What is wrong with my Mk1 vRS

Featured Replies

Last month I bought an '03 Mk1 vRS from a Skoda dealer.

On the day that I picked it up I noticed a problem whilst accelerating. The car would die off around 2,500 rpm and then further up the rev rang it would 'surge'.

I think this is different to the splutter problem which a lot of people have reported.

It has been back to the dealer who has changed the MAF, Dump Valve and ECU.

Now they are refusing to do anything else to the car, claiming that there is nothing wrong with it. Even though it is exactly the same as when they first started looking at it.

I drove another vRS of a similar age today and it felt amazing compared to my car.

What do people recommend now?

temperature sender perhaps have you got acsess to vag com

Tell them to change the N75 valve!!

That, if it plays up can cause the power to surge.

I don't have access to VAGCOM.

Isn't the N75 the dump valve? They have put a new dump valve on and it has made no difference.

I have done a bit of research and you might be correct.

Would Skoda fit an N75J valve or do I need to go to an aftermarket retailer?

Skoda will replace the N75 with the correct one for your car. Alternatively you could buy your own J valve if that's what you want.

It could also be down to a split hose on the vacuum.

I'm fairly sure that Skoda have another name for the N75 valve but I'm afraid I don't know it! It's worth finding out before you go though so that they don't look at you with blank faces!

The N75 is the N75, that's what they call it.

There is quite a lot of useful troubleshooting info about the 1.8T engine here, including an explanation of what the N75 electronic solenoid valve does. :)

if its under warranty keep taking it back until they fix it and if they don't complain like mad until it is fixed.

Dirty throttle body maybe? i know it made a lot of difference to mine.

In case the N75 thing doesn't work...

Start recording the dates of your visits to the dealer, what has been said/admitted & what has been done to the car at each visit. Start talking about 'Not of merchantable quality'. Set them a deadline to fix the car. Try to get as much as you can from them in writing. Phone them every day!

Hope it doesn't come to this

Actually the n75 valve is called a dumpvalve by vag so you need to find out if the replaced the pressure valve or the dump valve,as they could of changed either part if they called it a dump valve,it could be either part that is creating the problem as well, find a good after market garage with vag-com or knowledge of these engines and im sure it will get sorted out! Where in the south east if you would like to use us!

If you are claiming to be a VAG specialist then I for sure wouldn't come to you if you think the N75 is the dump vlave mate.

The N75 is the wastegate regulator. An electrical solenoid valve and not a vacuum operated recirculating valve which is what the Diverter valve (dump valve) is.

I've been in there, did'nt fill me with confidence tbh.

If they didn't fill you with confidence did they fill your pockets with money so they have the right to advertise on here.

as said the N75 is the actuator regulator and not a dump valve, its basically an air injector like the instal in cossies for more accurate ECU controlled boost pressures and the dump valves is what recirculates teh boost pressure from the inlet system back before the turbo to prevent turbo stall :)

Just incase anyone followed my initial post I thought I would write an update.

Skoda Customer Services persuaded the garage to take another look at my car. They would provide them with any technical knowledge they needed.

When I took it in I asked them to check the N75 following the advice on here. They replaced it and the car now works fine. So a big pat on the back to everyone who recommended I check the N75!

Anyone have any idea on the cost of the N75?

Glad to hear all is now well OSGrooves :)

Good result fella.

I'm sure that you would now like to return the favour to Briskoda by coughing up £1 a month to join Freedom! ;)

I'm glad you got it sorted anyway, nice one.

Hmm I think i'll try that N75 valve trick on mine too. It can be a little jerky when trying to accelerate smoothly in fx. 2. gear. Happened after a remap.

Is the trick to just replace it with another original one? Part# please? :)
