I think my car is brilliant

Featured Replies

It's currently on about 32,000 miles and after spending 5 hours and 280 miles in it yesterday with only about a ten minute break I thought i'd post on how good it is.

I arrived home, got out, had a little stretch and still felt as though i'd only spent about an hour in it, not five.

The auto wipers worked flawlessly, only had to turn the sensitivity up a notch, once, in the whole journey.

The trip computer read an average of 53mpg for the whole trip, this ranged from stuck in traffic on the M25 crawling along to 90+ mph blasts.

The Cruise control helped keep an average speed on the clearer stretches.

The engine although only the 1.9 has suprising acceleration in 5th at 70mph allowing you lazy overtaking. I'll imagine 2.0 TDI owners have to concentrate not to accelerate straight into the back of the car they are overtaking!

The boot is huge and hasn't failed to swallow up whatever load i've thrown at it.

The stereo although not as good as the BOSE setup in my bosses Audi is more than adequate, radio reception is virtually flawless and the 6cd changer is a definate bonus.

Climate set to 22 when I first got in then adjusted down to 20 after a few miles then never touched the whole of the way home. Set on auto, no messing about with where the breeze comes from or what the fan speed is.

One touch indicators got a hammering as I drove through the rush hour traffic.

The silver seems to look clean for a long time from a distance, if you look closely you'll find it;s really mucky :D

Rear parking sensors I don't think I could live without now, they make parking so much easier and quicker. Don't think front parking sensors would be much of an advantage.

Problems? Not really, wish I had built in Sat Nav and the 17s certainly look better but that's lack of budget rather than problems.

Erm, erm, oil needs topping up too often?

Up to now, i'd choose another one.

:iagree:

So glad I got 17ins with Sports Susp.

But all in all Good Post

I get the same with my Fabia to be honest. So thought I'd draw up a comparison to get mongrel/octy 2 TDI idea.

"I arrived home, got out, had a little stretch and still felt as though i'd only spent about an hour in it, not five." - Agreed, Seats seem to be pretty good in all Skodas

"The auto wipers worked flawlessly, only had to turn the sensitivity up a notch, once, in the whole journey." Have none, but the aquapel works well in the rain, so don't use them much.

"The trip computer read an average of 53mpg for the whole trip, this ranged from stuck in traffic on the M25 crawling along to 90+ mph blasts." - Yup :D I'm usually around the 55mpg area for a clear 80mph cruise dictated blast.

"The Cruise control helped keep an average speed on the clearer stretches." Indeed, and when overtaking something doing 0.5mph less than you, you can blat up 10mph, then just ease off and cruise catches up where you left off without touching a thing.

"The engine although only the 1.9 has suprising acceleration in 5th at 70mph allowing you lazy overtaking. I'll imagine 2.0 TDI owners have to concentrate not to accelerate straight into the back of the car they are overtaking!" I have to be careful I must admit. :o I love 6th gear pull from 70mph.

"The boot is huge and hasn't failed to swallow up whatever load i've thrown at it." Ummm I can't really say that mine has, but as I often run with no backseats, it's not an issue, I got a fabia bonnet in mine, flat, and the "long" way round.

"The stereo although not as good as the BOSE setup in my bosses Audi is more than adequate, radio reception is virtually flawless and the 6cd changer is a definate bonus." - I only listen to MP3 compilations, and have uprated door speakers and tweeters, so it can sound really nice.

"Climate set to 22 when I first got in then adjusted down to 20 after a few miles then never touched the whole of the way home. Set on auto, no messing about with where the breeze comes from or what the fan speed is. " _ Have no climate which can be a bit hit & miss in comparison. Usually I set the temp to 18-20deg C and just leave it. I'm not too temp sensitive so rarely have to touch it.

"One touch indicators got a hammering as I drive through the rush hour traffic." Have none of that. Wouldn't mind one-touch. I think it would be a nice add-on.

"The silver seems to look clean for a long time from a distance, if you look closely you'll find it;s really mucky " I concur. Mine's silver, and it's not been washed for 2 weeks. If I took a pic out my bedroom window, it would look clean. It's not. :D

"Rear parking sensors I don't think I could live without now, they make parking so much easier and quicker. Don't think front parking sensors would be much of an advantage." Well, I have a short-ar5e car, and decent visibility. I can see why they'd be so useful on an octy estate. :)

"Problems? Not really, wish I had built in Sat Nav and the 17s certainly look better but that's lack of budget rather than problems. Erm, erm, oil needs topping up too often?" - Can't think of many as I've modded mine so hard. Having issues with a couple of mods - the coilovers need to go a.s.a.p. I would have liked a little more equipment as std, like rear elec windows. a sunroof would have been nice, etc etc. But I love the car the way it is.

I agree with the above comments.

I'm driving by myself to Aviemore in March, 370 miles and a mixture of A roads and motorways . . . should be a good test! I'm not expecting decent fuel economy though unless I nanny it. :o

Can't agree for the Octavia vRS......The drivers seat IMO is to narrow and therefore uncomfortable after about 45 mins, leading to muchos shuffling about.

This thread makes a nice change to hear people stating how happy they are with their cars :)

wish I had built in Sat Nav and the 17s certainly look better but that's lack of budget rather than problems.

I have 17' (225-45/17) and they transmit a lot of road noise. I contacted my salesman and as my car has only 3000km told him if there was somebody interested who's getting new car with 16' I'd swap with him free of charge.

The rest, I agree with you. I was VW customer for 20 years and then went to Toyota Avensis. Now, I'm back on VW group and will not go away, ever (Avensis was disaster...)

Yep - nice to hear some positive comments

Good to hear you're still enjoying it Dave :)

Did sit in a VRS - found the same. whether that is due to my large frame I don't know.

That's why I bought an elegance...

I admit I PX'd my Mk1 vRS for a Mk2 Elegance to exchange grunt for comfort. It still has plenty of go out on the motorway, handles better too.

Gotta agree, I regularly do 3 or 4 hour journeys without a break and get out feeling perfectly well. I obviously stop for the obligatory coffee if needed though!

just picked my new octavia up drove from brighton to germany about 6 hours from calais and the car felt great and very comforatble the fuel was pretty good to

while we're on a roll: have had my octy six months now and........love it!

comfortable ride (195-65-15 versus previous car's 225-35-18 a.k.a. knee-breakers)

handles fine

el-mucho grande boot (which i need)

good headroom (which i also need)

good build quality (at last no more ford & vauxhall style squeaks and rattles)

decent fuel econ (currently getting no lower than 40.5mpg from the 1.6fsi, again versus previous car's 26mpg)

don't think i missed anything, roll on the miles

  • 2 weeks later...

I also adore my 2.0 diesel octy mk 2.

Very comfortable, plenty of room for passengers. Elegance model so auto dimming rear view mirror, cruise control, reverse parking sensors etc as standard.

The stereo is not top notch, certainly not as good as my old car, but still good nevertheless. I really can't find much to criticise about it. The power is great, ride great and fuel economy fantastic.

I recently drove from Wrexham to Coventry and booted it all the way. Anyone who knows the A5 will know what a pain the roundabouts are, but even at full pace I still managed to average 39 to the gallon. If I drive it gently, I get in excess of 55 to the gallon.

Nuff said
