Anyone know what 'dieseling' means

Featured Replies

Car just broke down............ will post more details later. AA man said the engine had been dieseling owing to the fact that when I removed the ignition key, the engine wouldn't stop (until it ran out of fuel) - 2.0TDI Elegance

Trust me, my car ran on for at least 5mins whilst filling the entire road with white smoke!! - engine was running at what seemed like 4000 rpm

It used to be quite a common trait of diesels that they would rattle on for a few seconds after the ignition was turned off.

As there are no spark plugs then as long as there is fuel then it will keep burning and the engine will keep going.

If it goes for more than a second or so then it's getting fuel from somewhere it shouldn't. Either that's diesel thats flowing or quite often oil that's being burnt.

From your more detailed description of what was happening it sounds very likely that it was oil leaking into the cylinders.

Assuming there is nothing in front of you then put it in fourth , keep your foot on the brake and lift the clutch to stall it.

Presumably it

Often happens when a Turbo has gone allowing oil the pass from the bearing housing into the cylinders.

Ahhh yes, that

Yup, and it will most likely keep going till all the oil is gone and the engine gone pop.

Dealer told me to drive car to develop original fault.

Driving home tonight car running fine then lost all power. Managed to crawl to a lay-by and smoke puthering from exhaust. Turned off engine and removed key but engine carried on running - revs increased and ran at a constant 4000 rpm (approx). Car eventually stopped running after about 5 mins but couldn't see car for white cloud filling area as far as the eye could see!!

When smog cleared, looked under bonnet and as you look, the coolant reservoir on LHS of engine but the lid from coolant reservoir on RHS wing - it had blown off completely. Engine completely devoid of both coolant and oil.

Any bright ideas?? Engine now sounds like a very large bag of very large spanners when cranked over!! AA man says its 'screwed', think that must be a technical term.

That's not a technical term, it's an accurate one.:(

I think it's safe to say you have developed the fault.

Is that dealer totally stupid ?!!

If that kinda thing happens you don't advise customers to just run it until it happens again, that just makes sure the engine is killed properly

Sincerely I hope you get the engine replaced under warranty :)

Company car so if not warranty then covered by lease company - ouch!!

Car not 2 years old till Jan '07.

Still can't get over the amount of smoke this thing can generate. Awesome!!

without seeing , hearing or experiencing any of the smoke , i can confidently say your engine+turbo will be FUBARed , we've had a couple of Ford Mondeos go up like that in the workshop , the only way to stop them is to put it in gear , brakes on as hard as poss , then let the clutch up to stall the engine

i'm glad it wasn't your car , i bet the lease company will be pleased when they find out the dealer said drive the car to let a fault develop

I was concerned myself about what the dealer said so I phoned the lease company - they had exactly the same attitude and said it's ok as the car is covered by warranty anyway.

Oh dear indeed. Almost certainly an engine replacement needed there methinks.

Old diesels had a part on the engine specifically to stop the dieseling run on.

If your car had shown this behaviour i would have at the least checked this out, i'd be fairly certain you will be saying hello to a new car or engine.

"hello , is that Skoda , can I have a new engine please?"

Any idea of cost to replace engine - just curious.

Also should Skoda provide me with a relief vehicle with the car being within the 3 year warranty??

Yes they should!

Did you get that in writing ?

NO ! Oh dear :( :o

And how many miles has this car done?

Let's hope it's not over 60,000 miles  . Hope you get it sorted swiftly

If my car ever did this, I would grab a rag from the boot and smother the air intake pipe to stall it. That may at least save the engine in the long run, and limit the damage to just the turbo or similar.

Smart think is to just put it in top apply brake and take foot off the clutch so stall it. The engine can easily over rev in this situation, so killing it as quickly as possible is the key thing.
