Admiral and Remaps

Featured Replies

I guess this goes along the lines of the 'too many claims' thread, but...

Just wondering whether anybody on here has insurance with Admiral and has a remap? Just enquired about my premium before I have it done and have been told they won't insure the car! They won't even give me some of my money if I leave them early, plus they want to charge me an additional £45 for leaving!!. Looks like I will be waiting until next year for my remap :(

They insured me on the Mondeo last year with a remap/tuning box declared so I guess it may be a change in policy across all cars or they will just no longer cover a remapped Fabia.

Chris

Thats not good news. I'm with Admiral and was thinking of a remap. Oh well just have to wait another couple of months :)

Actually how old are you JMC? Maybe they have a minimum age policy for modified cars

I'm 25 and so is the GF. Did wonder whether it's because I have 0 no claims? I have been driving since 18, without any accidents/claims, however I have previously always been on other people's policies.

They didn't seem to have a clue at first as to what a remap was, I told them it helps smooth power band :D

You should have just said it was to help improve fuel economy. They might have reduced your premium! :)

Uh-oh, thats older than me :( maybe it is due to you having no no claims - hope so ;):D

Ive just phoned them and insured it no problem

£95 on top of normal quote though

32, 9years ncb, crap postcode, clean licence, with wife 27,1 year ncd on policy(always cheaper with a wife on, my wife as only 1 years ncb and its cheaper for me and her than it is just for me:thumbdwn:

I thought they (and Elephant) were ok up to a 25% power increase. That's certainly what they told me.

Was that with a Fabia? Did you have to explain what a remap is?

I have just spoken to them again, the person on the phone said that they don't allow any remaps (engine modifications) and never have - to which I told her she was lying - am waiting on the manager to call me back to give me a reason as to why I'm not allowed. You wouldn't have thought it was difficult to just say you can't have it due to 'your age' or 'due to your NCB'. Why are everyone I deal with idiots?!

The admiral online quotation system alows you to add remaps with various percentage increases when you say that the car is non-standard, so to say they have never done remaps is indeed a lie.

You are right, just done myself a new quote online with modifications and was fine.

Spoken to them again, they are going to refer it to the underwriting department after a lengthy conversation about who was doing the remap (Angel Tuning) and what was the brand name of their software?! When asked about why I wanted it done, I went into length about the sttttutter :) Will get an update tommorrow apparently!

i rang them for a quote and then when the gave me a price i asked them what it would cost extra to have rear anti roll bar and front strut brace for my vrs. They put me on hold for a bit and then said they wouldnt insure me if i had those modifications. Didnt bother asking about a remap as well.

I'm with admiral and just had my octi remapped.. £140 extra for the remainder of the policy (8months remaining :0 ). I'm 29 with 9years full NCD and live in a nice area.

It's kinda wiered. they only charge me an extra £40 when I remapped my old octi vrs and that was over 2 years ago and living in a rough area.

I had a remapped Octavia Elegance insured with Admiral for about £140 extra as well. Other mods (suspension, exhaust etc.) seem to cost £60 each per year - I was 25 at the time.

It may help you if you're not very good at maths and you mis-calculate the percentage increase in power. Tell them its been "chipped" not remapped too........ apparently ;)

But now you've asked they will have put a note on your file so you're stuffed either way.

Yeah, think I may get rid anyway - they have proved themselves to be complete idiots - I would have thought that being a car insurer they would understand terms like remapping.

Just done an online quote

£115 more if i had non standard alloys, lowered and chipped upto 25% increase.

So they will do it and not at the largest of costs. I am only 23 but have 5 yrs NCB.

I did an online quote which was about £100 more with the 'engine chip'. I told them about it and it still didn't seem to get through! Since they got the word 'Remap' in their heads, they don't seem to understand it is basically what they class as an 'engine chip'!

Well, when I first asked them about a remap the girl told me it wasn't a modification as it was different to a chip and didnt add any components to the car - I asked for written confirmation and never got anything

I called Direct Line before I had my car remapped and went through a shopping list of future upgrades i.e. Remap; big brakes; ARB; lowering etc.

They refered to their underwriters and told me they would cover ALL the modifications because I have never had a conviction on my license :)

But they wouldn't touch me if I had!

Im with Admiral and its seems that if you add any mods to your policy halfway through a year the price goes through the roof! I might add everything on renewal as Im guessing this will be loads cheaper.

I added mods with Admiral at various points. No matter where I was in the year it seemed to be £60 extra

Im with the AA, and they wont allow me to have alloys or anything like that  :(

They did say "Security" tints was no change, so I got them done & added them to the policy and now they are saying that never happened

So I think Ill be looking for a new insurer soon:D

Got a response! £114 for the remainder of the policy - I've got 4 months left. That's £342 annually! Think I will wait until the end of the year and get it done with a new insurer. They said a remap could be classed as an 'engine chip' - wish I said that to start with!

Thanks for all the info guys - always amazed at the amount of response posts get on here.

  • 2 weeks later...

Just a quick one, as with a remap no new components are added to the car (It is after all just a change to the code in the ECU) how would the insurance ever be able to tell whether you had remapped your car or not?
