Rear Tyre Wear and dealer response

Featured Replies

Yeah, they know fine it's their fault, if there was nothing wrong they wouldnt have issued the bulletin. That imho is acknowledging the flaw.

If they had any sense they would swallow the cost on the people who notice this and make a claim. For the cost of an alignment check (and two tyres if needed) they would generate a lot of loyalty and good word of mouth advertising (the best type?).

As it is they are p***ing a lot of people off, who will be telling a *lot* more people about the Skoda owning experience... short sighted and dumb, and unfortunately not unique.

I have th same problem and my rear tyres have feathered & feathered bad, when in for service they blamed the dunlop sport o1 tyres & that no adjustment can be made as its a fixed axle. The noise is as others have report bloody noisey.

I would concur that the Dunlops are terrible for feathering but they should know that there is an adjustment on the rear.

I have just had my Octavia II 1.9Tdi 4 wheel laser alligned and set to revised camber settings at Nigel Langs Garage in Bolton. My experience was one of a very professional, thorough and highly knowledgeable outfit and I would recommend them highly to anybody. I got their name via www.AlignMyCar.co.uk and they charged me £74 for the job. Outstanding and thanks to Pete the technician. A pleasure to do business with and all too rare these days.

I have attached a copy of the printout in case anybody is interested. Well at least I think I have I'm pretty new to posting.

I have worked on a fair few MK5 Golfs and in particulat tourans that have destroyed the inside edge of the rear tyres. Either worn out or bad uneven wear causing droning noise from the rear.

Most cambers have been spot on, just a bad side effect I guess or maybe poor manufaturers settings.

I realise this is a MKII discussion but does the same apply to the MKI ?

I have posted a question there but to repeat, my rear tyres (Avon ZZ3) are just about shot due to scrubbing on the inside edge whilst the rest of the tread is probably less than 1/2 worn.

I thought it was a fixed axle too so what adjustment is actually possible ?

I too have been through all this, I stuck on a new set of dunlop sports just before finding out about all the geometry issues and new settings etc. So the new tyres wore uneven before the check was done in a matter of weeks, now the problem seems to have calmed down and the fronts are wearing well, however the noise from the back is a joke. As with most people the tyres have loads of tread just saw-toothed on the edges.

I join many people on this forum when i say stay well away from the dunlop sports as they are noisy as hell. When they have worn in this way they are far far worse than a potenza with the same issue. I am now thinking about sticking another new set on the back now the geo check would have hopefully improved matters. The noise in the cabin is spoiling an otherwise fantastic car. Typicaly the dunlops on the back although uneven are not wearing at all now and will last for ages, i can't put up with this that long though.

Loads of us are all in the same situation no doubt. I may just stick a set of budgets on the back just in case there is no real fix for the problem and they wear uneven too, £100-£120 is better than throwing away almost £200 every few months!!

I have moved the tyres front to back and had them rotated to put the uneven side on the outer edges, none of this make any difference, i think you just have to face the cost of a geo check and a set of new rubber or like me at the moment, turn up the radio.

Not quite sure on the bumping of older threads, but I have had the rear tyre fiasco on my 07 vRS tfsi for some months.

Finally got round ot taking it into the dealers for a road test and they commented that 'some' cars show this sign of rear tyre wear and they suggested the 4 wheel alignment and 2 new rear tyres.

So that's a fair old bit of cash, especially as the rears were only recently replaced.

I did push them to see if it would be done as a warranty claim due to Skoda knowing about the faults, but was hit with an almost solid wall of no. If I want to take it up with Skoda I am ok to do so, but I get the feeling that they will just fob me off.

Just one more glitch that will see me take my business to another make next year, despite the fact that apart from all the niggles I love the car. :(

I went to a dealer with my bad rear camber and tyre wear problems when the car was about 6 months old.

The reply I got was - and I quote: "Go to a VW dealer, they can do 4 wheel alignment for about £75".

What are the (very) early signs of uneven wear due to wrong alignment settings?

Check the tread depths all the way across the rear tyres, make a log of them month by month, this way you can spot a wear pattern more easily.

Any deviation in the measurements could mean an alignment issue. It also doesn't help if heavy loads are carried in the boot often as the rear suspension will induce some negative camber under load. Excessive rear tyre noise is also a sign.

Make sure your tyre pressures are correct also, if incorrectly inflated your tyres will wear out unevenly. I would think a little under inflation will accelerate any camber related wear.

Just seen and read through this thread and amazed that the OP has got all up tight about rear tyre wear (yes; I know we know the Octy is sensitive to rear camber setting) BUT has not batted an eyelid about "and the front set needed replacing as they were showing the cords on the inside " which is surely far more serious.

A golden rule check your tyres regularly for pressure, wear and condition; do not rely on your dealer doing it at service when it may well be too late to correct any problems.

I seem to be in the minority here. I took my car back to the dealer 6 months after buying it because the rears had nearly worn through on the insides. The DID give me all the 'could have hit a kerb, pot hole, etc' but said they'd look at it. Couple of days later they asked me to pick it up and told me that they'd had it 4 wheel alligned, gave me a copy of the printout, and that they'd put two new tyres on the back. They did say that they would need to take it up with Skoda and that we could 'sort it all out later when they heard from the manufacturer'. That was about 8 months ago, i've been in there a few times (including a service and MOT that they did at a very good price) and they've never mentioned the rear tyre issue since.

Hi guys , my car sits low on the rear , I've noticed lately after seen others cars around that mine is much lower . I don't drive it often , but went for a blast last night and it was all over the place on the rear . I had a look under neath and noticed the inside of both rear tyres gone through the wire and canvas , waiting to pop , the rest of the tyre are like new . It's an 11 plate Vrs
