Rich,

I saw some site suggest the Denso's were better cos they made more power on RR - i would imagine this to be some marketing ;)

Guys, sounds silly but I have no idea when my spark plugs where last changed?

Should they have been, any ill effect if they haven't?

Sparkplugs UK - Champion, Denso, Beru and NGK sparkplug suppliers

you will have to search them via the exact code though as they just list them via the spark plug codes

if you go through "Partsearch" link top left of the front page and search PFR6Q then click X-ref on the search results page. That'll give you a cross-reference list of alternatives in the NGK "6" heatrange. It's no problem using one range colder "7" to give a bit of safety margin to knock resistance.

i have no idea either. hopefully the cops changed them every six months with the serive but mines done 6k since i bought her and needs a service me thinks so thats why im changing mine thanks for the help guys

I'm not sure of the service interval... I have a feeling it's 40,000 miles! Personally I think that's far too long. I tend to change mine every 10-15,000 miles or so.

So what "happens" if you don't change them...

Cause if you're saying 40kish then mine are long due (unless they've been done).

They are not part of a service tho?

NGK BKR7E - these are a nice standard copper cored plug, one heatrange cooler than standard - they WILL work better than a fine tipped platinum or iridium and extract heat away from the tip faster so reducing the potential for pre-ignition/detonation.

The only downside is lifespan, they'll need changing more often, but at less than 2 quid each it doesn't matter

The only benefit that the fancy tipped models offers is extended service life which is the reason that VAG specify them, so they can claim you can get away with leaving them in there forever.

I pulled this from Sparkplugs.co.uk:

The spark plugs potential difference is more concentrated at the tiny Iridium tip and hence less 'spark jump' voltage is required - this can be as much as 5,000 volts less than with standard plug types. Ignition is improved and less strain is placed on the ignition system. Benefits of improved ignition/combustion include better fuel economy, increased power/acceleration and especially better throttle response.

You makes your own choices.

I believe they get done at the 40k and 80k service.

electrode gets worn, meaning a larger gap, which can then mean that the spark can get blown out by the boost.

also a worn plug can affect fuel economy.

Spark plugs do not increase power, merely to help with the fuel burn.

As Angry Dog says. You may also experience hesitation/surging/jerkyness/missfires or a general lack of power.

Ooooh, maybe I should change mine then *reads thread properly*.

Do you guys bother tightening them to a certain torque?

lets make this a little easier. whats plugs do you have on your cars guys?

Yes, it's very important to get the torque correct on the Octy as it has an alloy head. It's a low torque but I can't remember off the top of my head. I'll check tomorrow if nobody else answers first.

I've tried both PFR6Q and BKR7E in a remapped engine, both work satisfactorily, but the BKR's at £7 a set, are drastically cheaper with no detrimental effect on function apart from a shorter life (i will tend to change much earlier than most, but that's just me.. ) so that's what's staying in there.

Iam on the Denso iridium. They have reduced my surging/hesitation quite a bit.Well it was either that or the new coils

I'd need to get a torque wrench then... they much to pick up?

Nearly there now Mart :D

Every little helps :)

The one I have which covers the correct range for the plugs cost about £70. You can pick them up much cheaper, I use mine a lot and it has the feel of something which will last me a lifetime. If you plan to do the job once or twice and nothing else then a cheap one should be fine (probably around £10-£15).

i can get ngk pfr6qs for 24 quid delivered is that a bargain?

well i thought they were so just bought them :-D

Rich,

Is your Octy remapped?

Yes Mike - Custom-Code stg.1 (1.5/1.6bar boost)

Do you get the hesitation? LOL

I really need to put a boost gauge in mine. actually, that reminds me..

you were looking for someone to make a mould of your A pillar pod werent you?

Mike - I'll PM you - we'll end up taking it a bit off topic otherwise :) lol

No I haven't suffered with any of the documented hesitation issues that others have had.. I did need to play with the spring rate in the dump valve (Forge 007 piston valve type clone) to smooth out some boost fluctuation issues on part throttle when the boost came on strong, but thats fixed now.
