engine management flashing glow plug signal

Featured Replies

I recently had a problem where my dash was flashing the glow plug engine management warning. This happened whilst driving, and came on suddenly. When I got home, I phoned my local dealer and booked in for the diagnostic test, to find the fault.

They carried out the test at SMC Skoda in exeter, and took 40 mins. to find the fault, diagnosed as a faulty brake switch, which they fixed while I waited.

Total time 1 and a half hours, but only 50 mins. to fix the fault.

The switch was around £6.48p, and the bill, just under £69.00p.

Now I know that the dealers have to make money, but I was abit miffed at being charged this amount for a relatively small job, I expect my local garage would have done it for £30 tops. Due to the nature of the glow plug warning, and your hand plug advising going to your nearest dealer, I wonder if this is the way to promote Skoda's back up customer service. I will say that the dealer staff were all very curteous and friendly, but I felt that I was given very little option but to use an expensive main dealer.

I was also told that if a bulb had gone it might give the same warning!

Has anyone else had this happen, I am chuffed to bits with my Octavia sdi and see 50+ mpg with out trying, and this would honestly be the only thing that would put me off another Skoda.

That’s about right I would say. We would charge £25 for the scan and half an hour plus the switch so about £57 and I'm an independent. You should see Audi and BMW prices for simple jobs.

Very, very common fault.

I would say for a 50 minute job it's about right.

Unfortunately unless you have the kit required to diagnose faults you are left with little choice. With my last car (Peugeot 306 D Turbo) the airbag warning light came on, the fault was only a wiring problem but the dealer explained he had to charge me the diagnostic labour rate of £70ph. So for a simple bit of re-wiring it cost me the liberty of £70 + VAT

Well known fault that is diagnosed by seeing if the brake lights are working. Other tests to determine, does the power cut off when brake is lightly applied, does cruise control stop functioning.

My Bora had the faulty brake light switch - cost £25 to get it sorted by VW Liverpool! But my brother did work there at the time! It is a common fault with VW's.

this happened to me but it managed to sort its self out
