Newbie with a colour question..

Featured Replies

Hiya all, just found this site.

Currently have a Silver Fabia 1.4MPi (8v), and looking at the vRS Fabia.

My question is, I quite like the red vRS, but my last red car was a Corsa 1.7D, and the paint oxidised terribly (perhaps I didnt polish it as much as I could have), but Im led to believe this is a common Vauxhall trait (at least for cars of that age (P reg).

Does anyone know if this is likely to happen with Skoda's ? I might play safe and look at the silver one...

The only other question is whether to wait for the rumoured facelift towards end of 2004/2005.

Cheers.

Ryan.

Firstly, Welcome to Briskoda

Secondly the Red Fabia vRS looks great and as far as I know, no-body on here with a red Skoda has had any problems with oxidisation of paint. As you say, this does seem to be a common problem with vauxhalls. If they are kept polished and waxed regularly, then you shouldn't have a problem with it.

With your other query, I'm afraid I have no idea about the rumoured facelift.

Hope this helps.

Don't fool yourself into beliveing this is confined to 1 make of car. They all use similar paints so it can happen to any car, from a Ford to a Ferrari. I've seen a red Octavia Taxi with the same problem.

The key is looking after it, plenty of decent wax and the occasional polish. Use proper car shampoo too, not fairy liquid etc, its full of salt and will turn red paint "white" very nicely ;)

My car is a Corrida Red Octavia Combi i bought it second hand and it has done 80K miles in 4 years, the colour still looks fantastic as members on here that have seen it will testify.

As Geoff says keep it clean and polished and it will stay looking good.

Doesn't red paint fade to a pinky colour over time ? I was told that buy a number of people ?

Only if you don't look after it properly ;)

Wax Wizard would be the man to answer your question and did in fact post on this topic a while back. IIRC red paint is the most susceptible to fading, but can be brought back to life by "feeding" with the right oil / wax. If it's properly protected in the first place the effect will be staved off, as Geoff said.

I was lead to believe that it's something to do with the red pigmentation in the paint that with UV rays makes it fade. Suppose I good wax with UV protection woud help.

My Brother-In-Law has a Red Rover 218 SD (yuck!!)

Apart from assorted stone-chips, and that fact its a :dung:box anyway, it still looks red, as opposed to pink.

Cos i wax it now and then when my sister pops around, her useless hubby hasn't got a clue

Or maybe he has...which is why you end up doing it instead of him... ;)

Last car my Mum had was a Rover Metro in metallic Red. It's now over 10 years old and I saw it the other day in a car park and is still red and shiny. If you take car of the paint and give it a regular wax you will have no problems. Paint techonology has probably moved on since 10 years ago so it's probably far better now too.

Reason why this is still good's probably because it's metallic. The metallic lacquer over the red paint will keep the actual paint protected.

My bird's last car (a solid red Fiat Cinquecento Sporting with SS exhaust, K&N & Ecotek - codename: Pat) suffered quite badly from "blooming" on the bonnet. Tcutting didn't really help a great deal (although a decent Tcut and not CarPlan's might be better), but giving it a decent Turtle Wax brought the deep red back again...until the wax wore off.

If you keep it waxed, avoid parking under trees, wipe bird carp off ASAP, then you shouldn't have a problem.

Go yellow. Be a Hairdresser! :gay:

My last car was black, my new Fabia vRS is red - such an improvement, it doesn't look dirty all the time! TBH the main reason I didn't go for black or silver is 'cos I'm a tight git and wouldn't dream of spending ~

BLACK BLACK BLACK BLACK BLACK BLACK BLACK BLACK BLACK BLACK BLACK BLACK BLACK BLACK BLACK BLACK BLACK BLACK BLACK BLACK BLACK BLACK BLACK BLACK BLACK BLACK BLACK BLACK BLACK BLACK BLACK BLACK BLACK BLACK BLACK BLACK BLACK BLACK BLACK BLACK BLACK BLACK BLACK BLACK BLACK BLACK BLACK BLACK BLACK BLACK BLACK BLACK BLACK BLACK BLACK BLACK BLACK BLACK BLACK BLACK BLACK BLACK BLACK BLACK BLACK BLACK

It's the future! Never mind looking dirty all the time - it just means you can wash it more frequently! PLUS it'll look cool with dark alloys! :D

Silver with dark alloys :D

I'm not sure your taxi-driver black steel wheels are technically alloys... :P

Rob.

I had no problem with my last car a red Seat Ibiza which paint wise was as good as new when i traded it in for my black vRS. Vauxhalls have always had a reputation for paint fade base colours being particularly bad especially red and navy blue
