Another audio question

Featured Replies

Hello all,

Octavia 05 plate 1.9 Elegance - as far as I know the audio system is the older stream model - i.e. non-mp3.

The car has a 6 disc changer in the boot. One of my friends has told me that there still might be an additional aux connector on the back of the audio unit.

Can anybody confirm that this is the case? If I have the changer attached - will it use another connector on the back on the audio unit?

No there isn't, Im afraid. Your only choices are either lose the autochanger and buy an adapter (denision ipod available from your local dealer or aux input lead from all good in car entertainment outlets and a few rubbish ones as well (or eBay)) or go the much more expensive route that a few of us on here have done and buy a MFD2 Sat Nav unit and a little box of tricks that fools the unit into thinking the tv tuner box is connected so you get to keep the changer and have an aux input too.

Check out the MFD2 is in thread for more info

So - am I right in thinking the CD changer connectors are just standard phono connectors? If so - I don't mind losing the CD changer in order to connect an MP3 player...

6 discs or 40GB's of MP3's....ummm no brainer!

ALso - I could split the input or buy an adapter as you say!

Thanks for replying!

No, its a non standard connector. You need a small interface to plug into the HU. This will fool the stream into thinking the changer is still present, and give you the inputs you need.

Cool - thanks! Any idea where I can get such an interface and what I need?

What MP3 player are you planning to use?, for an ipod you can get a dension icelink.

Another option instead of replacing the changer is to get an FM transmitter. Belkin do several, they are now legal in the UK making them readily available. Just tune to an empty frequency on FM and setup the transmitter.

It's not an iPod - it's a Creative Touch player...

Don't like those FM transmitters - tried out a few and they've all gone back 'cus they are crap!

All I want to do is kinda run my own 3.5mm jack socket / plug!

Like I said check the MFD2 is in thread along with several others, but ebay is a good start search for VW or skoda mp3 input or similar and something may appear. be warned tho that the streams cd changer connector changed during 2005 so you need to remove your unit and take a look at the connector. Again this has been covered all before so I politely suggest you make use of the forums search engine and it will give you all the answers you seek. Try searching 'MP3 install'.

Lee you need the quadlock variant. I think it would mean losing the use of the CD changer.

I suppose it may need coding as you'll be removing the CD changer from the HU although if it's occupying the CD changer position and mimicing a changer then it won't but it won't matter in this case anyway, it won't cause you an issue.

The two flying leads do look like power to me.

Thanks for the quick reply...

So variant 3 is the one I need? So where do the two fly leads plug in?

I assume the yellow connector in my pic is the one that gets pulled out?

Edit - I see there are others on ebay - some just cables and connector - no box of tricks - I assume that the bit that has the electronics to emulate the changer and wouldn't work for me? Also - how much do these things go for - how much should I expect to pay??

By the sounds of it Lee has the same Headunit as me...but I don't have a CD Changer. I suppose I'd also get away with using the ebay VrStu suggested, albeit the radio might need to be coded for it.

Lee if you get it can you let me know how it goes ?

The power supply is where you'll stumble. The Octy II uses CANBUS to switch the radio on and off and hence there is no traditional switched supply to the radio.

A few ways of addressing this -

Wire it to the radio on a permanent live and assume it draws so little power as not to be a real problem.

Wire it to a switched live such as the one on the Climatronic Panel.

Wire it to a switched live from the fuse panel.

If you want pinouts then look at my MFD2 guide.

As for price well that's up to you, short of coming to your place and fitting it I think I've provided you with a reasonable amount of info to make a decision.

Thanks for the ebay link VRStu...

I have taken the plunge and purchased one 38.50EUR (about £25)...

It comes with full instructions, but don't like messing with car audio electrics so will need to find somebody to help me if I run into issues...

Would the local dealer help with this or would they get the **** and change me a small fortune?

I would think an independant would be better.

Bump!

The adpater arrived today! Yay! All I need to do now is get it installed....

It has one connector and a black wire - there are some instructions with it but they are in German. I've asked the seller if he has some in English!

But basically from what you guys have said here - is it just a case of pluging it in and wiring to the switched live? That last bit is the bit I'll stumble with!

Also - where's best to poke the aux cable out to? Glovebox or somewhere else?

I would really like it to go to the jumbo box but I'm not sure how / where to run the cable!

Help!!

Arrrgghh!! Seller says the black wire is actualy a ground wire! That could have been err interesting ]! lol!

Right - so any ideas where I should attach the ground wire too?

Thanks

Lee

Please forgive me but I can't help myself. :P

Ground!!

Ground is often referred to as Earth if that helps.

Well yeah - I know that much - but I mean where physicaly! Is there an earth point on the back of the Steam that I can screw it too?

What about the running the aux to the jumbo box? Is that a major dismantle project??

Lee

Please don't take this the wrong way but if you aren't capable of identifying a ground connection on the back of your radio I would suggest you have someone fit the device for you. You could do some damage if you get it wrong.

You will need to run a wire from the main fuse box to get a switched live as well.

Sound advice VRSTu! Not taken the wrong way at all!

I know what one looks like - my electronics knowledge is not that bad!

It's not a hard job at all but you'd need to remove a bit of dashboard trim, gain entry to the fuse box and fit a wire into it. I use the spare marked for the telephone.

  • Author

Errrr - thats for the the switched live - I don't need one. There's only one connector and one black wire - the black wire goes to earth and the connector speaks for itself!

Hopefully should be a 10 min job. The hardest part is deciding where to run the aux cable to! (scratches head)...

I thought you needed to power it as well.
