Mpg At 80-85

Featured Replies

Interested to know what others are getting, i am running vpower as always along with CAI - OO7P - Remap and i am getting 41 mpg at 80-85 :D i think this is superb when you consider the performance of the vrs. a lot less when you boot it though have seen it down to 13  this was on the autobahn ofcoarse.

On the motorway with the cruise set on 85 mph my mpg fluctuates between 60 and 25 mpg depending on the gradient. I tend to average about 40ish.

Sound's about right for mine aswell

yup thats about right.

I got 38 on a run to Great Yarmouth the other day but thats with over taking involved

I average about 29 :( I managed 45mpg over a 50 mile run at aroung 55-60mph last week. I doubt I would get 41 at 85mph :(

I've heard many times that Octavia vRS owners find their cars more economical at 80/85mph than 70mph. :)

I wouldn't know, I've never exceeded the 70mph limit :orb_angel

Actually, I think thats true. Looking through the handbook for my vRS there is a graph of fuel consumption Vs speed for each gear. At 70 the curve is slightly higher than at 80, I think the lowest point is 85 - 90 mph.

Does that mean I'd be better off cruising at 70 in 4th? :P

I get about 5-10mpg more, average when cruising at 80-85 than i do at 70-75!

i get between 35-45 at 80-85mph. and at 50ish (my drive to work) i get about 35 avg with some overtaking.

Don't know about MPG, but I got for the first time ever........400 miles out of my tank on the motorway averaging 90mph!! I was only doin 2400rpm in 6th however:D

Your car sounds like a monster! How well does it pull with the derv ratios?

I remember Des saying how economical his car was at higher speeds with the 6 speed box... Excellent stuff!

Considering the extra length of the gears it pulls incredibly well, 6th is not much use below 80, but it pulls strong from 100 to 0 on the speedometer!:D

To 0 I like the sound of that

The best I have managed is 46mpg at 60mph over 60 miles of relatively flat motorway driving in 5th gear.

The experience I have had with my car (which is unmodified) suggests that the faster I go the worse the fuel consumption becomes.

Now I would be interested in hearing the physics on how a car can be more fuel efficient at 80-85 mph than it is at 70mph? (remember wind resistance increases logrithmically with speed) I presume that you are saying that the engine is more efficient at that particular engine speed (revs) but seeing the mk1 vRS hits its torque peak at 1950 rpm and given the figures I have got at 60 mph I think your claim would be hard to justify?

:iagree: 60 mph gives best mpg for me

Remapped cars maybe different?

Has any one compared their speedo with a satnav?

I was quite surprised.

The speedo was at 80 and I was only doing 72 according to the satnav!

Does this mean I can drive through speed camaras a bit faster?

Unfortunatly not; up to 40MPH the speedo seems tobe spot on!

I once had the misfortune of following the misses’ parents. We travelled 70miles cross-country, doing a max speed of 50.

Apart from being bored out of my skull I managed 52mpg, I must admit I have never achieved this since.

52mpg? blimey.

Are you sure someone hasnt snuck a diseasal engine in there?

Well that’s what the puter in the car said.

Like I said that was driving at 50 in 5th. And was only a 1 off.

Over the last 2800 miles the car have averaged 33mpg.

Well I tried this out last night in my completely standard vRS. Just taking rough figures to even out and gradient differences I was consistantly getting low 40's @ 70, high 30's to low 40's at 75 and high 30's @ 80 all on the speedo. I think 80 on the speedo is 74/75 on the sat nav IIRC.

i can get around 40mpg on motorways sat at around 70-80mph.

Slackbladder, the speedo shows your speed at around 5% above whatever yuoa re doing but NEVER under what you do.

I have just spent the last 3 days driving up the motorway to Dundee.

Used a full tank in 3 days, averaged 38-39mpg sitting with cruise on around 80mph

Got circa 390 miles from a tankful
