Best Launch technique for Fabia vRS?

Featured Replies

Coming up to my final 200km of clutch bedding-in. Seems a mate has a cousin with a G-Tech meter who can lend it to me for a couple of days.

I've always been clutch-friendly AFAP, but would appreciate a few pointers on what is the best way to launch to get the best 0-60 and 1/4 mile times.

I want to review my recent Helix Steel SMF + uprated organic clutch + LSD install and need to have some performance data to make the post more objective, well-rounded and interesting...

Any positive advice would be welcome...

(I remember when I asked a noobie question on tips on how to do a wheelie on a heavy bike on a US forum and I got a response that was like " dunno what planet you guys are from but....." :finger: .... Glad that peeps like that aren't too common on this forum :D ....)

Cheers everyone

A 2nd gear start would probably get you the best times but it's not easy to get right.

Baz

I have a friend with a aftermarket "launch control" system fitted to his MR2 turbo. it is a type of traction control unit that when switched on it holds the revs at a preset level and all you do is drop the clutch and it sorts out the power delivery. he is very pleased with it.

not sure if you can get a similar system for the fabia but it might be worth looking into.

I did an experiment in the slight damp away from a red light. Put it in 2nd, took revs to 3000 and held them there, then lifted the clutch (but didn't drop it up - it was more of a feed) - I got lots of wheelspin, but the car held the revs fine and it didn't bog down. I have a feeling generally, this is the way to start. I reckon it would be the same as using 1st gear, except you're saving that "half second" of changing from 1st to 2nd. :)

Hi Basil, I have a GTech hard wired into the car, which does concern me............

Anyway, second gear launches feel faster, but usually end up slower. I usually launch at 3k in first, short shift to second almost immediately the car has set off, and change to third at the end of my powerband.

Let me know what you get :)

I was getting 6.5 after the hybrid was fitted, but down to 7.5 now the FMIC is on. Needs mapping....... :(

Something like this might help

Seriously though, hope you are liking your newly fitted parts :)

Hi Bas,

Apologies if I have missed it, but have you done a review of the LSD ? I'm really interested in the difference this makes when 'making progress'..

Cheers.

I'll bet that'd launch the vRS PDQ!!!

not yet mate - will have to wait until all is run in fairly soon.....

"dunno what planet you guys are from but....."

lol

sorry ....

I agree, 2nd gear starts seem to be the business, but seriously, no.

I found a touch of wheelspin from about 2500-3000 rpm in first, quickly into second (don't stamp hard on the throttle, frantic wheelspin is NOT fast! ;) ) and change into 3rd gear around 3800 - 4000 rpm. I think being smooth is the key, keeping the front tyres on the edge of breaking traction is undoubtedly the fastest, but its bloody difficult to master.

I think this looks like a good way of starting... :o Oviously the driver is very skillful getting the power down.

I'd be able to have you in the punto Dave with a time like that ;) lol.....

I would suggest moving of in first, but feathering the throttle ("granny start") so it goes quick, with the slightest "chirp" of wheelspin, too little you'll bog down, too much and you'll loose time... then short shift into second and boot it.....

9 seconds to 60 along with 22 seconds to 100. I would say that is spot on!

There is no way on hells earth that is standard.

Why Tom? 9 seconds to 60 and 22 seconds to 100? That's standard figures.

Oh yeah, sorry. I've got a 0-100 vid of mine to 100 when mapped, 20s 0-100. :)

I must admit this is a pretty interesting topic.

I picked up my 07' Plate fabia just over a month ago, and am dead chuffed with the performance. Just yesterday I took it up to Jabbasport for a Custom Remap, its now kicking out 171BHP. Anywho, having upgraded from a Fiat Punto 1.2 8V, I am really having trouble getting good starts with my lovely Furby.

I mean its pointless pulling away in 1st and planting the throttle because the tyres break away instantly, currently I am pulling away fairly smoothly in 1st, then moving it into 2nd and feeding in the power. I find once I have got up some speed I can then start to be more harsh on the power delivery.

Being only 19, and having been driving for only two years I have no experience under my belt with powerful cars like the Furby so I guess its just practice for me...

Powerful? :P

I'm agree with offerman I moved up from a Punto 60s so I think it's quite powerfull, We are not talking supercar powerfull, What supercar can you get for

I've driven a 400bhp Escalade and the Fab feels alot faster

Well of course guys its all relative, I mean to some people 170BHP is shopping trolley power, but when my old Mk 3 Punto was only kicking out 60BHP, and a meagre 110Nm of Torque, the Fabia is out of this world; I love it so, so much.

Im just trying to drive on the side of caution at the moment, I don't really want to let my inexperience get the better of me and plant the thing in a hedge. But that aside, the ol' vRS is really a pheonomical bit of kit.

Glad your enjoying it Offerman. It really is a great car to drive, very comfortable and does everything you need and want. Just for me, I became bored of the power super quick. That might be down to the way it was delivered who knows.

Where abouts are you from? Oh.. and Welcome to Briskoda :D

Hey Snoopie, cheers for the warm invite. :)

I am from Basingstoke, in good old Hampshire.

Its so true about the car, it really is everything you would want in a car. I took a test drive in a few cars before I got it, one being a Fiesta ST, the other was a Polo GTi, and I really cannot explain it but there was just something that compelled me to get the Fabia. Now I know naturally a nipper like myself, you'd expect to get the Fiesta or Polo. I dunno, maybe it was because the vRS was much more understated then the other two, it just sort of lured me in. But what ever it was; it was good.

Anywho, its great to be here. Definitly a warm, friendly bunch of people.

I was 18 when I got my Fabia vRS. And, as you say, you feel different, people expect you to have the normal .. Fiesta or Corsa etc. It's nice to be different, and to show off a nice car for it.
