getting the "under cover" police car look...

Featured Replies

hi guys, bit of a random thread but i have a black octy vrs mk1 and coming home from touring cars at 6pm yesterday afternoon i noticed that 90% of the cars i caught upto moved out of the way before i had to lift off of brake, most indicating moving over too!!! i had my lights on as it was twilight and its just good practice. i thought i should share this technique as it seems to work very well if your in a rush- "lights on in daylight!"

lights on dipped, close at about a 20-30mph defecit to the car infront, any faster and they dont realise your there till you catch them any slower and they cant see you gaining when they see the headlights.

is there anything else you legally can do to assume an undercover car look? hi vis jackets are my first thought, lol. The benefits are you can really cut through traffic legally and without tailgating if you get it right...issue of speed aside.

Have tried the high-vis jacket approach.

Used to car share with a friend to work (transport company) so we thought we'd wear our yellow high-vis jackets to see if we could cut our 40 minute commute down the M4.

Have to say it didn't work...:(

Though those overtaking us would take a close look.

lol, i bet they did. short of fitting strobe lights...(EXTREMELY ILLEGAL) i cant really think of anything else, shame the hi-vis approach doesnt work.

do you find people tend to give you a wide berth when closing on them?

Driving to a fancy dress party as a copper, that would definalty work.

An extra aerial should help, also the motorway cops never go around by themselves, so get an equally smart passenger too...

How about a couple of extra dummy antenna, ad a n extra stick on rear view mirror - worth a try ?

extra arial! good idea! always fancied having a CB in my car(yes i love smokey and the bandit). do you have to have a huge one or are modern ones smaller? if i get one for my mobile too i could have 3!lol.

Take a pic of a proper one and copy it to a 'T'.

? mount a pair of non-functioning, non-wired Blue lights prominently on the dash and on the rear parcel shelf???

Also have a cheapo CB mike in hand and talk into it while driving...

10-4 good buddy! lol!

whats the legalities of having blue lamps on the front without bulbs or wires in, basically shells? im guessing mr plod would be VERY unhappy with em, wired or not???

Black box on rear parcel shelf, extra aerial, extra rear view mirror.....

anyone got a pic of an undercover car? ive seen plenty of "propper" police vrs' but no unmarked ones???

At night have a camera handy & fire the flash through the windscreen

It reflects and blinds you :grumpy:

So I'm told......... :D

Black box on rear parcel shelf, extra aerial, extra rear view mirror.....

..... as well as maintaining a fixed distance to other traffic and driving in a very "positive" manner, without being aggressive. Often get people moving out of my way driving like this and if you want a bit of fun, match their lane changes keeping the fixed distance, and see if you can get them down to a dead 70mph

Chris

Yep - someone p!sses you off, just lift up the mike with its curly-wurly wire, look at them hard and swear to your heart's content into the mike - very therapeutic I would imagine......lol!

High vis on rear shelf, extra mirror, extra aerial, cut outs of front grill were lights might be ;), motorway cone on back seat:rofl:, wearing a pale blue shirt and navy jumper :D

...so im guessing im not the only one enjoying the benefits of the octys use in the force?! lol.

our lass couldnt believe it, we were not hooning down the road althogh were slightly over the limit and absoluetly everything was moving over, never had this before! m3's, 5series, vans, hatchbacks, the lot! :)

You could spray the inside of some old foglamp shells black and just fix them with velcro - say your kids put them there....Unlit they could be 'mistaken' for blue....

Alternatively you could just do it totally legally and drive an unmarked/marked car for a living and when someone ****es you off do them for real:rofl:

As for having blue lights, working or not, you are giving the impression of being an emergency vehicle and therefore could be charged with impersonation, if you are taking advantage of that impression:eek::thumbdwn:

Just love those blues and twos!:D

Regards,

Steve

ahh, borderspeed, you sound like just the man! so im guessing that basically any form of blue lights on the front, functional or not will get us in lots of trouble?

i was unsure asto the limit of how far you can push this angle. i mean hi-vis building site jackets, ariels and extra "black boxes" can be justified innocently enough if you get pulled even though both of you know its naughty. What would you reccomend for the imitation look without crossing the line?

So I assume my grille mounted strobes would be counted as "dubious" in the eyes of the law?

:D

Just wear your civvies and be a 'plain clothes copper'.

Its the magnetic disco light you keep lobbhing onto the roof thats the real problem Jon:rofl:
