Mpg At 80-85

Featured Replies

I went to newcastle last week and I got 41-42.5mpg and that was sitting at 80mph which I thought was great for the Vrs:)

Well I tried this out last night in my completely standard vRS. Just taking rough figures to even out and gradient differences I was consistantly getting low 40's @ 70, high 30's to low 40's at 75 and high 30's @ 80 all on the speedo. I think 80 on the speedo is 74/75 on the sat nav IIRC.

When my vrs was standard it was about these figures but since i had it mapped it has improved and it would seem plenty of others getting roughly the same as me as per posts;)

Its an interesting point, I might try running some figures to work out approximately how many miles you have to do to cover the insurance hike and how long it would take for the remap to pay for itself. That way I might be able to convince my financial advisor aka SWMBO that its worth doing :o :P

Don't forget that when you floor it remapped cars usually use more fuel.I wouldn't mention that bit to SWMBO.;)

I'll try and spare her some of the finer details such as the one you've mentioned and that as the car will be modified anyway from having the remap it will probably open the flood gates to all sorts of goodies. Starting with a rear ARB and a cat back exhaust :D

Oh yes i have had it down to 13 mpg  but is good fun though :D .

The best I have managed is 46mpg at 60mph over 60 miles of relatively flat motorway driving in 5th gear.

The experience I have had with my car (which is unmodified) suggests that the faster I go the worse the fuel consumption becomes.

Now I would be interested in hearing the physics on how a car can be more fuel efficient at 80-85 mph than it is at 70mph? (remember wind resistance increases logrithmically with speed) I presume that you are saying that the engine is more efficient at that particular engine speed (revs) but seeing the mk1 vRS hits its torque peak at 1950 rpm and given the figures I have got at 60 mph I think your claim would be hard to justify?

It is odd and the only explanation I can think of is that I have a suspicion the car has been remapped by the original owner.

Can see that when I finally get me a vRS my usual 600Miles/50Litres is going to be out the window! (Old Diesel Golf Remapped).

I struggle to achieve 40mpg, that would be when I drive m-way at 80 mph.

I am not sure I understand how you achieve higher MPG by going faster. having said that, at 40 mph I get better mpg in 4th than doing 30mph in 3rd.

Could it be there is something like optimal revs, where you get the most out of each explosion?? Go figure

Slightly OT...

I was getting a touch over 54mpg average when doing an average 200kph for a couple of hundred km last week.

I was stunned with this and that is from a 2.0 TDI, so I would guess the 1.9 should probably do well at 80-85 too.

Should mention that the 54 was what the trip computer said, but I will work out the trip average at some point.

Im normally getting about 10 when im doin 40mph what you think?

I did a 260 mile round trip on Sunday and managed an average of 38.5 in my standard vRS, mostly sat at 70-80mph, couple of brief burst beyond the limimt to overtake! I was very impressed.

Can I expect to return better MPG after a re-map for a similar sort of journey then?

Dan my mpg got better after my map and so has a lot of others vrs's it must be coz you do not need to change down or floor it so much :D but be warned start getting a bit heavy on the pedal m8 and you will see a drop to around 13 - 15 mpg  but its good fun though:thumbup:

Has any one compared their speedo with a satnav?

I was quite surprised.

The speedo was at 80 and I was only doing 72 according to the satnav!

Does this mean I can drive through speed camaras a bit faster?

Unfortunatly not; up to 40MPH the speedo seems tobe spot on!

Speedo shows your speed at around 5-10% faster than you actually are going but never slower than you are actually going.

52mpg? blimey.

Are you sure someone hasnt snuck a diseasal engine in there?

Mine did 61.8mpg last night on the way home (110 TDi)
