Upgrading laptop memory?

Featured Replies

Thought its about time I upgraded my laptop memory, currently at 512MB. Took a look under the cover on the back to find out the current memory speed so I could buy the same, however theres not a stick of memory in there. Just an empty slot and a wireless card.

Where is the current RAM then? Is it held on a chip on the actual motherboard, and non user changeable? So maximum possible memory is 2.5GB? :confused:

Also how do I find the current memory's speed. Tried using Aida32 but it doesn't display - I know Aida32 is outdated, so is there another program that tells you about your computer?

BTW its a HP Compaq nx6310.

Many thanks! :)

This is what I got

* Maximum Memory Capacity: 4194304 MB

* Currently Installed Memory: 512 MB

* Available Memory Slots: 1

* Number of Banks: 2

* Dual Channel Support: N.A.

* CPU Manufacturer: GenuineIntel

* CPU Family: Genuine Intel® CPU T2300 @ 1.66GHz Model 14, Stepping 8

* CPU Speed: 1662 MHz

* DDR PC2-5300

To me that means there another slot somewhere when the 512MB stick is held. But where?

Normally under the keyboard. Screw (s) that holds the keyboard on should have an icon next to it underneath.

Upgrading laptop memory can be a pain as in many cases it's hard to get at the memory. There are exceptions - I'm typing this on a Toshiba Tecra where all you have to do is undo one screw on the base.

Yeah theres a compartment on the bottom where an empty slot is available for one stick. But the other one is 'missing'.

No diagrams elsewhere on the lappy pointing to where the other memory could be. Looks like I'm gonna have to do some reading :o:D

EDIT: Mouse wins :thumbup: The extra slot was hidden under the keyboard, pulled it apart and found it. (also found lots of crumbs and dust :thumbdwn:)

Many thanks all :D

A lot of laptops have the memory built in to the motherboard, and as such is non-removable, but they have a second slot for expansion. It looks like your's is one of them :)

No I've got two slots :D One easy to get to and one not so easy.

Now do I need 2 or 4gb...

Is there any benefit to having both sticks the same size? I.e could I stick a 2gb stick in and be done with it?
