range on a tank

Featured Replies

i have a high mileage 110bhp 1.9tdi estate

what range are people getting from a tank of diesel - only asking as i've been driving on 1/4 tank for a few miles and the gauge doesn't seem to be dropping.

oh and is the system self bleeding if i do run out?

Is it an Elegance (or SLXi)? If so, there's a "range remaining" mode on the standard trip computer, that seems pretty accurate IME.

I normally get at least 400 miles (more if I'm doing long trips rather than my commute) between the pressure cutoff and the low fuel light, at which point you should have 50 to 100 miles range remaining.

Should add that I'm normally a quick driver, but not actually to the point of "maximum attack".

On mine I can achieve 60mpg on a run if I keep it to about 70mph (boring I know but if you're not in a rush...) so in theory on the 55-litre tank I should easily be able to get over 700 miles. In normal driving though that's more likely to be in the region of 630 miles or so.

However, on the 110bhp models I'm under the impression the economy will be slightly lower (feel free to correct me on this anyone) but with moderate driving I can't see why you shouldn't be able to get over 500 miles on a tankful.

Hope this helps.

i definately get more than 500 miles, i think it's on 550 at present

i have just calculated with 50 litres of fuel i should get 600 miles at 12 miles/l or 54mpg - wonder if the 55 litres is the useable volume or the total volume. also i wonder if the fuel light is part of the gauge resistance loop or an on off switch not connected to the gauge?

if you see a silver octy estate on the side of the A12 tonight please toot and i'll post how far it will do on a tank.

reason for the 'test' is i do 176 miles a day and i'm going for the 4 day fill if i can - the petrol cars were doing 2 days so it's really nice not to be in a garage so often. also it adds some excitement to a dull journey.

thanks for the replies folks

Pete

55 is where the pressure cutoff triggers on my car (had it just under 2 years). If you stick a small screwdriver into the pressure relief valve inside the filler cap, you might get another 4 or 5l in, but I'd not recommend doing that unless you fill up at the start of the trip.

It's great seeing how far you can get on a tank.

In my old 55 plate VW transporter, i got from Preston to Carlisle South with the fuel light on.

Took 92 litres of fuel, in what was supposed to be a 90L tank. :D

That's impressive; not like you could exactly coast up Shap either!

I know, empty van helped.

Although i did plan to stop at Tebay but day dreamt, and was overtaking coming up the hill so couldn't cut across. Doh !

Seems I need a diesel 350 miles from my 1.6LXi tank full. :'(

Sorry to thread hijack but what do SDI's get to the gallon?

I get around 470-500 from my 110tdi Elegance to fuel warning light. I recently filled up 10miles or so after trip comp show zero (approx 40 after fuel warning light) and could only get 49l into it. Bit stupid to risk it but just goes to show.

i can get about 520 miles on a full tank,

No idea what an SDi does, but the way faster TDi 90 is capable of over 60mpg.

500-600 a tank. Should work out 55mpg average, mixed. Up to 68 on a run, down to 50 mixed urban.

SDi, less power, slightly less mpg...

my god people im managing 250-270 out of a tank, your making me want to cry! Im not happy though and driving in a very uneconomical way currently.

I used to get well over 500 miles on a tank in my 110bhp Mk1 - typically between 550 and 600

about 550 miles per tank for my TDi (110)

slightly strange this. the gauge was dropping below 1/4 and then started to rise, when it rose to between 1/4 and 1/2 i decided discretion was the best bet.

601 miles: i'll post the amount of fuel when i remember to bring in the receipts.

i used to get 400 miles and 38 mpg from my old st170 focus on the same journey.

Sounds like the connections on the sender might be reversed.

you weren't on a slope? i have to park on a hill so when starting up it looks like i have 1/4 tank less fuel than i have on level ground.

I once traveled 174 miles with the fuel light on in my old MG ZT ....

.... but it was on the back of an RAC rescue truck :D:D

shoveitpusher...... a man after my own heart. I asked this question about the tdi's range in a different thread as I used to get 600 miles out of my Pug 306 xtdt if I was brave. The excitement can overrun tho'. I was once driving around France with my wife & friends in my VR6 Corrado waiting for the fuel light..... on a Sunday..... having been warned by my wife to fill up the day before...... we ran out of gas........ there was no fuel light!

Unfortunately I was thinking of my previous car, an MR2 which did have a fuel light, all very embarassing. :o

I could see better than 700 miles from my Xantia; of course that was partly due to having a 14 gallon tank!

always scares me the fuel buzzer in the skoda. always think the engines about to go or something.

fuel buzzer? I don't have one of those, and when I filled it up one day I got about 54litres in :-) The fuel light comes on with about a gallon left (approx 50-55 miles).

Smantha goes "dong" when the fuel light comes on. I suppose that means it's configurable in VAGCom.
