Engine dies after 5 miles

Featured Replies

I have a 1997 1.6 (VW) Felicia Est. The problem started after driving 200 miles now it is down to 5 miles. The engine cuts out ether at speed or just stopping and will not start until it has cooled down. I was advised to change the coil by the recovery driver this was done but it is still cutting out Help!

Certainly sounds electrical / engine management related and these sorts of problems can be a nightmare to get to the bottom of. Have you taken it to a garage for a fault code check?

Had similar symptoms on my 1.6 Octy, it was down to the crank position sensor. It didn't need to always need to cool down to restart though...not sure if this is indicative of the problem being different from yours though!

Rob.

i would suspect the coil may be overheating

Fuel pump relay or fuel pump.

Quite a few years back I had a Vuaxhall Nova with the same symptoms, turned out that when a local garage has installed a new crankshaft the spark plugs they had put in were short reach rather than long reach and this was retarding the ignition and causing the engine to cut out or refuse to start when hot!!
