Tools and other "DIY garage essentials"

Featured Replies

another vote for Halfords pro , i even have a few of their ratchet spanners , that get some abuse at work with no problems

I've got a set that have seen a lot of abuse over about 4 different cars and still going strong :)

Dont forget the 7mm alan key for Octy calipers.

I've become rather fond of tools in cases/racks/strips etc.

Ratchet spanners are worth their weight in gold, and if you get an adapter you can use all sorts of little "bits" in the 10mm one. Halfords had a set including bits and adapter for £59.99, reduced to £39.99... I couldn't resist!!! And it came in a nice plastic rack that slots just lovely in my tool chest drawer.

A set of torx bits is a must for working on VAG stuff.

I really rate the Gunsons Eazibleed too, but I know some people have had bad experiences (probably due to too high or low pressure in the tyre IMHO, 15PSI tends to work well).

Stanley do some nice wide jaw pliers that are ideal for the hose clips you get on the boost pipework etc.

I think as long as you keep your tools fairly clean and organised, and only use the correct tool for the job, then they will serve you well. I have a whole toolbox full of screwdrivers that have been used as chisels, stirring paint etc. Its a great way of wrecking tools, breaking them, hurting yourself and causing damage to what you were working on...

I have some hex sockets for exactly that purpose, also from halfords pro range. Work a treat too and much easier than an Allen key :)

Absolute essential ,I have always found - a partner that doesn't object/mind dirty hand marks in sink and is always on

hand with a cuppa .Perhaps we should start a post praising them for their help

Where do you get those?

i tend to buy the bits as i need them, have a huge box of different tools, just trying to find the one you need at the time.

I forgot one really important tool earlier, something you should keep in the car - a 13/16 inch wheel spanner of some sort. Probably a half-inch combi spanner too. Why one earth? Cos next time you see an attractive member of the opposite sex looking forlornly at a Morry Minor with a flat tyre you can leap out and be all chivalrous. Don't laugh! Last time I did that I got a smile that kept me warm all day....

Call that a hammer? :rolleyes::rofl:

Chris

I have a fair few Halfrauds Pro tools too. If you are lucky enough to get a trade account with them (It's not difficult) you can get 20% off most of them too.

I've just bought some Stanley cupboards to fit out my new garage which seems quite good.
