First experience of limited slip diff!

Featured Replies

Boy, this is going to take some getting used to. I thought it was safe enough to overtake a doddery gentleman of senior years today - nothing too bad, just a 3rd gear from about 35mph. (was a 60 limit  )

Gave it about 75% throttle and pulled out as usual but I was THROWN into the other lane. It quite startled me and I actually lifted off before getting it right again and continuing the manouvere. Startled me for sure. Then I tried it in 2nd gear coming off a tight roundabout, and I nearly dived into the kerb. :o I was not expecting it to grip that well on the offside front.... :)

I feel the need to go to a very expansive area of concrete and learn to drive again... :o

Never driven a car with a LSD but hope you get used to it and enjoy it:thumbup:

Drove a turbo mini with an LSD so I know what you feel its weird and will take A LOT of getting used to

Steve

Much easier to handle when it's driving the rear wheels. :D

Back there they become a joy.

Isn't it the Focus RS that had a funky LSD and as such was a really twitchy swine when not driving on the limit?

Yes, it was the RS - apparently a bit of a bugger to master!

IIRC most of the people that slated it weren't used to driving such things.....I'll bet with time and experience it would be a right weapon in the right hands, giving RWD and 4WD a run for their money.

Give it time Jase, you'll be annihilating Porkers in no time. :D

You can't tell the difference until you press on in bends. I'm using the same as the Focus's LSD, and mine is fine nor does it make a sound when travelling at any speed.

I've never really noticed the rear LSD ont Mazda. It just works.

the one i drove felt ok , didn't really notice the diff , even when provoked, maybe i wasn't trying hard enough though

Would you recommend on onyone getting on Jason?

I would recommend it, but I was in the relatively lucky position of being able to get a spare 6 speed box, and take my time over the install of the diff, to check it was 100%, and given some early issues we had with preload, etc, I'm glad. :)

I think a LSD would come into it's own on track, especially on a diesel which traditionally suffers more from front end heavy understeer, compared to their petrol cousins. :)

Well, Dad's are older, more doddery, dribble more, tend to have larger waistlines, and are generally less fit too. :P

They can be quite 'interesting' if you are not used to them :D

I had one on the rally car (tarmac car) which was torqued right up, sounds like yours is too.

IMHO for road use you want a fairly light preload on them otherwise they can be dangerous if you are not concentrating 100%

Prob cheaper to drive to Cz

I did warn you matey a couple of times.

I was warned that the diff made the car into a different animal when pushed - but promptly forgot.

If you survive the first scare - you get to really love it.

Starting to like it now. It does inspire more confidence - almost to the point where you expect giving it more gas will actually HELP you around a bend, rather than send you into understeer city....

Did another overtake this evening in a similar style to my opening post, and I reckon although it takes a bit of courage, if you DON'T steer out as much as normal when overtaking, the diff actually takes you out nicely....

I can't wait to see what it does under full power. Oddly enough, even in a straight line, I've not had the ASR light flash once..... ;)

Naughty jason..... your supposed to bedding that wicked clutch of yours in

I've not used 100% yet at all - 75%, if that. Which might be why the ASR hasn't come on. But then I feel I have accelerated in conditions where before the LSD went in, it would have lost a bit of traction, yet now? nothing.... Another 350 miles still before I can really start to have fun....

Oi, I resemble that remark :P

Forgive me Jason, but having read this I can only think that you may be better off buying a decent rwd car.

I do appreciate what you have done to your car, but for gods sake, it's a fwd small diesel car.

Stop now, and grow up and buy a proper car.........

Hope that you will confirm the comment I made a coupla weeks ago and took a bit of flack for: it'll help your drag starts noticeably....

It's all good, eh?

Other alternative (which doesn't require any courage) is to overtake like what you were taught on that advanced training day you done :P
