MPG - TFSI vs TDI (170bhp)

Featured Replies

I would say the "**" and "*£" figures, if divulged, would help explain the seemingly low mpg figure, eh bahnstomer!! ;)

Exactly so; just think of QWERTY ....

I bought my VRS TFSI on the 8th of December last year and have been meticulously keeping track of fuel economy/ mileages as i claim back a fuel allowance from work

Im currently getting roughly 303 miles out of a full tank costing approx £50.00 to fill up

If i drive carefully the car reports i could do 400 miles on a full tank

If i drive foot to the floor the car reports...im going to go bankrupt...i mean about 200 miles on a full tank

I would say my driving style over one full tank is 50/50 split between economical driving and foot to the floor.... :-P and the roads are a mixture of motorway/city (basically the SouthEast of UK)

Hope this helps :-)

MadHatter indeed! I dare say your figures are good for the purpose intended, reclaiming expenses but without knowing how much (in litres) of fuel you put in each time no-one can calculate your consumption. Sorry. :thumbdwn:

I get ya... ;)

Ah ha! thanks.

Just worked a couple of 'tanks' out and got between 25mpg and 34mpg - pretty typical for a TFSI.

  • 3 months later...
Thanks for the feedback so far guys

I think mid 40's for a TDI is low on a reasonable run....

The fact £13k ish (Looking at £15-16k for a TDI) can get you a 12 month old TFSI (delivering mid-high 30's on a decent run) combined with up to 5p a litre more for diesel has got me thinking that a TFSI might be a better option :rubchin:

Where's Welshy to do the maths when you need him?

Let me have a stab at this one...

For me the important cacluation is "Miles Per Pound" or MPP.

You can work this out by dividing the car's MPG by the price per gallon. For example if 1 litre of petrol cost £1.10:

30 MPG/(1.10 x 4.54609188) = 6 MPP

To work out annual mileage costs just divide the amount of miles by MPP:

12,000 / 6 MPP = £2000 annual fuel bill.

for comparison:

35 MPG, PETROL (at £1.10 per litre) = 7 MPP (£1,714.29 for 12k)

40 MPG, PETROL (at £1.10 per litre) = 8 MPP (£1,500.00 for 12k)

45 MPG, PETROL (at £1.10 per litre) = 9 MPP (£1,333.33 for 12k)

35 MPG, DIESEL (at £1.20 per litre) = 6.42 MPP (1,869.16 for 12k)

40 MPG, DIESEL (at £1.20 per litre) = 7.33 MPP (1,637.11 for 12k)

45 MPG, DIESEL (at £1.20 per litre) = 8.25 MPP (1,454.55 for 12k)

50 MPG, DIESEL (at £1.20 per litre) = 9.17 MPP (1,308.62 for 12k)

Based on these fuel prices, a 35 MPG petrol vRS would cost £259.74 more in fuel every 12k compaired to a 45 MPG diesel vRS.

Working this out for a 30k per year driver, this equates to a difference of just under £2,000 over 3 years (perhaps the difference in price between the two). That's before the differences in servicing costs. Would be interested to work out the merits of LPG on this equation...

Rgds, Dave

That's actually a most helpful post.

Naff-all in it then for people doing low mileages (I think I'm doing 6,000 a year or less).

If you really want to work out which is cheapest, as well as fuel costs you need to factor in servicing (maintenance) costs, insurance, registration and road tax etc, plus depreciation (what the car cost to buy, minus what you will get for it when you sell it).

Personally I think a far more important consideration is whether you will enjoy driving a diesel more than a petrol or vice versa (most people have a distinct preference) :)

I thought I much preferred diesel until I tried the petrol VRS - it seemed to have the best of both worlds. Not tried the diesel VRS yet, of course.

So even at 20k a year thats about £60/month more for the petrol. You pays your money and takes your choice :)

I make it an extra £36 a month for 20k per year. If using the 35MPG petrol versus 45MPG diesel.

it's around the £54 extra a month if you do 30k per annum. Which on the face of it is a lot more; but if you can save yourself on purchase, and maintenance... Dunno about depreciation and insurance though.

You're absolutely right though, passion has to come into it.

D

Low to mid 30s on motorway driving and anything between 20 and 30 on short journeys depending on how I drive!

i see the same, got 37mpg from a run back from bedford to sheffield, part of me wishes i got the tdi but i cant help but smile when i put my foot down :)

Sad as it is to admit I have kept a log since I got the car and can (Proudly???):o say that with 22500 miles under her belt my Diesel VRS is getting exactly 40.8 miles to the gallon.

For me this is a pretty good average for the very best and worst journeys you can make, in Central London i'll get 19-21 to the gallon, around town 30 to the gallon, and on a run about 45-50 to the gallon.

Previous diesel cars have never managed more than an average of 35MPG (mondeos, vectras etc..) so I'm extremely pleased!

Recently got my vRS TDI, very pleased, 'puter is showing 45.8mpg when set @ 90mph on m'way using cruise. Drive it at steady 55-60mph on A roads (did last Sunday when had wife 'n' kids in it all asleep!) 'puter hit dizzy heights of 51mpg! So with 350Nm of torque when required, plus that mpg return, its a no brainer! You just have to like red brake calipers eh!

I just averaged 53mpg driving on a round trip between Okehampton and Tavistock (twisty A road with lots of ups and downs) I was driving like a granny though :o

Best my Mk1 Octy got along the same route with similar driving style was 35mpg

Hmmm, I have a more difficult problem in Australia.

The vRS over here only comes in 1 model, 2.0 TFSI. So for a similar price, I have to choose between a 'plane jane' new (2007 model) 2.0 TDI or a used vRS 2.0 TFSI with about 5000kms on it. And, diesel is more expensive than petrol here anyway so the savings in fuel are a little less.

But running costs on the vRS are cause for concern, what with 18inch tyres on it, etc. It is a beaut though.

My head says TDI, my heart says TFSI.

thought fuel was supposed to be dirt cheap in Oz?

Don't you all drive round in Holdens with the 6.0L Chevy small block V8s ? ;)

If you do loads of miles a year there is a cost:passion ratio if you as me then the head says get a diesel mondeo - but 10+ hrs a week driving somthing you're totally unpassionate about. The heart says GTI/TFSI vRS...

My head says TDI, my heart says TFSI.

But does the head speak more eloquently than the heart, or vice versa ? :)

And have you considered a Golf GT TDI (very similar mechanically to the vRS TDI) ?

As far as cheap fuel in Oz, I think you might be getting us mixed up with that other ex-colony - the USA :D Here diesel (at $AU1.66 litre) is typically 20cents per litre dearer than std unleaded petrol, and 98 octane petrol (ie vRS suitable) is 2-4 cents/litre cheaper than diesel.

Cheaper than here! Over here, diesel is around $AU2.53 a litre...

"Cheaper" is still not "Cheap" :( It is a bit tricky comparing fuel costs between countries, as you need to look at other motoring and income taxes, excises, duties etc to get a true picture of how we compare. I think we can agree that the USA does have "Cheap" diesel compared with both of us (even if they get slightly short-changed on the quantity contained in a gallon ;) )

Quite right

Petrol was summit like $0.35 a litre last time I checked.

Actually, I do drive a Holden :-D. But a 1.8 Astra :-P.

I had the vRS for the week-end .... and it was really difficult to give it back .... but I would get so many speeding fines if I owned one 'cause you just can't drive this thing slowly :-).

  • 3 weeks later...

what would be great if some one could provide the gear/speed and mpg for both petrol & diesel. so e.g 6th/60mph - 40mpg
