Replacement door glass

Featured Replies

Someone had broken into my car and smashed the front passenger door glass. I have a fully comp policy with norwich union, but do they cover replacement glass? I am just waiting for the police to get back to me....

So do I need to source the glass myself? they have slightly bend the door at the bottom where the rubber runs along to smash the glass :-(

If you are fully comp, then glass is covered with a small excess which is usuall 50-60 ish.

yep.. thats what RAC Autowindscreens say too..... so I am waiting for them to get back to with a time that the job can be done.... but they are 24hr, so maybe tonight....!!! (but I am sure that would be too much like good luck!)

What I would say is that the side glass may cost less than claiming off your insurance.

Don't think I would claim myself unless the cost is quite high to replace it yourself. I just get the feeling that any claim at all is one where the insurance companies will notch the price up when you come to renew next time.

Had mine done at Autoglass a few years ago and only cost me

Had this happen twice in 2005 on an ibiza.

First time it happened, replacement glass from dealer was

Did they rip your car kit out? What's that all about?

That's what it looked like to me too.

One reason why I try to route cables through the dash, so it looks a pig to get to the control box. To me looks like the cables were at the side of the console?

Can advise a good cable route on the Mk1, and good place for the control box - which is fiddly to get out, so will deter most theives.

PM me if interested.

It wasn't his car kit they ripped out, but I won't say more than that and will let Matt disclose if he wishes to.

when i had my fronty broken into the RAC replaced the side glass. Had to fit a tempory bit first while a new piece was delivered. They were very good. Cost me

Fair do's.

Kinda curious now tho....

Yep, some ******* decided to steal my snooper unit, which was pretty well hidden under the passenger seat. The only queue it was there were a few cables, but there were also cables to where the ashtray is for my PPC (which I use as a sat nav). In their hurry to steal the snooper unit, they only took the radar side part and the main base unit. They managed to leave behind the GPS unit for the snooper (was tunk in at the bottom of the windscreen, next to the GPS for my sat nav).

In pulling it out, they pulled the cables out for my car kit, and the main nokia control box plus the speaker/radio mute stuff as well. The aerial cable that goes into the inductive bit of the car kit was pulled out, and the plug from my tax disk area holder was pulled off too.

All in all a bit of a mess. The police did come and dust for finger prints and took a few fibres away - so maybe they have an idea who it behind it - otherwise the fibres seems a bit pointless? But there again I am no police officer!

The strange thing is that my PPC was in the glove box (I won't do that again!), but they did not even look anywhere else in the car. So all they took was the snooper and the radar detector (which was broken after I had driven through a flood - I had it mounted in the drivers side air intake in the bumper).

And what did I det out of it? A wet car, smashed glass (being done on Monday morning hopefully - no stock of glass in the bournemouth area apparently!), my snooper stolen and my hand free kit knackered.

As car as I can tell they smashed the window by sticking a screw driver down the rubber seal along the bottom edge and bending it - as I have 3 bends in that piece of metal now :-( I assume that caused the glass to crack, and then they pushed it in? There were a few bits of glass on the drivers seat, and some had made it to the rear passenger foot well (still there - I ain't cleaned it up yet!). After breaking the window, they just lent in though the window hole and stole what they wanted.

The car kit was only pulled out in error! The main control box was well hidden, and the cables just popped out near to the cradle for the phone. I also had my sat nav cables take the same route. TBH: I did not even know you could get to the control box from the side - when I put it in, from infront - through the center console.

usually on a fully comp policy the excess applies to one claim ( or so i am led to believe) without affecting your NCB,and one claim can be one window or the lot,as long as the lot happened at the same time.

Matt Skospares had loads of MK I's so I think you could get a second hand side glass easily.

They are based in Poole, IIRC pretty close to trents up by tower park.

As VWD mentioned one claim = one excess, but the snooper wouldn't' be covered by the glass excess.

Becareful leaving snooper and GPS in the car. Many insurance firms wont cover their cost, nor that of damage getting to them! Theives now use pulse detectors which can find anything that has a battery - laptops, mobiles, GPS, PPC, pagers, even a watch is enough for them to pick up!

  • Author

How does the pulse detector not just give a 'yes' reading or however they work as there is one huge battery under the bonnet?

I am pretty sure I made a claim this time last year (well a few weeks earlier) for a replacement windscreen just before the MOT was due, so that means I should be in a new policy year, and therefore get another window claim....

The GPS unit I heave in the car is just a 1inch x 1inch little box.... :-)

I hope their B**** fester and drop off for doing that to your car. Best of luck getting it sorted.

I quite agree :D

Just sorting out my shocks on the front of the car this morning, and then I might chase a local scrappy or two to see if they have any glass - but at least I have the RAC autowindscreen man as my backup plan should I run out of time!
