  1. Government BIK rates are now aligned, there is no difference between petrol and diesel the rate you're stung for is based on emissions and the projection over the next few years it goes up by ~4%. EU emission laws are such that the only way this government can comply easily is to reduce speed limits, plenty of 50mph limits where it used to be nsl purely to reduce emissions in those areas as opposed to a safety concern. One more reason to leave the failure that is the EU. As has already been said, the decision of petrol v diesel is purely down to mileage covered. If you want to 'beat' the system then get a hybrid. Lower emissions and better mpg, win win for now at least. Look at a BMW 330e if money will allow. After 16 years of petrol ownership followed by 10 years diesel I am back to petrol and will be from now on.
  2. I'm not dissing the results but the perfect air fuel ratio is 14.7:1 are you sure you've written your post the right way as 12:1 is worse and running slightly rich. Oscarli also need to work on their website. It doesn't promote them very well.
  3. I only noticed the elements in my screen the first couple of drives in it. 3 years later and the only other times in that period I've noticed it is when it's switched on and does a great job of clearing the screen. By the time the screen is clear the engine is still cold so wouldn't have done a damn thing to defrost the screen on blower power alone!
  4. I went from an 06 Mondeo ST TDCI to a 2.0 TDI 150 Elegance. The ride was better in the Mondeo, the engine was punchier but there is just as much space in the Octavia with a lot more toys. I get to drive a different car just about every week and can compare the Octavia to quite a few others. A C class Merc is a nicer place to sit but you really pay for it. A new Mondeo is a better car all round but again, you pay a alot more for it. The Insignia is not as nice in any area. A Mk7 Golf has better build quality but is 's smaller and more expensive. ultimately for the size and money nothing can touch it. I'm at the end of my 3 years with the Octavia. I looked at a BMW 330e to replacd it but in the end a lovely Mk5 Golf GTI Edition 30 now sits outside my house!
  5. I was in China while this was happening. The issue related to the boxes overheating in stop start traffic. Well nearly the whole of Shanghai is stop start. Truly awful. New mineral based oil I believe was the permanent fix.
  6. http://www.oilspecifications.org/articles/vw_motor_oil_specifications_explained.php Interesting read.
  7. Longlife oil is exactly that. No need to do any oil changes outside of what the car tells you it needs unless you are doing lots of small trips without getting up to temperature...then an early change may be beneficial. If you must have it done then any garage can do it just make sure they use the correct stuff.
  8. I take it from that statement you live off barracks? You should be able to claim mileage unless it was your choice to live there after your posting. I used to get over £300 a month in my hand for commuting from Durham to Catterick as I was already living there before posting to a new unit.
  9. You have a 2 year old car with 8,000 miles and you're debating whether to get a brand new lower spec and slower car? Unless you are doing it for purely financial reasons I would keep the Octy.
  10. Mines one of the earliest models from 2013. Ordered 1 week after launch.
  11. Under £100 for a 600 sports is truly fantastic but £136 for a Superbike is unbeatable. Ah the benefits of age and a North East postcode!
  12. 80mph is 2400rpm, the DSG geRbox has different ratios to the manual by almost 20% higher revving which is one of the reasons the diesel DSG is worse on fuel and has higher emissions.
  13. Mine is far too sensitive for that, the brake pedal position for the engine to restart has the clutch biting and trying to move forward slightly. Any further pressure on the brake to pedal to stop the forward motion and the engine stops. Literally the setup is stopped with a +/- 0.01mm pedal movement tolerance.
  14. if you're on a gentle downhill gradient it will be in 5th at about 32mph. It's never tried to be in 6th at that speed in the past 21 months of driving.
  15. Insurance is the one good thing about being up North. XR3i when I was 22 (22 years ago) and I was quoted £400 which I thought was expensive. Obviously it was fantastic compared to your quote! Most expensive quote I've ever had was £5000 when 19 for an Escort RS Turbo....didn't buy the car Now I'm an old fart insurance isn't an issue, £150 a year for a 186mph, sub 3 seconds to 60mph Superbike!
  16. Did you have any accidents in your company car? If not you can legitimately claim the 6 years NCD. Just get a confirmation letter about the no claims via your fleet manager.
  17. A 2.0 TSI VRS is fine, they just need to use the Golf R engine, I see your 1.6 200Hp and raise you 2.0 296Hp.
  18. Firstly I'll apologise as my post isn't about a Skoda but is related to real life mpg. We (should) all know the test Clarkson did with a Prius and an M3 around their test track, the Prius was flat out, the M3 only had to keep up and the M3 had better economy. Well, I had a Prius for 2 weeks in the states, it keeps track of your consumption on a trip by trip basis and gives a graph of the last 10-15ish journeys. The fuel computer said that I was averaging 85-100mpg. When I filled up the real life economy was 41. To be honest it needed to be capable of going 20mph quicker on pure electric power (30mph as standard), 24 mile further range (6 mile as standard) and about 50lb/ft more torque. Horrible, horrible car. My diesel Octy is significantly better and my new (to me) Golf GTI edition 30 that's sat at home waiting for me is better still.
  19. You have to take into account that once upon a time a K&N/Pipercross/Whoever filter was fitted to a vehicle and it made more power so they can legitimately claim that on all their advertising. It just means that the original vehicle had a horrendously restrictive air filter as standard. Modern filters are good for flowing 25-30% more air than the engine requires so even with a stage 1 remap you do not need to change your OEM filter.
  20. I know there's insurers that comparison sites don't use but comparethemarket.com or confused.com will give you a really good range of prices which you can arm yourself with when dealing with other insurers.
  21. Just gotta say you're a brave man if you're willing to play around with VCDS when you didn't know how the radio operates.
  22. Is it a genuine Skoda SD card? No other card will work for the navigation. As Jonesy220 said, i's it in the correct slot?
  23. Because they give the job to the 17yr old apprentice who knows naff all.
  24. New Esso garage opened near me, filled up but thought I'd used more fuel than what went in. Tried the nozzle in different positions and angles, 4 clicks later thought OK, better on fuel than ever before. drove off and thought I had a leak, gauge dropped by 2 marks over 30 miles where normally it doesn't budge for 70ish miles. must have been seriously frothy, receipt for litres added tallyed up with the miles previously covered. I dont use that garage for diesel any more.
  25. The DSG box is not as well suited to a diesel engine as it is to a petrol one. It's better than the previous VAG slushmatic autos but has it's weaknesses. Great if you're feeling lazy, in traffic, left foot's fallen off etc. but worse on fuel, hessitant sometimes and just not well mated. You have got to test drive both and find what suits you.
