New (and different) Tyre/wheel question

Featured Replies

Hi

I'm thinking of swapping my wheels round, front to back, to try and even out tyre wear.

Is this something I should be able to do myself, or should I step away from the spanners, and ask a professional in case of tracking/ alignment issues ?

ta.

diy without a doubt:D

I'll need 2 jacks, or some axle stands, right?

if you have a decent trolley jack (check max weight) you can jackup both the front and rear wheels on the same side at the same time by carefull placement of the jack under the car. Before doing this ensure that the handbrake is applie properly and that the front wheel on the opposite side is chocked front and back.

Best to take off the front wheel, put on the spare, take off the back wheel, put the front wheel on the back and then finally take off the spare and put the back wheel onto the front.

Safer than jacking up front and back at the same time (although it'll take a hell of a lot longer!)

I think that's a waste of time. There is one in million chances that the car will fall off the jacks. If you don't have 2 jacks, jack the car up on one side and just put a piece of wood where the jack should be and use the jack to lift the other end of the car.

As for jacking the whole car up with only one jack - I'm not sure about that - as most cars have strengthened spots where you're supposed to jack the car up, and that's certainly not the in middle of the car.

The balance point, is far ahead of the centre of the car due to the weight of the engine at the front. Its quiet possible to lift the whole side using the front factory lifting point.

and does anyone know if the OEM Bridgestone Turanzas are directional, or can I swap opposite corners ?

2 axle stands from Halfords, £12

;)

I remember on my old corsa as it was so light we jacked it up then stuck an old set of alloys under it to balance it on while we took all the wheels off and painted my calipers.

Ahhh, back in the day

Respekt

they will be fine i did the same to mine :D

When swapping fronts to rears shouldn't you also swap sides ie rear os to front ns? Thats what I was allways told but won't work with directional tyres?

that's why I asked if the Turanzas were directional ;)

Thats wrong... they have to stay on the same side ;)

Any tyre, such as your Bridgestones, that's directional will have a large arrow with one barb on the side-wall indicating the rotational direction ________\ (something like that).

lol I used to own a 405 D Turbo and one day I decided to give the wheels a refurb so me and my mate jacked the car up and put it on axle stands and made sure it was completely safe before taking the jacks away... we had both front wheels off at once...

then we walked away I was carrying a wheel and so was he... next minute I hear a slow scrapping noise then a sort of shudder so I quickly turned road and threw the alloy I was holding under the car just as the car slipped off the jack and luckily the jack slipped off onto the sill lol...

turns out the jacking point had rusted a wee bit and crumbled lol

so safer to do one wheel at a time and keep the car on the ground with using a spare rather than risking it lol

The Proxies on my Lupo even have "left" and "right" stamped on the tyre wall...

Turanzas are asymmetric but not directional, I've rotated mine.

And you can safely jack one side at time if you've got a 2ton trolley jack or better. Just loosen the wheel bolts first before jacking and tighten and torque them when its back on the ground

So do mine, now that I've fitted Toyos! Cool or what, eh! :D
