I was coming back along the A303 in Sommerset when I saw a lady hitch hiker wanting to go to Cornwall. I said that I could drop her as far as Exeter, so she hopped in.

We introduced ourselves and made some chit chat. I asked her where she had been, and she said she had been to Winchester where she went to University. She told me that goes back every few weeks to this hill side near a forest where she camps because it is so beautiful. She went on to tell me that she had seen loads of ghosts and faries up there.

Okay then...

hitchhikers....... dangerous stuff

Rutger Hauer , anyone??

That girl doesn't seem right!!!

I only hitch-hiked once. Me and a friend were walking in Scotland and realised we'd left some stuff at the Youth Hostel, so we walked down to the main road and hitched back. The fact it took about 15 minutes to drive the distance it had taken us all day t walk was too depressing for words!!!

But it's way too freaky a means of getting about for me to consider doing it again...

No, definitely not in this day and age! :(

Chris

I succumbed to the last option, although I never have.

No with the weirdo's out there now days it's just not worth it.............even if they are cute!

not worth it.............even if they are cute!

Especially if their boyfriend hiding in the ditch with a knife appears when you stop

Chris

No.

Get a job and pay your way like the rest of us..........p0nces!!

I've never done it but I'd consider picking up someone hiking on trade plates because unfortunately for them they're just doing their job! A colleague regularly picks up people on trade plates to relieve boredom

I've picked up a few in the past , either guys with trade plates or eastern european couples with backpacks as it happens

Wouldn't dare for fear of being car jacked :(

Shame, would be great in an ideal world.

I wouldn't in this day and age :thumbdwn: , but I have done once before, many years ago - lone female who had missed her bus so I took her as far as I could before our paths went different ways.

Had a similar situation to this recently after working a club night over xmas, some girl from weston had got into an argument with here "so called" mates and been turfed out of the club, was hysterical and crying with no coat or money and looking for a lift home.

Some other local girl (from the other side of town who also had no money  ) befriended her and spent a good half hour trying to persuade us all to give here a lift.

Thing is, all of use were going to taunton / ilminster direction and she wanted to go to flipping weston, at 4:30am, whilst extremely drunk (and possibly pilled up too).

All of us are either married or spoken for too, no way was I going to do it for a stranger - if I'd known her I would've done, although we also had to consider the late hour and lack of sleep!

Felt guilty but ultimately it's not my responsibility!

They may just be doing there job, but they are also given the train/bus fare to get home!!

Get this all the time as a cabbie, my usual response is something along the lines of -

It's not my, or anyone elses fault but your own that you chose to spend your last few pounds on another drink/pill/kebab, instead of saving it for a taxi, so it's tough luck, take responsibility for yourself and walk home.

They usually continue the sob story at this point, adding things like, "but you cant let a girl walk home on her own/ I could get raped" etc etc.

Sorry love, I dont know you, I dont really care if you get raped or not, your not my responsibility, or my problem, now f*ck off.

 fair play mate, giving people free lifts doesn't put food on your table does it?

Not always true. I have a friend worked for Ford direct and after delivery they were on their own.

Thats nonsense - everyone knows fairies live in valleys and ghosts live on hilltops - only Imps and Elves live on hillsides !!!!!

methinks Fairygirl may have been taking too many happypills:cool:

I almost always used to stop for hitchhikers mainly as I used to hitch a lot when I was younger. I know its always a risk and am now more selective about who I stop for - but still have a general respect for others' plight despite the unfortunate examples we now have of people taking advantage of it

Edit: one that did almost put me off was picking up a lone female as I was going home and finding out that she was a "swampy" character living in the trees in an area near Canterbury which was potentially going to get a Center Parcs type place built on it ... boy did she smell, took weeks to get rid of it :)

I'm sorry in this day and age and you are either going to hitchhike or be the person to give them a lift you are just plain mental (not literally).

especially in a Fabia VRS....they may dirty the seats

When I was in my teens out and about with friends we did give lifts to lone people once or twice but I definetely would not do it now. Another time also in my teens after clubbing myself and my friend found ourselves in a predicament and without a lift about twelve miles from home in the early hours with no buses.

We started to walk home and after about four miles or so was approached by the Police asking if we were a couple of girls that had gone missing. After they were satisfied we weren't they made us promise we wouldn't hitch and took us about two miles down the road to the main bus station. It was sunday morning and no buses for hours so we began our walk home again. We got about another mile down the road and had really had enough so thought sod it lets hitch, the first car we stuck our thumb out to was one of the Police officers that had stopped us :o He was on his way home and took us with him. I have never done it again since and never will.

Once, Never again !!

Never done it never have a wish to do either hitch or pick up.

Nor does it buy my children clothes etc etc etc.

But honestly, some people seem to think I'm sitting out there all night for the fun of it:rolleyes:

I'm not a f*cking charity, would they go into Tesco and say "I haven't got any money, but can I have this widescreen TV anyway"?

Peoples stupidity astounds me sometimes, it always seems to be my fault that they haven't got the money to get home?

I quite agree, my experience was almost intimidating with the girl repeatedly using the "x or y might happen to her" excuse when she's the one with no means of getting home  .

Worst bit was them following me to my car and stating "oh look this man will take us in his nice car" - like feck, I got in, locked the doors and hot footed it :finger:
