Brakes: What do I do?

Featured Replies

First of all, remember I have a spare set of brand new (ok, 3 weeks old) standard discs AND pads lying around... (now, where did they come from? :D)

But I'd like some uprated brakes in some form or the other, so could do with some handy pointers. The choices are in the poll and I'm a little unsure what to do to be honest. :(

Thanks for any assurances!

top option.. JFDI.

:)

you wont regret it.

Option 2.

IMHO, for the driving you are going to do, finances, etc etc, option 2 with some decent fluid would be adequate.

 My heart says this, but my wallet is shaking its head. :( Lets see what happens later on when I speak to Jabba about suspension. ;)

Pads on OEM discs AND FLUID!

If the pads eat the discs, so what you have spares ;)

Then as time and funds allow you can do disks...

DS2500 and decent fluid will do :)

im considering that myself ;)

So, who voted for the wrong one? Colin or Colin? :D

I voted for Diamond myself as it was a gut choice, and I suspect Paul did too. ;) "JFDI!"

edit: when people mention uprated brake fluid I'm gonna need all the help in the world with respect to what/where/how much...

Oh yeah? accidentally, eh? :D

I got the fluid thing sorted as Chris @ DT is proving to be damn good at the customer service bit.

Care to explain more, Jon? :D

Look at Stimps's post here - apparently they don't always have labels on or perhaps some people pull the labels off without reading them Anyway the idea is that the forward rotation of the wheel flings the water off by centrifugal force along the grooves. If the disc is facing the wrong way the grooves pull the water inwards instead of flinging it outwards ...

Fitting discs is really only a matter of undoing a couple more bolts to free the caliper, sliding it to one side, undoing one screw, and tapping with a soft-faced hammer - not hard, honest.

Unless of course you are running AP discs in which case the grooves go the other way round as the vanes between the 2 disk faces are actually shaped to carry air to the centre of the disk for cooling.

Why don't the grooves and the vanes go in opposite directions then? Surely the logical solution?

I shan't think I'll worry about fitting them backwards, as the need for rapid brake cooling will be not required, perhaps Brunters day aside... :D

Standard disks and uprated pads and fluid will do you fine Jason, brunters included.

Yeah - I just ordered (another) set from JHM Buttco in a desperate effort to bump the value of the order over their "cheaper postage" rate...

I might go and see if Dad's new Golf has locking wheel nuts and sell them to him at a profit... :D

Stimps... where are you getting the brakes fitted?

how much is it costing?
