Films that test a subwoofer

Featured Replies

I'm watching War of the Worlds now which has an excellent low frequency track that really gets the floor shaking without distortion.

What other films do you recommend for annoying the neighbours?

Matrix- Lobby scene especially, Die Hard 3

Another vote for Fast and Furious Tokyo Drift, the dog still has not recovered since I played that at christmas:rofl:

Other films to try ;Gone in 60 seconds & The Rock:thumbup:

also the chemical brothers do a song called bass test and that really will test any sub and speaker setup. Try it is awsome

Ive got a track called Woofer Cooker, its painfull, blew a friends subwoofer up tho :S

I've always like das boot to make sure I've got my left and right correct. Does quite well on the sub, although I suspect it's not as good as the latter films. u571 is on the shelf, but, well it's not cricket is it as mentioned.

I seem to recall first contact was a an audiophiles suggested dvd, I suspect this has moved on somewhat now though.

Predator, Terminator.

Anything with explosions post 1990 production.

got to agree with Mil , the scene in Predator where they are shooting into the forest and i had to turn down Terminator 3 the other day as i thought the walls were coming down

Master and Commander is a good one...

BOSE use it alot to demo their systems

Chem bros' under the influence to get a good bass line for music.

Cranberries "everybody else is doing it..." album for pace and treble/mid

Lot of films mentioned above plus the lord of the rings III, priates has some good bits in it for positioning and star trek II or IV are also good :)

Another vote for gladiator here with DTS - the second track in, fight scene where he says to "unleash hell" and they fire the flaming catapaults always gives a nice low "whooph" noise.

And Blade (first one), bit where the new order track is played (which became the public domain remix) with the bloodbath banners is quite thumpy, although you'd probably get the same effect by just playing "operation blade" at loud volume

My setup is mostly sony seperates with jpw sub and fronts in a 25ft x 12ft living room, spaced at each corner with the tv, sub and centre in the middle of a bay at one end - great for watching films loud when swmbo isn't around!

years ago my friend used the heat shoot out scene to show me how loud his stereo could get and a passing police patrol in a car thought it was real......

Sony Amp , Acoustic Energy AE120 front speakers (huge things they are :D) , yamaha centre , mission rears and an REL sub.

I've watched a few of the films that have been mentioned so far and have plenty more to go yet :)

My sub is only two 6.5" drivers but it's capable of making the sofa rattle and that's 4 feet away on a solid concrete floor  .

I know it porbably not the best film but i always enjoyed the sound of Pearl Harbour on my home cinema system.

Interesting thread

U-571, pah, dig yourself in with Das Boot. If you can live with the german soundtrack (English subs), it's a real corker. Depth charges and surroung steering is very good.

Saving Private Ryan is great too for sound, but the picture is intentionally rather gritty.

James, I agree with you regarding Cars. A whopping soundtrack with great bass as the cars go round the speedways.

I watched Hunt for Red October the other day on my home cinema setup, and have to say the DD is very good. For example, during all the sub scenes, there's a discreet, but very present low level rumble you only get to feel rather than hear. Gives a very good claustrophobic quality to the film :)

Unfortunately, I do find lots of films have massively varying gains on LFE, so whilst the rest of the speakers are pretty well calibrated, the LFE goes all over the place, often resulting in having to adjust the settings.

Oodles of bass isn't technically or acoustically good stuff if it's uncontrolled and spilling out all over the place. Whilst you may get the initial "cor blimey" impression, it's the subtle nuances than can make you really nauseous when set up correctly. I should know

But then again, I do have a Paradigm Servo 15  :D
