Mondeo ST TDCI or Octavia II VRS -which ?

Featured Replies

By Endura do you mean the Endura, or the TDDI or the Dagenham desugned TDCI.

I assume you mean the latter.

i mean the old 1.8 diesel that basically dates back to the 1.6 diesel that was in MK2 Fiesta and MK4 Escort , then enlarged to 1.8 and put into later Escorts, Fiestas, and then updated again for MK1 Focus with TDCI , its also fitted now in the new Galaxy and S-Max

I was under the impression that the 1.8 TDCI is a totally new engine design compared to the 1.8 TDDI and Endura.

Certainly looks different enough, or is it just a new head on a tweaked block.

Go read the reader reviews of Whatcar.com. Mondeos in general get about a 50/50 split on good/bad reviews whereas the Octavia is a lot more positive.

Thanks for all your input. I have also been looking at 2nd hand BMW 320d as well as Mondeos- but have settled for the Skoda. Im happy with lthe local dealer and was offered good deal on a new VRS. My experience with the Fabia VRS has beeen very positive also. A variety of internet reviews have the Octavia and Skoda marked high compared with Fords and BMW- and its not that BMW owners are picky, the 320d has had lots of major mechanical failures and has put me off this car altogether. Went on test drives and liked best the TDI VRS. So we will see if I am proved right.

JMTPW: I think the VAG 2.0 TDi is unacceptably noisy for a new car, in 170 or 140 variants. Idle noise always seems louder than the 1.9 to me...

I like the look of both cars both rather angry looking. I have driven 2.0 diesal octavia mark 2, good but dull. I drove a 2.2st and was quite impressed, I then recommended a mate should test drive the ford loved it bought it and still loves it 2 years latter.

I notice your car is the brabus coupe I am considering one any advice.

First post so hello out there. The car is Mr Bountyfull, I would love to be able to live up to a name like that but short and mid-aged but honest.

480

My 2006 2.2 TDCI gives 550 with ALL town driving and 600+ motorway and it's not 155 bhp either :D

The Mondeo is quite nice, but what I never understood was why did they not put the ST220 interior into it? The 220 got full recaro leather bucket seats, but the ST diesel only got slightly more supportive seats over normal?

Have you looked at the Vectra SRi? I've just got one of these after much debate over several cars (S-Type 2.7TDI, Octy VRS Diesel, Mondeo ST to name a few) Its great to drive, and quite nippy with 150bhp, which can be tuned to around 200bhp...

Just a thought!

The ONLY reason to buy one of these Vectras is because they are great value at the moment. Nearly new SRI CDTIs available for around £8k

Other than that, its just a bit, dull. :P

My mate has an ST TDCI (some of you saw it at the Merlin meet in the summer) and he absolutely loves it. Long term economy is working out at a smidge over 50mpg, but he does quite a bit of motorway work.

HI

Thanks for all the replys would also like to do mine st tdci mondeo is what i would call dead in first and second gear and then take off in third up ,what way does the octavia vrs tdi use it gears as having drove a fabia vrs it when like a rocket from gear one up to 6 gear and was pulling all the time, all comments welcome did to decide.

They have a torque limit on 1st & 2nd thats why it feels dead.

Well, I like both, but its the MK2 Vrs TDi for me

HOw does the petrol vrs compare to the diesel on mpg.

In MSN Cars recent survey for the most reliable car the Mondeo comes in at 3rd place!

Not suprisingly the Honda Civic takes second place, and the Jazz takes 1st place.

My VRS does 34-36Mpg under normal conditions 10 mile commutes with very little stopping or jams. On a run it will do about 37-40 cruising down the motorway. I reckon the ST TDCI 2.2 would do about 45. My last car was a 130 Bhp Mondeo Zetec S TDCI which was a great car and did about 50 Mpg with lots of torque for a short burst. I'd thought about buying a VRS and was finally convinced after seeing one demolish a line of traffic with its acceleration. Personally I'd stick with the petrol if you can afford it, overtaking in 3rd you can hold onto the gear and pull away whilst the diesel driver is still changing up.

OTOH I'll be gone whilst the petrol driver is still changing down and waiting for the turbo to spin up. ;)
