What Spark Plugs?

Featured Replies

Yes, it's very important to get the torque correct on the Octy as it has an alloy head. It's a low torque but I can't remember off the top of my head. I'll check tomorrow if nobody else answers first.

25-30Nm?

Spark Plug Torque Settings

Mike - I'll PM you - we'll end up taking it a bit off topic otherwise :) lol

No I haven't suffered with any of the documented hesitation issues that others have had.. I did need to play with the spring rate in the dump valve (Forge 007 piston valve type clone) to smooth out some boost fluctuation issues on part throttle when the boost came on strong, but thats fixed now.

LOL - replied ;)

I recently changed mine for Denso IK20s. Recently my fuel consumption has been noticeably worse, the opposite of what I've had when replacing the plugs before with the standard Bosch items. So overall I'm not convinced about Densos. I got mine from eBay from a guy in California, about half the UK price.

The Denso site clearly states that the plugs are pregapped, and require no adjustment. Gapping would be difficult on those plugs anyway due to the groove in the earth electrode and the very fine positive electrode.

The service intervals for plugs in our engines is 40k miles, but I've found in the past that they benefit from changing at about half that - usually the symptom is a drop in economy and rather flatter running when they're on the way out.

Torque settings for spark plugs are very low, only a little more than hand tight, especially in ally heads, like ours. They do have a tendency to work loose in this engine though, probably due to the high temperature cycles and the small threads. That shouldn't be an excuse to overtighten them, however!

Nick,

Try VK20Y's from the The Oilman, they are the tough version of the IK20's you are using, I went over to them, gapped them to 6.5 and no probs at all, and still getting very good fuel economy, 40+ on a spirited run across country.

6.5 whats?

0.65mm?

65 thou? (sounds ridiculously high...)

Think as standard the IK20s come at 0.8mm and as I said the Denso site tells you they don't need gapping.

Sorry NIck gapped down from 0.8mm to 0.6.5mm.

I fitted the ones gapped at 8mm and the thing misfired badly at top revs, gapped them down and (Touch Wood) no problems.

They will tell you they dont need gapping as they seem to fit a multitude of cars, the previous ones they supplied for my Octy vRS were SVK20R-Z8, and these had a 7mm centre electrode, which I now see they have reduced to 4mm on the IK20's and the VK20's.

Yep the smaller centre electrode (0.4mm, not 4mm :) ) is allegedly the strength of these precious metal plugs (apart from the fact that it costs money, of course!) Being a smaller discharge point concentrates the flame, allegedly.

They seem pretty adamant they shouldn't be gapped. I'll whip mine out and see what the gap actually is. It was 0.8 on the button when I put them in.

(0.4mm, not 4mm :) )

Also reducing the gap concentrates the flame as it has a smaller gap to jump across.

Oi, I'm an old boy still working in feet and inches, not this new fangled stuff............LOL

Bad fuel consumption could well be caused by the cold weather.Mine dropped off dramatically since its got cold and that was with standard plugs.

i got 40mpg yesterday for 360 miles lol

In summer you should see the difference Mike :D

Just found out, the denso iridium ik20 comes with a preset gap of 1.1mm.

Denso recommend a gap of 0.8128 for the Audi TT.

I thought the gap looked massive when they arrived.

Im impressed enough with the consumption already ;)

I think I'm going to put a set of the denso iridium ik20's in next month ;)

Ahh you fecker i just ordered the standard ones last night and they have arrived already.

Ill remember them for next time though

The vk20y's are expensive. This is the reason i went for the ik20's.

As with Nick i got them from the states loads cheaper.

What's the difference between the two in price?

I got for ik20's from the states through ebay for £22 delivered- $2=£1.

I cannot remember what i was quoted for the vk20y's (over double i think) but they are not a common plug.

The american chappie had never heard of them:eek:

Im sure Gerry will be happy to reveal where he got them from when he see's the thread again

I had a quick look on Ebay uk supplier £35 IK20 £60 VK20

I'll give Opie a call tomorrow!

Im sure Gerry will be happy to reveal where he got them from when he see's the thread again

I already have if you read the earlier post.......LOL, I got them from "THE OILMAN" on this site.

Ring Guy and he will sort you out a good price.

Then tell "The American Chappie" to go direct to the Densoglobal site, and see that Denso themselves suggest VK20Y "Tough" or Non Iridium PK20PR-P8 the Octy vRS.

They do not show the IK20 for the Octy vRS.

Yes, they may be a little bit dearer, but you get what you pay for, and why get something like a set of plugs sent from America when "The Oilman" on here sells the same product from stock???

I just ordered mine!

VK20Y 's :)
