What is the dumbest thing that you have ever done to a car?

Featured Replies

A girl I knew was a student nurse and so living in the usual student poverty (but with a car). She was on a mission to make the fuel in the tank last as long as possible and once, when working her way down the ramps from the top of a multi-storey car park, decided that a good way of saving some fuel would be to turn the engine off as she was at the top of the ramp. Everything was going fine until she reached the bottom and the steering lock kicked in! I believe the concrete wall that stopped her wrote the car off

The only thing I can think of that I used to do regularly with an old car was drive out of the petrol station with my fuel cap still on the roof.:o

Probably gonna make myself look an idiot here... My old Ford Onion used to only run on three cylinders now and then when it was damp... WD40 used to solve this!

Was driving it one day and the problem never cleared so pulled in at the side of the road, sprayed a liberal amount of WD40 under the bonnet and it subsequently ignited... I did manage to blow it back out tho!

Now there's a mental picture! :D

regularly electrocute myself

So many, so many...

Drove 5 miles in my brand new Corsa last October and was greeted by a knocking noise. Called the RAC for them to tell me all 5 wheel bolts were just sitting in the holes, not done up at all. Oops.

I topped the oil on my Fiesta up with a whole litre of washer fluid - just wasn't thinking!

I broke the airbox on my vRS changing the filter, at

assumption is the mother of all **** ups!!

i have done so many stupid things that to me they no longer seem stupid but merely normal :o

refitted my wheel forgetting to fit the caliper.

fitted new calipers upside down and spent hours trying to bleed them with no luck :o

went a bit too slow over a jump on my bike and hitting the back of the landing which was basically a solid clay wall. didn't really damage myself but i bent my forks, frame and wheel i think.

removed the lid of the coolant bottle whilst the engine was hot and burnt my arm and face.

lots and lots of actual electric shocks at work, if i don't have a tester handy i simply dab the cables with my fingers  i still do that now :o

probably hundreds more but i can't remember them :o

pulled the front bumper off g's capri whilst towing it home...got stuck in the mud up shotover at about midnight...tried racing an astra vxr:rofl:

Reversing into a parked car in my brand new Honda!!!

Actually, that reminds me - first day I had my Megane, wasn't used to Reverse being past 1st, and tried to back out of work's car park only to fly forward into the Armco in front of me... :(

Well' date=' I had this great idea of fitting a PD engine into a Fabia, spending too much money on it, fitting NOS, fitting a bigger turbo, taking off the NOS, spending more money, using a few cable ties here and there. Not my finest hour, I must admit.

That was rolling my first fabia

:iagree: That was all pretty dumb, Jason

;)

Rolled my ZX probably.

The bumper wasn't my fault, that was G panicking and sticking his brakes on but the other two i can't really argue. normally i would have taken the VXR like a king but sadly that time the gearbox simply wasn't up to the job :o

i once reveresed my old renault clio full pelt into a advertising board (i honestly didn't see it)

I BOUGHT a set of bullbars for a MK1 Panda 4x4 1.0 (50bhp) I owned  I reckon that's pretty optimistic to say the least!

There is a saying in the British services about making assumptions but I can't think for the life of me what it is now.

Assumption is the mother of all f*ck ups, I believe...

Thought that was 'procrastination'?

but it was the way the tried to pull away, felt the resistance of g having the brakes on (without realising what it was), and just gave it a little gas...

I was gonna reply - I'll do it later.

the thing is i did only give it a little gas, ripped his bumper clean off and bent it in half, poor old capri :D

Oops - At work so didn't read the middle page  That'll teach me!

I keep forgetting to put the cap back on the brake fluid resevoir after changing pads or discs. Cue no brakes.

Why would that give you no brakes?

When you pump the pedal, does it not build the pressure up? But it can't if the cap hasn't been replaced? I am probably wrong, in which case, no-one had better buy a car where I've changed the brakes!

Bought it for my daughter.

When I had been putting back together the carb on my old Astra when I was 18, I went to check the engine would start, which it did . . . . but I had forgotten to remove the spanner box from it's sitting place on the engine block. Oops. :D

Luckily nothing got caught up anywhere - could easily have done damage!
