Tesco Superunleaded problems??

Featured Replies

Last weekend I tried 2 Tesco sites for super unleaded only to find that it was unavailable, so filled up with Texaco Super unleaded. What I have noticed is an improvement in MPG, whereas with Tesco I got 30-31 on the commute, with Texaco this has jumped to 33-34 on the same journey:confused: its a Mkii Octy vRS .

Is the Texaco 99 RON like the Tesco's ?

Tesco superunleaded is pants.

Using BP Ultimate, get much better MPG. V-Power's not quite as good IME, but every engine likes different fuel ;)

Always use Tesco Super Unleaded and have no complaints. Most of my journeys are short and in town so MPG is always going to be cr*p.

Indeed. Got lower fuel consumption with BP Ultimate when I tried it for a long run and made the engine sound a bit rougher. As for the price of it round here too, well, the almost 10p over Tesco made it very poor value for money.

BP is expensive though full stop.

The reason why supermarket fuel is so cheap is because they buy the older fuel off the main fuel providers ie/ Shell, texaco gulf etc... Which isnt best quality, as fuel has a shelf life, hence why performance figures will be down if you use Tesco's etc.. If anything Shells normal fuel will probably be better than tesco's super, although the ron figures will be better in the super, the grade/quality will always be better from the shell fuel. Hope this explains your question

I don't understand. So do they have older fuel seperate or something? I was always under the impression that fuel pretty much was the same in each cateogory but different companies use different additives.

Not that I do it, but people buy petrol to keep in their little green tanks and keep in the garage in case of an emergancy, so is it really going to go off? If this is the case, shouldn't their be a sell by date and use by date somewhere?

Might sound dumb questions, but i'm surprised as I can't seem to find any info on this.

Oh and supermarket fuel, in general, is not much cheaper than anywhere else, if at all. BP are generally more expensive than anyone else, but everywhere else tends to be the same for the 'normal' grades.

Sorry Sy, but your totally wrong with the old petrol statement, and having been an HGV tanker driver with a full ADR certificate who used to deliver petrol, I can assure you that Tesco 99 is the same fresh fuel that everyone else gets, this is borne out by the fact that when filling the tanker at the refinery or distribution points such as Langley or the now demolished Buncefield, you would see most of the major players all collecting from the same point, be it in a tanker wearing the supermaket livery or the main supplier.

If we go along along with your theory then Tesco would only be collecting from the bottom of the tanks when it got to a certain age.

Petrol wholesalers cannot afford to have full tanks of petrol sitting there doing nothing but getting old, and I can assure you this is not the case.

Explain the performance difference then? why is supermarket fuel different from the rivals

If they all collect from the same distribution point then why do they have different RON and MON figures? hmmmm

Tesco 99 is far better in my car than BP ultimate (as I explained above). And I have read here before that BP ultimate isn't that great.

If they all collect from the same distribution point then why do they have different RON and MON figures? hmmmm

Surely there has to be different tanks for different RONS? No? You are not going to get Ron 99 from the same tank that holds 97 or 95 are you? Or am I missing something?

Explain with evidence your unfounded accusation against the supermaket fuels such as Tesco??????

I have run Tesco 99 in my octy vRS ever since the 99ron came on the market and I have never had a drop in power due to it, but if "ER" indoors ever fills up with other fuels by mistake, then I do notice a drop in performance with the other brand.

The only way to check is via a laboratory under controlled conditions, as just going by the onboard computer on the car is totally inaccurate, and to use the fill up each time and note the mileage, is, again only a rough guide as you cannot fill up a vehicle to the same exact amount each and every time, as the garage floor only has to be slightly off straight and it will effect the level of the tank at the next fill up.

All petrol is subject to strict standards regarding the ron etc, and apart from when Tesco had a mishap last year it is adherred to.

As for all petrol coming out the same tank, well, as others have asked how do you seperate the 95 from the 99 at the garage if it was all in the same tank. That is why we have multi-potters for the different grades of petrol when delivering.

Personally I dont use supermarket fuel as I have a diesel vrs. I use either shell extra or v-power diesel, This doesnt cause excessive smoking and improves performance slightly. I have mates who used Tesco fuel a while ago and they noticed there cars running low on power and not pulling well. Just a question to throw into the bag, do you ever see Subaru or mitsubishi cars filling up at Tesco?I know I dont round my end

I only use supermarket fuel in my Diesel. The current tank full is Sainsburys City Diesel, and in my 2.0TD I get just under 600 miles per tank.

My old vRS was mapped for Sainsburys 95ron, and on the rollers was running 225BHP with just a sports exhaust.

I don't know much about diesel, so can't comment really, except you know when you are behind a diesel powered car, but I am sure many Subaru and Mitsibushi owners fill up at Tescos and other supermarkets just like the many Mercs, BMWs, Skoda, Renault, Pugs, Ford etc etc... owners

There again, if you don't fill up at Tescos, you will never know, will you?

Each to there own at the end of the day lol

Yes, loads of Scoobie and Evo owners round here do use the Tesco 99 without complaint, especially with the high octane requirements of the Scoobies and Evos.

Sorry to seem rude, but I find it hard to understand how a person running a diesel can comment on the Tesco 99 that he has never used, and state, without evidence that Shell is better, or is it just a case of "Your mate Dave down the pub, saying that Tesco 99 is rubbish"?

If you can show facts and figures that Tesco 99 is failing in some way, then please forward these direct to Tesco at Cheshunt, as I know for a fact that they would be very interested in your scientific findings.

Who are you to pass on your judgement? and less of the cheek. I used to own at Clio sport before my fabia which was pushing nearly 190bhp. And I noticed a difference just like the thread starter has!!

Just another point, your opinion on Tesco 99 is totally different to those who entered the rally sponsered by the Tesco 99 fuel. There description started in c and ended in p, your a smart guy, sure you can work it out

The two miles to the gallon difference that the first poster noticed is very easy to explain if they are just using the onboard computer or the fill up and check mileage methoed, of which neither are accurate to that degree.

Judgement??? Are you now saying that you can say what you like from behind a keyboard and that others such as myself are not allowed to comment, at no time prior to your last post have you ever stated that you have used Tesco 99, only that in your opinion Tesco sell sub standard fuel.

If you wish to continue this line then please feel free to so, but just to slate Tesco without any evidence I find hard to accept.

I only state facts........................

A personal judgment on me. I have used it as I tried it in the clio, never again as I found it not to be as good as other performance brands. I aint arguing just stating a point

Of course mate. Having tried Sainsburys 97, BP Ultimate and Tesco 99, the latter gives me better MPG and the engine idels better with it.

There again, if you read what What Car has to say on the subject, we are all mugs.

I don't know if this has got anything to do with anything, but I have just been assured there are actually only two suppliers of fuel in this country - one is the Esso/BP combination, the other is Shell. My informant insisted that every other apparently different brand actually originates from one of these.

Right or wrong?????

Well, I always understood it that Tesco got their fuel via Esso. So you may well be onto something.
