vRS - Do you really use its performance

Featured Replies

I think that for most folks, the lazy ease of driving a diesel is worth more to them than a petrol engine that has to rev to 7000 odd rpm in order to get the most oomph out of it!

But thats simply not the case. The 2.0TFSI is easier to drive at low rpm, and LOADS of low down torque, I'd stick my neck out and say its lazier to drive than the diesel if thats what you like. :) The power comes in at as little as 1500rpm, and smoother to boot.

And don't get me wrong, I love diesels, especially the PD130 I had in my Fabia vRS and Passat Estate :)

Let's just say this. My average mpg is 18mpg.

You have to admit 30 mph at 800 rpm is pretty laid back, even at 60 mph it's only 1,800 rpm.

You'll see 140mph before you hit 4,200 rpm!

And it does technically produce more low down torque.

Musing on the way to work today on the M60 sat in the inside lane, how often do peeps really use the available performance? On the commute I now cruise at 65 ish in the inner lanes to maximise fuel consumption and stay away from the road rage of the outside lane (Im sure you know what I mean!) Its only every now and again that I stretch the cars legs, mainly in acceleration mode. Making me wonder if I should have got a diesel instead!, had these thoughts with my mk1 vRS and then went and bought a mk2 vRS petrol!

use it quite a bit c'mon their not that fast

Um, another petrol vs diesel debate :)

The Mercedes-Benz developed DiesOtto can't come quick enough! (that or the new compressed air Tata-mobile)

I aint gone above 110 in my TDi and probably never will. As I dont drive the car that much other than at weekends with the family, I have gone out a couple of times of an evening for a blast round the country roads of Fife to clear out the cobwebs (DPF).

I do use the acceleration though, even with SWMBO and 2 kids in the back back off the gas once Im up to a safe and reasonable speed. I have had to use the acceleration a couple of times to get out of a sticky situation that other motorists have created, so Im thankfull for the ooommph in gear.

I consider myself as been a decent, considerate and safe driver so driving round at a vehicles top speed isnt something I feel confident with, in other words Im not gonna drive above my ability.

Steve

Can I just say, that when I say I use the performance, 3 figure speeds aren't a common occurence ;)

I drive around 35k a year and a lot of that is motorway driving.

What I like about the tfsi is that for motorway driving it can just stick at 70-80 with the flow of traffic, and average around 35mpg.

Then when I get off the motorways I can have a bit of fun on the backroads and still get an average of 32mpg overall.

Cracking car and the best I've had yet I'd say.

I doubt anybody drives them to their potential all the time as the speed limits and road conditions won't let you.

However, pulling off roundabouts and blats of acceleration give a good sense of performance and put a smile on the face.

Never driven a diesel vRS, but after having perfume burners for the last 14 yrs I wanted a change :)

ive got a 2.0fsi, there's only been a few times in the near year i have had it that i wished it was a vrs. Guess with the congested roads these days and speed traps you just cant get away with what you use to""

Um, another petrol vs diesel debate :)

How can it be a debate? Petrol is the best, end of ;):rofl:

Chris

I like to use the cars performance when I can, and occasionally take a detour on the way home from work. Also I like how easy it is to get up to speed and down motorway slip roads.

Totally agree, but I can't afford it! (can the little blue planet?)

The little blue planet will do just fine. It's only the squishy pink things that live on it that have issues.

A couple of points/questions:

How useable is the performance in the real world? For example, pulling out of junctions when it is slippery, do the front wheels scrabble for grip etc? I have read that torque steer is non-existent. Is that really the case?

Secondly, for those that remap and chip, how useable is all that (expensive) extra performance in the real world? Or is it just for trackdays?

Nor me. It has to be a diesel with the miles i do. Plus i get paid 40p a mile regardless or petrol or diesel so to make the most of the 40p's it makes sense to buy a oil burner.

Pulling out of junctions - slippage dictated by you - the driver, not the car.

Torque steer is totally non existant.

After a remap, it is all very usable still (stage 1 I mean), as the torque increase mid range makes overtaking more swift, thus safer.

Yep, what Dave says... never experienced torque steer in my petrol one, and even a 1.0 Corsa will scrabble for grip if you drive like a hooligan ;)

On another note how many have red lined theirs, and how often??

Ive never done, afraid in case i hurt the car:rofl::rofl:

Mick:thumbup:

I take mine to about 6000rpm pretty much daily, but it seems pointless taking it any further (red line at 7000rpm?) as the power starts to tail off... Don't know what the score is when "fettled" though ;)

As long as you don't live on the red line, using the cars performance won't hurt it at all, infact its beneficial to not pootle about the whole time. :)

I have redlined yours Mick

I often use the cars performance, but generalyy on the quieter roads and at points along motorways, and for overtaking.

The ability it has to put a large amount of torque down with no real hassle is excellent.

I generally trundle along in the car for work, sit at or just below speed limits, but once im on the homeward journey, i tend to get a little bit more entusiastic.

Mick:thumbup:

I don't redline it, but i did over-rev mine a while back, by pure accident - missing a gear - scared the crap out of me with the cars history and all...

I was just coming out of a queue of motorway traffic due to an accident, so had a fairly clear road in front, and a Leon FR behind - decided to give it some welly to cover some ground etc, but as i was going from 4th to 5th, i accidentally went back to 3rd... The revs went up to the high 6000's, and i slammed the clutch down, and put it into 5th - the car then had NO go atall, it wasn't making boost or anything. I even downshifted to 4th then to 3rd because i was losing momentum and wasn't accelerating, even with my right foot buried. After about 20 seconds, the car seemed to come back to life, and slowly starting working normally again. Odd.

Also, similarly, i took a roundabotu in 6th at sub 30mph speeds, the car cut out and wouldn't restart for a good 3-4 minutes...

Must have confused the poor thing...
