Faulty Speedo & Fuel Gauge - Solved

As first post, the needle swings between the current speed and zero. It has the hallmarks of a loose connection that is intermittently receiving and then losing the correct speed information.

That's 'good'. That excludes the worst case scenario where the drive cog in the gearbox has cracked and is spinning on the shaft.

One place you may need to check is in the connection box in the plenum chamber. This is where the wire to the dash changes colour. The connection box lid is under the windscreen wiper motor. If the lid isn't sealed that well, then water can 'wick' along the wires and cause corrosion at the connectors

Hi, after installing a new clutch myself I have the same problems now I know what the problem is after we started stripping every thing off of the gear box and the speed sensor came apart and there was a wee pinion inside, the problem is when putting everything back together I found the pinion on the shed floor in 2! Can anyone tell me the correct name for pinion?! And if I can buy it on its own or if I have to replace whole sensor does the pinion come with it? And what is the correct name for the sensor? It's a 51 reg skoda octavia 1.9 tdi I can post pics if needed! Thanks

I forgot to post an update but after it started waving again I fixed it by replacing the transponder. We'd overlooked this previously as it had already been replaced about 2 years ago but upon taking out the 'replacement' it didn't look particularly new. Sounds like the garage that did it might have just used one they had lying around rather than a brand new part.

Are you asking about that part, mal, or something inside the gearbox? The garage called my part a speedo transponder and it was dirt cheap. Teeny pic attached.

Yeah that looks like it indeed but does the little spindle that goes inside it come with it as well because that's what is broken with mine? Thanks for the reply

Hi All i have just joined this forum as i seem to be having one problem after another with my 1999 skoda octavia 1.9 TDI Estate.. the latest being the speedo problem you all have been talking about.. it all started about a year ago when all the needle gauges i.e. the speedo, rev counter, fuel and the temp gauge would just go to zero and back to reading correctly again.. no pattern to it, some times it would be every five minutes and then OK for weeks and about six months ago it seemed to fix it's self for months, but now it's not working at all. .every thing else on the speedo dash board works fine just all the needle gauges don't.... I will look into all the tips given on this forum and report back... cheers.. any thoughts welcome..
