Changing from fixed to variable servicing

Featured Replies

Is it possible? I'm currently on fixed, but already 5K since my last service (feb/mar) have passed so I think I am going to be better off being on variable...

Q.

Yes you should be able to switch to variable at your next service.

Good. I'll make sure the job-sheet indicates this as I know what dealers are like ;)

Q, i assume you've always used the Long-Life oil ?

Geoff, do I look like a man who knows what oil goes in? I am expecting my dealer to fill it up with the right stuff, but as it is on fixed, it won't be the long-life oil. But if they are going to change oil, I presume they can refill it now with long-life and set it to variable as well...

Errr, i thought it had to be run exclusively on Long-Life to go back to variable after being on fixed?

That's going to be the million dollar question... does it? Denis? K?

A good question, Q. The dealer I bought my 4X4 from gave me a photocopy of a faxed document sent on 13 Dec 2000 from Volkswagen Group Service to the dealer about variable service intervals and approved oils for WIV vehicles, ie those equipped for Longlife/variable service. The relevant para states:

Currently WIV vehicles have QG1 instrument panels installed during series production. If the function for fixed oil change (QG2) interval will be changed via coding, the related channels shall automatically be adjusted accordingly.

Important notice!!!

- Each change of code on the instrument panel related to the service interval must be entered in the service journal of the vehicle stating the setting of the service interval and sticker showing the date of the next inspection stating the service interval set.

- Change from WIV to fixed interval WIV for oil change may be performed.

- On the contrary, the change of WIV may be performed only under the condition that the vehicle was initially equipped with WIV at the production plant and WIV standard oil shall be used exclusively. Change of service interval must always be realsied using the vehicle system testere (V.A.G. 1551/1552 or V.A.S 5051.

That must surely have been translated properly in the interim and incorporated into documention issued to dealers!

In plain English, it states that vehicles which come from the factory set for variable service can be changed to fixed service at any stage, but once on fixed service intervals can only be changed back to variable service intervals if the specified Longlife oil has been used exclusively from new.

Check with your dealer first for the current definitive answer, Q.

Q, Number 8 could be your oil, but I would expect between

Just thinking about another angle on this.

If you were to buy the car used, there is surely no way that a dealer/Skoda could penalise you for wishing to change either to fixed or variable when you have the car serviced in your ownership ? ie They couldn't exclude you from lower running costs because of the previous owner, unless you were told when you bought it

A bit more difficult to argue if you've owned since new, but at the end of the day, Skoda give the customer the choice. Unless it says specifically in the handbook that you are NOT allowed to changed back and forward, Skoda UK cannot say you are not complying.

Valid points, and I will give my dealer a very hard time about this as well. And if he won't then I'll borrow someones VAG-COM and do it myself...
