How much is affordable?

Well my Superb 272 was only standard for 6 weeks before having the map but the best it managed with only 283bhp )actual rolling road figure) was 45mpg but that was during last winter and in the summer it managed 48mpg down to Newquay in Cornwall but temperatures were much higher (26C). You will see the worst economy figures over the next few months but from Spring (March) you should she a gradual improvement. The 66 litre tank on the Superb gave me typically 560 miles but the Newquay trip suggested nearly 720 miles so longer trips make a big difference.

Have you tried selecting Eco at the start of each journey in driving modes and lifting off early for traffic lights and roundabouts and you will be amazed at how much fuel you will save. My DSG 4WD Superb averaged 40mpg despite weighing 1,660kg and having 360bhp available thanks to a stage 1 map. Keep using Eco for a month and see if you can improve even 10% to say 28/29mpg, worth a go at least as it won't cost you anything to try.

Similar story to you guys but since having regular NHS check ups every 5 years starting at age 45 I've noticed my weight steadily climbing and at age 50 I was recorded at a GP Surgery at 94kg then again at 55 I was now 98kg so 4kg gain in 5 years. Tend to do good long walks in the summer and on holiday but can't be bothered going to the gym, So during 2 weeks of quarantine jumped on a free gift from my Dad and didn't realise how addictive exercise can be. Now down to 92kg after over 700km on the fitness bike and it seems to burn about 100 calories every 10 minutes and today I have set myself a distance target of 40km and will update on my progress on my own thread. I'm now 56 and 6 feet tall. I think it is good whatever exercise we all take to look after ourselves because we owe it to our partners, family and most importantly to the NHS staff to stay healthy. I had an Airtec cone filter on my 245 when I went stage 2 but not sure if it added any extra power because it had a full Milltek exhaust, a downpipe 3" and an Airtec Intercooler fitted at the same time along with the stage 2 map (only £100) to give an extra 34bhp up from 302bhp at stage 1 to 336bhp. TBH I really liked the sucking noise it made and even the wife liked it when she drove the car and asked me what made it. It made the car sound sportier even at low speeds around town without being as bad as a DV. Cost around £300 fitted which isn't cheap but I spent over £3,000 on my 245 and it certainly added to the aural drama which the standard 245 lacks sadly. If I bought another 245 then I would get it done again for sure.

It's the torque I like. The 150PS diesel probably has the same max torque figure of a 272/280 but much further down the rev range. Although this engine produces 110kw of power sometimes see on the virtual dash it is using just 4kw at 70mph which makes you wonder what a waste having 200kw under your right foot is.

My previous Mk2 Superb diesels were all manuals with the 140PS engine but they would only do about 475 miles for about 45 litres (they had a 62 litre tank from memory) so about 48mpg and the best trip I managed was the 2014 facelift which once did a 66mpg journey. I believe the fact that the 2020 model is on average 75kg lighter than the previous Mk3 models, longer gearing and improvements to the DSG with lower cruising rpm all help to achieve the improvements. I would usually remap a car like this but it has enough power (0-60mph in 9.1 seconds) so will be leaving it standard, top speed is still 135mph unlike most EV's which are capped at around 90-95mph.

Yes just like an F1 car using KERS which can harvest energy for the alternator to charge the battery the recovery of energy is gained by either pressing the brake pedal or lifting off the brake pedal (coasting in a DSG car in Eco mode) which is why even F1 drivers sometimes coast on the straight to recover electrical energy which results in the red flashing light on the back of the back to warn other drivers they are slowing down but importantly not actually physically pressing the brake pedal. Even an F1 car can save quite a bit of fuel by doing this and not losing much lap time in the process as the recovered energy can be used by the driver by pressing a button on the steering wheel for improved performance exiting slow corners. The 3.0litre V10 engine produced 900bhp, the 2.4litre V8 produced 780bhp and the latest 1.6litre V6 Turbo with KERS produces 950bhp. Lessons learned in F1 have been gradually introduced into road cars.

Having owned a 2015 model Vrs 184PS DSG it is Skoda making the cabin feel different or special from other models with a Mode selection button. It just gives you the same options of Normal, Eco, Sport or Individual unless the car has the optional DCC when you gain a comfort mode for the dampers. It's just sporty BS like the Vrs badge on the bottom of the flat steering wheel.

Last 7 days my car has been used much more than the first 8 weeks covering 327 miles with 605 left in the tank. Computer suggests 63mpg average but it was around 3mpg optimistic first time.

Checked the Continental Sport Contact 5 tyres for decibels and they are not even rated very good for low noise levels with 71 DB.

John I did a review of our petrol manual 1.5TSi SEL last month at 34 months of ownership and my wife covered 22,000 miles in the first 2 years but since she has been working from home this year her car has covered just 6,000 miles in the last 12 months at an average of 46mpg.

Well compared to my previous 2 Skoda's an Octavia 245 with 235/35R19 Michelin PS4 and a Superb 272 running with the same wheels and tyres it is much quieter and a better ride comfort and the leather seats better than the sportier buckets in those cars. Helps only having 18" alloys with 235/45R18 tyres. Don't think it has laminated front windows but the 7 speed DSG (you may have had the older 6 speed) lowers revs at motorway speeds (70mph/113kph) to just 1,600rpm. The Octavia would sit at 2,300rpm (6 speed manual) and the 272 would be 2,000rpm (7 speed DSG). The EVO is a brand new design probably like the 200PS diesel taken from Audi and also used in the latest Mk8 Golf GTD and 4WD version of the Octavia VRS Mk4. I always buy Hatch Superb's because Estate tend to have a resonance or boom at motorway crusing speeds. A friend has a 400bhp Mercedes CLS diesel and his 9 speed Auto does just 1,200rpm at 70mph.

You would be amazed by the latest Matrix LED headlights on the 2020 Superb plus I like the Canton in my car for 1980's Rock music including Europe and the seats fit my long torso and 1.85m height. Agree about the handling comfy straightline nature of the Superb as most of my miles are motorway but my diesel is really quiet with very little wind or tyre noise (Continental Sport Contact 5). Friend has a XC60 which is ok but not something I would buy. It sounds like a tractor next the latest EVO 150PS diesel engine.

My Dad has a 2012 Superb Estate with the 170PS diesel engine and 6 speed DSG and having driven it I can confirm that his 8 year old car will happily change into 6th at 40mph. My 2020 DSG with an extra cog likes to do at least 46mph before engaging 6th.

If you have the driving mode button selecting Sport will keep the gearbox in a lower gear rather than selecting Eco which will select a higher gear earlier to drop the revs and save fuel.

Think the intercooler is larger on the 272/280 also as was pointed out on the new £37,000 Golf GTi Clubsport which shares much with the old 296bhp Golf R.

When my Superb diesel engine is cold sometimes it won't change from 6th to 7th until you are going at least 63mph whereas when it is warm it will change up as early as 53mph. Must be to protect the gearbox (DSG) while it warms up sufficiently.
