MPG - TFSI vs TDI (170bhp)

Don't worry Scottie, that's in reality about the mpg (41-42) I'm getting from my TDI vRS. The only time I can (possibly) get an improvement is when cruising on the M'way in thick traffic at 55-65mph when it will edge toward 45mpg.

See I'd be gutted if I'd shelled out for a TDI and was only getting that sort of return, when it would appear that a TFSI can deliver upto 38-40mpg on a decent motorway run... the reason I got both my Fabia VRS and Golf was because it was a gaurenteed 50mpg +

I think come January I'll be looking for a 12month old TFSI (private buyer so no need to worry about any tax burden).... as has been pointed out even the appeal of the low down grunt of the TDI becomes negligable due to the very TDI like characteristics of the TFSI in this department. But never fear I shall aim to get a test drive of both :)

Plus there's all the DPF issues etc... with the TDI

Thanks for the input guys... feel free to keep the observations and views on both engines coming

VRStu - the mpg from the 140bhp in the Golf does seem a tad on the low side my Dad gets in the region of 45-47 out of his (linked to a DSG in a Touran).

I did a straight run from Leeds to Leicester at 70 on cruise in my octavia scout 140 tdi and got 48mpg and after 1500 miles in just over 2 weeks the trip computer says an average of 41.9, this figure is getting higher by the day and hopefully will be in high 40s when the engines don a few thousand more miles, still contemplating a remap or tunit chip to get a bit more out of it

DPF on the TDI is not a factor or problem IMHO. Within a few years ALL TDIs will have them. In 11,500 miles I have not had one peep (regeneration cycle) out of mine.

By all means do a test drive, but I took a TFSI out for an hour a few weeks ago whilst my dealer was fettling my TDI and I found it anaemic to listen to, like a sewing machine vs. a deep growl from the TDI, the extra rev range was irrelevant as there is no more than 1500rpm drop in revs on any gear change and although strong for a petrol engine it was lacking in mid range pull.

But hey, as a private buyer (mine's a Company car) there is nothing wrong with a TFSI and you may well get a really good deal on price to compensate for higher fuel consumption/insurance etc.

Finally; if I wanted to get better than 50mpg all the time I'd buy a Polo BlueMotion! I bought my vRS TDI for its combination of style, space, performance/handling and I like TDIs; that I can get 40+ mpg most of the time enjoying myself is a bonus. :D;)

Double finally; whichever of the TFSI or TDI you finish up buying both are great cars and you will get the right one for YOU. Enjoy it. :D

Yes the TFSI engine is too quiet. My mate has a Focus ST which makes a cracking growl when booted. The Skud is a bit too civilised.

In the 26,000 miles i had my Vrs Tdi i got an average of between 42 and 45 with mainly motorway driving, i also never had a single issue with the DPF during that time, the only problem i had was the Turbo letting go, with the Focus ST i have now i am quite happy with the 30mpg average i'm getting for the same trip bearing in mind what it can drop to when you let it loose

Bit concearned now. My TDI has 12k on it and I do at least 190 miles every day on a mix of A roads, Motorway and a bit of town stuff. Sit approx 75 on motorway, and have a bit of fun on the 28 miles of A road - I cannot get more than 41/42 out of her. Even on a frequent hack down to Birmingham from Dundee no more than 43 at 75 with cruise on. However the main difference I feel between tdi and TFSI is like drive the TDI like its on fire and I still cannot get it to drop below 38MPG.

Make sure your tyres are up to pressure? I use 32-33 psi at the rear and 31 front.

Over 6000m my TDi estate has averaged 42mpg (2/3 motorway, 1/3 crawling or being thrashed between roundabouts)

If I'm half sensible on the motorway (ie no more than 80, officer) then I get 47-48mpg.

Trouble is, like an Impreza I owned a few years back, its just TOO tempting to knock it down to 4th when someone gets too close...

Over 8500 miles, I have averaged 34mpg in a TFSI estate (according to the trip computer).

This is mainly short journey's (20 miles or so) at an average speed of 40mph (I get to use the train during the week :()

95 mile trip today mostly motorway with an average of 39.5 mpg - thats a TFSI (Leon as it happens).

I had a Golf GTI DSG and regularly resulted in low to mid twenties. "Careful" driving returned about 35 mpg.

I had a Golf GTI PD 150 before and it would never drop below 30 mpg however hard I hooned it.

Hence the diesel vRS.

On motorway runs with cruise control the car returns 50+mpg (at between 60 and 80 mph) and has seen 61 mpg over a 35 miles stretch at a constant 50-60 mph.

It always returns late forties or early fifties mpg on my monthly run down to my folks in Devon (about 220 miles).

If I am just motoring in normal traffic and not "driving" I am always pleasantly surprised to see 40+ mpg on town/country runs.

Overall, including many hard drives (it is chipped after all and I don't commute, so it is all domestic and "pleasure") - it returns 38-42 mpg on a tank.

I average 48.5 mpg (11,000 miles so far), and have got between 30mpg (that was fun) and 60mpg on a real steady 60mph run over 50 miles.

On the motorway at 70 I get just over 50 to 54mpg, but I have acheived 50mpg on a 3rd lane all the way quiet motorway run over 125 miles which amazed me as I wasn't hanging about.

I've had no issues with DPF etc. Great car.

Also are we talking Private or Company car? If its a Company Car the lower CO2 of the TDI means less Company Car Tax by about £850 per annum.

I've seen you post this a few times now and so far not been bothered to comment.

Spose this is the time lol.

How have you arrived at the figure of £850 more?

I use a TFSi as a company vehicle, and it costs me around £75 a month.

The TDI can not be £850 cheaper than this !

Using the calculation from the goverment site below shows not much difference between the two cars.

HM Revenue & Customs: CCF-Session Ended

Had an interesting experience the other day.

On Friday night we took the 40 odd mile trip down to Aberdeen. Because the traffic was busy we stuck to just over 50 and were returning 58mpg according to the computer. Coming home driving more normally it was 47mpg.

Last night driving to see friends in Banff I stuck to 50 and again was in the high 50's. Coming back driving normally (for me!) was again high 40's.

MPG seems to be climbing over the past few weeks, now got just over 5k on the clock.

Test drove a TFSI today, crawled through the centre of town, gave it some beans on some open roads then crawled back through the centre of town again... result, just under 30mpg...

Under normal circumsatnces i.e. on my normal communte I reckon I'd be getting 35mpg+ no probs - but you know what, I couldn't give a toss...

The TFSI is a brilliant engine (I thought the 2.0l Turbo I had on my Saab was smooth), at first I thought I was in a deisel, the low down pull it has is amazing - on a par with my remapped Fabia VRS, the only difference is it kept on coming and coming all the way round the dial..... :D

Earlier in this thread someone estimated that it would cost around £30-£35 more per 1000 miles more for a TSFI over the TDI... worth every penny :D

Edit: If you haven't already guessed I may have just got my self an early Christmas pressie

When do you pick it up then John? What's the spec?

If you think it really pulls now you should try and get a shot in a remapped one

Just need to confirm one or two things before I'm certain (insurance and exactly how I'm going to finance)... but;

It's potentially between 2 cars (both estates)... deposit put down on an 06 Reg Silver one with;

Jumbo Box

18 inch Alloy's

Dual Climate

6 CD interchanger jobbie

or considering paying a little bit more for an 07 Reg Yellow one  (The one I test drove). Spec as above except its got the double boot floor 'thing' and privacy glass... must say looks the part in yellow with the rear tints..., however not the 'sleeper' effect I like

Would like to think either one will be one the drive in less than 2 weeks time...

Remaps - Yes !!! Whilst I was driving I was thinking about what a Revo upload on to the ECU might do... but to be honest it would be more than enough for me as standard (well give it 6 months or so)...

Only thing missing is cruise control, but as I'll be moving down to Wiltshire in the not to distant future it may not prove too hard to get this added one weekend ;)

The Yellow would certainly be a rare one, in an estate as well. I reckon it could look quite nice. I would think there would be a deal to be had on a yellow as they don't sell very well, my local dealer had one for months and months and had to take a loss on it in the end.

CC is a nice little upgrade, as long as you have the right steering controller and I think most do now.

Cool you made the right choice, bet you can't wait now? :)

I agree about the low down pull as well, nice and smooth, unlike the Fabia vRS which can be like a scalded cat :)

Please remember that the indicated MPG on the trip computers varies wildly. Mine under reads a bit, so my usual average of 43.5 mpg is actually nearer 45mpg (thats a 140PD estate, driven sensibly, but usually cruising at 80mph). I have seen 55mpg (indicated) on a really good country run, and often see 48 (indicated) on my drive home. Others have reported 5-8mpg over estimation, resulting in a depressing result when calculated using the brim to brim method. This is the only really reliable way of comparing.

Do it!

I saw a Yellow Estate the other day and it looked awesome with the sunset glass  (and Xenons...)

That's crazy.

No-one buys Yellow vRS new and then they are as popular as Nintendo Wii 'used'.

Still, as you say, 'stealth silver' is exactly that 'Stealth'; have your fun without drawing (too much) attention to yourself. :D;)

Good luck.

Great sport!!

The joys of having a Silver vRS ;)

Yes sadly now I have a non standard reg number it's not so easy.
