Winter wheels and tyres Octavia vRS

Featured Replies

We have just ordered a black manual petrol Octavia vRS Estate which is coming with Gemini 18 inch wheels.  Delivery is to be in a couple of weeks as the car is already built and in the UK. Shortly after we take delivery we have to drive to Stockholm so will need some winter wheels and tyres. My wife has taken a fancy to the Skoda Turini 18 inch black wheels which we saw on a black Octavia Estate in the showroom. However I would rather get a smaller size 16/17 inch. They have to be similar to the Turini's to keep she who has to be obeyed happy. Does anyone have any suggestions? I realise the usual route is to get a set of steel wheels but we intend to keep the car for some time and we will regularly have to go to Sweden in the winter so don't mind some expense!

You need 17" minimum for VRS due to brakes so no steels for you unfortunately. Quite a few aftermarket choices, or alternatively just go with the OEM ones your missus wants.

I have recently ordered ATS Radials (7.5x17" 5x112 ET50 70.1 in graphite) plus Nokian WR D3's 225/45 R17's for my VRS. Total price was £675 from tyreleader.co.uk (based in Germany). The wheels have already arrived and included necessary spigot rings and 20 new hub nuts. I ordered the tyres 2 days ago (after receiving the wheels and proving to myself that tyreleader were reliable), and expect to receive them early next week. The wheels themselves look very nice, being similar to stock anthracite Geminis. The Nokian D3's are very highly rated by ta Swedish colleague of mine.

16s won't fit, some 17"s wont fit, so be careful on the sizing.  (the rims need to fit ove the large front brake calipers)

I got my blue vrs with the Gemini alloy but have recently fitted a set of black turini's with conti winters and most of my mates actually think the car suits the winter wheels better!

Yup the Turinis are nice - I had a look at some Autec 17" wheels - called Wizard and Fanatic - the latter is a bit similar. Ended up with BBS Himalaya.

Here's pics of both the scout has rs6 copies with the nokian d3 very good in standing water and a lot quieter than I thought they would be!

and remember that you must have snow chains with to sweden.

Can you link a source to that requirement. Tak.

It is not a legal requirement but I've been told by an officer that you can be fined if you can not get out because they do not have the right tires on

The Danish automobile association writes that you only need winter tires in Sweden when the weather is wet and temperature is around zero or if there is snow and ice on the roads. http://www.fdm.dk/daek/regler-vinterdaek-andre-lande (in Danish).

Winter tires should be marked M+S or equivalent, have 3mm threads, and must appear on this list: http://stro.se/wp-content/uploads/2014/05/Winter_141216_English.pdf

Chains are optional.

Any chance you could post a photo or two of the ATS Radials when you've got them fitted please? I'm tempted by these myself, but it would be useful to see how they look on the car first. Thanks

Here are mine. Michelin Alpin 225 35 19. Looking forward to giving them go especially given the size of them and having previously downsized for the winter.

Fair play to you for using 19" as winter and the xtreme as will.

I like my xtreme to much to do that to them they are summertime only

Thanks for all your response. They have really helped. Have decided to go for 17 inch wheels. Concerned that I need to get the correct sizes etc. Can anyone confirm which size will fit? My preferred option is Team Dynamics Pro Race 1.2

Will do as soon as the tyres arrive. I can take pics of the rims now if you like, but they are naked.

Great - thanks

I have the ATS Radials and they look nice, provided you don't get some 4r$€hole of taxi driver come at you and forces you to mount a kerb at speed!   :@

Just had one repaired at a cost of £72. I would take a picture of them on the car, but they're not on the car, as the weather's too mild and with the forecast for the week ahead stating that it's likely to go back into double figures again, they'll be staying the garage a while longer yet.

Fitted this morning and only done 15-20 miles so far. Intitial impressions are that the car rides a bit "softer" but grip is greatly improved over stock Conti's on cold damp roads (2-3 degrees). Tyre noise is pretty minimal but I have only been up to 50-60mph.

Note that the front wheel arch is riding hight because I have ~60kg of old tyres in the boot and the ground is uneven. Also, my car only gets washed when it's warm.

That tread pattern is more or less identical to a Conti TS830!

And the uniroyal m&s+ I have on mine.
