with Skoda cars ......

no one is interested

I used to post about how reliable my Mk1 octy was on a regular basis.

Unfortunately I can't do the same for the Mk2.

There haven't been any serious problems that stopped me from driving it but I've had 5 separate faults in 7 months and two seem to have fixed themselves , two have been fixed by the dealer and the last is still ongoing after three visits.

Now on my SEVENTH Skoda and in all that time only TWO faults but none mechanical Buy with confidence.

12K+ trouble free miles so far:thumbup: . My mkIV Golf GTtdi broke down 3 times in it’s first year however.

The Octy is the most accomplished car I’ve ever owned and that includes 12 others.

I suppose I can not be the best of people to say the vehicle is the best, because I have only done 7800 miles in the first year, but I have been in and out of hospital over that time frame.

I had one problem, no gas in the Air Con system, but it was quickly detected and fixed in a couple of hours. Other than that it goes well, is easy to drive and does what I expect from it.
