Audi R8 - Has the bubble burst

Featured Replies

i can't get my head round that, trying to decide upon a 2 seater petrol sports car the obvious sensible option is a diesel coupe

thats like being in the green grocers not sure whether to buy and apple or an orange so going out and buying a sofa

:rofl::rofl::rofl::rofl:

Couldn't of put it better myself :D

You'll get arrested for that, and charged for a valet ;)

Just checked Autotrader, 51 Adverts, now if theres only 300 coming to the UK thats 1 in 6 up for sale :eek:

Most of the ads on PH were from dealers - who presumably haven't got cars to sell yet. Just trying to hike up the price I assume, or taken orders which have then been cancelled.

When was the last time you saw a porsche or ferrari advert?

I'd say as soon as you have to advertise one of these things they have lost their appeal.

I'll say this again....

The R8 is a very desirable car.... more than the equiv porsche etc All the ads are for more than list price, which means there is a big demand for them, ie more profit can be made.

If people didn't want them don't you think they'd offer the car for less than list to attract buyers ?

When last the last time Audi released an almost super car classs vehicle ?

There's a fine line - if you make something more expensive you can sometimes increase demand more than if you drop the price...it's a strange thing.

That said, with favourable reviews (both TG and 5th Gear rating it better than Porsche) and only 300 in the country, I'd be surprised if most appearing on classifieds over the next 6 months haven't been speculative purchases by people who've managed to get on the waiting lists...

They HAVE to advertise, because very few people will be convinced that it's better than an equivalent Porsche, regardless of what a few people say, and it's got no pedigree to rely on, unlike 50 years of Porsche or Ferrari sports car manufacture. Thus the man in the street has probably been in, seen, touched, maybe driven a 911, and knows what to expect. With this thing, it's £100k on spec. and the word of some journalists, until a pedigree builds up.

Depends if they're actually really advertising the R8 - I would suspect they're not.

Yes, the R8 appears in the advert, but really it's advertising the brand. Something along the lines of "look at this car, this is what we do, isn't it great? Buy a 1.6 A3 and you'll have a piece of the brand". After all, selling 300 cars at £100k a pop isn't going to make Audi a right lot of money...and the rarity will help ensure the desirability, unlike Porsches which are rather common these days... ;)

Where's this 300 number come from ?

The OP...no idea if it's true or not...

  • 2 weeks later...

I got an insurance quote on an R8 last week.

A bit better than the £4200 one of my learners was quoted for a Fabia vRS

Porsche have been advertising in What Car for at least the last couple of months, but it was only the new Cayman.. who'd want one of those anyway :rofl:

Err, me :o

I'll have a Panamera please - a V10 and in black.

In the US they advertise the 911 on telly.

£70-80k to spend on a car.

I think I'd be tempted by a nearly new Bentley GT or an Aston or maybe even a Lambo Gallardo.

Or possibly an A6 3.0TDI, + a Caterham 7 and a Triumph Speed Triple.

But £70k for an Audi. Nope.
