Fab vRS ? Kettle whistling sound 2 mins after starting

Featured Replies

Out of curiousity,

What is going on with the 'kettle whistling' sound that begins a minute or two after starting up.

I noticed last night, zero degrees, this also coincided with white steam / vapour issuing from the exhaust.

BTW The noise does disappear after after several minutes.

Yes - I know about the 'pump priming squishing' on startup.

Egr

I think it's the fuel system pressurising.

I`ve had this whistling sound since the car was new last Nov, it can easily be heard in first and second at low revs. Presume its the exhaust note and nothin to bother about.

Sounds like the turbo spooling. Mine does it too...

my air-con pump somtimes makes funny whistling noises at low speeds

mine does it too.id only worry if it stopped whistling:thumbup:

I have recently noticed a similar sound on my 2.0i. It's more like a constant peep - and not just when starting from cold. I cannot quite locate it. It seems to come from the nearside rear.

Yes it happens at all times on starting, I only mentioned the cold because the vapour beginning to issue at the same time the noise starts is some sort of clue.

Yours is a petrol ?

Cuts out something totally diesel-related then.

Wondering whether - mostly because of the water vapour - if it is something to do with the air-con as someone mentioned the Fabia's aircon is always on (albeit running minimally unless you actually switch it on).

If it switches itself off after a couple of minutes it's the exhaust gas recirculation, like Reffro said.

Think the electronic type noise from the rear is the ABS sorting itself out. - Nothing to worry about.

T'other will be egr or turbo as stated.

it's probably the auxillary air injection pump whining, it only runs for a few miniutes then the engine is cold on start-up, but only the petrol models have them...... if yours is really noisey, i've got a spare one kicking around here:)

I have exactly this too. It starts making the noise a couple of minutes after starting the engine (usually when I'm scraping the windows!). It's not the turbo as the whistle is too high pitched. If you tap the accelerator slightly does it stop? I does on mine. It sounds like something within the exhaust system is resonating slightly.

For anyone not sure what sound we mean! It sounds exactly like a camping kettle when it's just starting to whistle (ie it's quiet!).

I have a strange whistling noise on my mine too! I got in last August, it is a 2005, it has always made this strange whistling noise, its not there all the time but some days it is louder than others. It is most noticable in low gears and when going around corners, it does not seem to be connected to the brakes and seems to be coming from the rear. I took a guy from the dealers out in it to have a listen and he did not know what is was but didn't think it was anything serious, I am still wondering whether to ask if they'l have a look at it, but they will probably say that they cannot find anything wrong:confused:

Yes. And it does sound like a camping kettle - and it does come from the front.

Two people have said it's the EGR - so will have to go with that. I didn't respond to Reffro's "EGR" as I thought it a bit too cryptic - but someone else has given same answer so I presume it is that.

The whistle that happens after a couple of minutes of switching on the engine & then stops is the EGR valve.

I think that's been answered a few times now! :)

I'm not sure, it doesn't sound "normal", my t'other half has an Octavia VRS and I have heard his turbo and its not the same, mines a more like a constant noise from a fanbelt sort of whining, if you know what I mean, but its not the fanbelt, and the guy from the dealer did not know what it was either:confused:

Mine sounds like another noise I had a while back. There was a toolbox in the boot with a small metal detector inside. It accidentally switched on and there was a constant, muted high-pitched whine. The current noise is like this but stays for a while and then goes.

another possible candidate for the noise on the 2.0 petrol is the evaporative emmission control canister

Where is that ?

This comes up every time there's a cold snap, and it would appear they all do it. I think maybe the main reason it's noticed when it's cold is that it's the only time people start their car and leave it idling for any length of time (to defrost) before moving off. Whatever it is, it goes away once the engine's warm so I don't think there's anything to worry about.

Oh, and while my vRS does it, Mrs Ap0gee's 1.4MPi doesn't (don't know about the 2.0 as someone else has mentioned on here...) Seeing how it usually gets noticed by vRS drivers, it's presumably a PD engine thing. Might be interesting to see if PD100 drivers' cars do the same...

Where is that ?

in the right hand rear wheel arch under the arch lining next to the filler pipe
