Anyone interested in a bonnet lift Group Buy for OctyII?

Featured Replies

you'll have a hard time compressing the lifter by hand, the pressure inside is outrageous. If you consider the lifter base is secured quite close in relation to the bonnet hinge it needs to exert a huge amount of force to lift the bonnet from there.

That's what I thought to be honest

I've only got as far as taking mine out of the box, not even thought about fitting yet!

Couple of questions:

- Paul - the primer/paint - is that aerosol spray? (I've never painted anything in my life!)

- I've tried compressing the part by hand but can't. I assume that once it's fitted there is more pressure asserted from the leverage of the bonnet?

- Gillywibble - how easy was it to fit?

Firstly, the gas cylinder will NOT compress under "human" strength. The cylinder is under VERY high pressure, as per instructions do NOT attempt to dismantle/open or pierce in any way. Nor incinerate in fire etc.

Secondly - Yep, Primer and Paint (aerosols)

I think Halfrauds charged me £4.99 for 300ml each (ie a tenner in total - but each can will do at least two mounting rails - so if you have a friend etc etc)

Just take your time, you will need two or three coats of each.

The hole at one end of the mounting rail is handy to hook a straightened out coat hanger on. You can then dangle at arms length (or suspend from garage ceiling etc) while you spray. It will also mean you don't have to lay the mounting rail on a surface while it drys if you hang the coat hanger / rail up between coats.

The primer you should aim for a "dry" 50-75% opacity on each coat. This gives each coat "grippage" (to quote Karl Pilkington ;) ) on at least TWO layers for each new coat. ie second coat will adhere to both first coat and the 25-50% metal you didn't cover on first coat. (obviously this is a 50-75% dither, do not spray just the top half !

Leave at least 15 mins between coats (of same spray) or ideally 24 hours and definitely 24 hours between last primer and first paint.

For the paint you should aim to get a just "wet" look, do not spray "dry" or spray too "wet" that it runs or sags.

The can says spray from 20 cm, but for such a small item 10-15cm gives better control and less spray-cone spread losses.

Spray along the length of the mounting rail, not across it (ie long sweeping action)

Show us ya top coat !

Bugger! Halfrauds only have silver or white for Skodas! looks like I'll be going elseware for paint then. Any recommendations?

Phil

could take it to the stealer... or a bodyshop... not sure how much that'd cost though!

or look under... audi, vw or seat...

The black I used was Halfrauds VW Black Pearl Metallic - with black I can't think you can go too far wrong.

Isn't Skoda Race Blue the same as Mercato blue for VW Boras/Polos?

(THE LEGAL BIT: for goodness sake check this first before you spray up your own car)

Firstly, the gas cylinder will NOT compress under "human" strength.

 What about, er, super-human strength?

Is the Race Blue code 8x8x ? Btw is it available in Halfords ?

Why do you have super-human strength Jonno?

I just meant you wont be able to budge it with your bare hands (or sitting on it for that matter - don't try it I am just guessing!!).

As Dan (dstev2000) said, the pivot point/fulcrum when secured on the bonnet offers huge leverage.

Regarding the 8X8X, I spoke to the garage before seeing your reply yesterday. They seem to go by the number of the paint shown in the boot, 9463. He thought the 8X8X might be the order code that the garage order with....but hey what would I know :)

And there was I chuffed with my compilation of Irish alcoholic beverages!!

By the sound of it you know more about them than I do :P

Can someone tell me what's going on with this group buy thread please?

If no group buy is forth coming I suggest either the title is changed or the thread be closed.

Thanks.

Hi,

The group buy has been accomplished... :)

I'll close it off then.
