Fooling the airbags

Featured Replies

Before anyone gets on their high horse, please reconsider and put the horse back in the stable and kindly go elsewhere. :D

I run without airbags. My choice, end of. I wasn't sure after doing my conversion if hooking up my pd100 ecu would have funny effects with the new wiring, so never connected them. I would like to fool the ECU to at least get rid of the light (my last permanent one). Was wondering if something as simple as a wire between two bits of each plug would do the trick?

Any "help" appreciated. Being a passenger in my car comes with the usual disclaimers.

Your cars main ecu expects to see a proper airbag controller on the end of the wire. Sadly I fear you will either be stuck with the light, or as a bodge you could disasamble the cluster and remove or disconnect the airbag bulb/led.

I could plug in the controller I reckon. I expect that it's likely they'd talk to one another. It's the ends which plug into the two airbags I'm referring to more. :)

you can use a resistor at the ends of the wires which fools the ecu into thinking there is an airbag plugged in....

i cant remember the value of the resistor you need tho, would be easy to work out tho, just measure the resistance of the air bag module and then fit/solder a resistor in

DO NOT MEASURE THE RESISTANCE OF AN AIRBAG!!!!!!!!

A multimeter uses a small current to measure resistance, this can be enough to trigger an airbag if connected accross the two terminals.

Don't feel special Jason. Motorists have run without airbags for decades, back when cars were light, and proper :)

There is a kit available to disarm the passenger airbag which will probably contain the resistor you require if you don't manage to find out before.

Jase, I've been following all of your mods with interest and great respect.

I hate horses especially high ones (having been badly winded after falling off a donkey as a child).

Simple fix - connect up the airbags. It should be dead simple, and should turn off your last CEL light. As a freebie it can protect your face.

You can bang your face up pretty badly

If that happens to you, you'll find it very VERY hard to get laid trust me......

Nah, it will just even his face up a little ;)

Just had a look and it appears you don't need a resistor on the Fabia just a login code for VAS/VAG-COM.

Thanks mate, and don't worry, I wouldn't try to test any airbags with any electrical equipment. :D

Bas - I know where you're coming from being in your line of work, but I don't want the bag to go off when it's not needed due to some mismatch between pd100 hardware and pd130 wiring - I might be totally off-tack with this concern, but to be sure, I've not hooked them up. There's nothing stopping me hooking up the airbag ECU and plugging in the steering wheel in reality apart from this. The passenger airbag weighs too much so it's in a box up the loft. :P

1 question why do you run it without them  is it weight issues :rubchin:

It says above. :) It's the fact my airbags are pd100/2001 TDI and the wiring/ECU etc is now 2004 od130 vRS. :)

i wouldn't expect the airbags to be wired differently jason so the steering wheel should be fine and as stu says get the passenger one sorted. not moaning but i hope you have informed your insurance company about not having the airbags working :)

I wouldnt expect the airbags to be much use if the car is on its roof either :D

Jason.. can you find out what the resistance of the airbag module is for me please?

actually, now you mention it... i have blown one up like that before....

stupid suggestion really.... it was late:O
