Fuel Consumption

Featured Replies

I am wondring if the vRS will improve in fuel efficiency as the miles go on? My wifes 1.6LX had 14K on the clock when we bought it and at first we got about 290 per 45L of unleaded, now with 26K on the clock we are getting 345-50 miles per 45L. Any one found the 1.8T improving in this way with use?

All engines loosen up in the first few thousand miles - for some that process can go on into tens of thousands. Then they get old and rattly and economy goes down again.

We haven't had either of our Octy VRS long enough to notice them getting more efficient (first one was nicked at 4K, current one is up to 3.5K), but I have noticed my Fabia has improved in recent weeks and that has 10K on it.

My Octy 1.6 will do about 500 to a tank on the M-way at a gentle cruising speed, and about 350 to 400 around town it has done about 80k though so nicely loosened up :D

No, unless you are driving very steady. Mine has stayed around the 300 mark. Iv'e covered 30k miles now.

I use to get 425 miles out of a tank before the RS was Jabba-ed. ;)

I think economy is dependent on how you drive....not just how much you use the right foot but also the way the ECU adapts to the way you drive.

Not rightly sure if this is correct but.......if you drive with economy mind the ECU will "remember" this. So, if you then decide to drive fast the ECU will still have certain "slow" driving characteristics until it adapts. Performance is hence initially "slow".

The reverse can then be said...you drive "fast" ECU adapts to this...you then want economy but it is poor due to the ECU being still in "fast" mode until it adapts.

Like I said....not sure if this is correct. :ne_nau:

So what do you get now, Adrian?

I'd better start hoofing it then for the next couple of weeks to get my ECU ready for Brunters. ;)

Depends on my mood. ;)

Best has been 380 miles....worst 280 miles.

On average around 325 miles.

I suspect that once the novelty of a new car has worn off , many people become a bit more gentle with the right foot and that shows improvements as much as the engine loosening up.

Ouch! I've been bemoaning my lack of economy recently but usually hope to get 410 ish

i get about 360 (including whats left on the trip) and mines standard.

suppose i ought to loosen off the right foot huh ??

i'm blaming the renault, you had to scream that to get the best results ;)

My journey really only has one long straight bit...A33...rest in B roads so it's not too bad considering.

On motorway I can get 40mpg at around 70-75 mph...but I really do find it boring now since Jabba-isation. More like 35-38mpg with varing speeds.;)

Sheesh - there must be something wrong with my car.

I know I drive it 'briskly' but driving 70-80 motorways all the way the best i've ever managed is 305 out of a tank (running down to 0 on the miles left thing!)

Worst is 180 miles, best 305, average 245 miles per tank.

Mostly drive round town (i think they call it the 'urban cycle') and get 280ish

Decat....decat...... :D

Must be also said you daily journey is only 2 miles...not enough time for the car to get warmed up and into it's stride.

I usually get around 280 miles out of a tank in mine, but that's lots of high speed driving on twisty roads - I was averaging 325 miles per tank for a while when I was mostly on M-ways, and did get 360 once ! :)

Best: 380 miles - when I first got it and did a run to Scotland (ave 50mph around A roads)

Worst: 245 miles - road rage around M60, crap fuel

Norm: 300 miles usual 15mile commute on the M60

I guess it must be how you drive

Adrian, I'll have to follow you more often to see what I'm doing wrong- The best I have ever done is 380, and on the same roads as you. Maybe it's because I come home on the M4...

Your cruising speed on the Mway can make a BIG difference to economy. Mine is rarely above 85 (reads 70 on the speedo of course)

First run on the RS was brimmed in Newquay....this strange beep sound pierced the cabin as we hit Manchester; still not sure how I got from Brum to Manc...ho hum the joys of 8+hours driving.

Was might impressed it made it that far on one tank, 4x4 was not quite as nice, but larger tank so evened out; just.

Plus I have a daft wing that half of the pigeon population could nest under; might not help to much...225 tyres aswell great for left and right, not so for forward...how much are these PD130's anyway?

Seems to vary with fuel type too.

I can do 400+ on a tank of Optimax / SUL. Assuming its mostly motorway cruising. I don't hang around either. Last week's Jabba run saw an average motorway speed of cough 70 mph cough ;)

Bog-standard 95 RON usually sees 360-380.

agree with geoff's figures, comparable to mine.
