  1. Any faults logged? Stage left suggestion - brake light switch. Common fail and if dicky and operating under some circumstances (ie a corner, sticking after braking etc) then the engine management will cut the power. Doesn't cost much and easy to change - so might be worth doing anyway. Does it have cruise control and is that playing up as well? This failed on my mkI a few years ago - just a thought. On the original post "I've taken it for a blast and was fine ish until I turned of main road where it did it again" - am guessing you had used the brakes turning off the main road - sticking switch?.
  2. You also have to keep an eye on the rear suspension beam/arms - thick metal to start with but can eventually succumb. A failure of this can have similar catastrophic outcome and it's not always obvious on MOT inspection. Having restored various cars over the years I've tried and tested various rust proofing techniques. Latterly on exposed suspension, subframes brake back plates I've become a fan of Owatrol oil (spray or hand paint) - Does the job well and you can see through it so you can keep an eye on potential tin worm issues. It was a Landrover enthusiast that got me on to it. Black underseal is usually the worst thing to use - rust just seems to munch/track under it (although I had success painting on top of a clean and oiled surface). Elsewhere inside sections, subframes(after Owatrol outside), sills, door bottoms, front of bonnet etc - Dinitrol is cracking stuff. As an example of how well it works, my wife received a hanging garden ornament which after being out for 1 night in the rain became entirely covered in rust. I simply wiped over this with Owatrol oil and numerous years later still looking free of rust, It even keeps my wife's 1.2 Fiat Panda sump free of rust - and boy do they rust!
  3. Electric power steering as fitted to many recent cars is amp hungry - most car control systems disable power assistance when the engine isn't running. Power steering faults can be logged on many a car when the battery is on it's way out.

  5. I've seen this before on some other models. The cooling system may not be sufficient as standard with some engine sizes as they will have been fitted with smaller radiators/fans etc for the smaller engines. The tow bar prep option could include changes in this specification as well as some electrical mods. Note to self - specify tow bar prep option if possible with any future car - oh and the USB C connector behind the mirror (for dashcam)

  7. I'm just a mere 6ft 4" but I had a similar problem with my Superb II to start with. Resolved by carefully bending the thick "outwires" under the side bolsters downwards and outwards. Now sorted, my future issue may be how on earth will I find something as comfortable when I change cars. One car I'm eyeing is the Audi A4 which has cracking seats for taller drivers. I feel for the OP and others over 6ft 4" - I always have trouble finding cars I'm truly comfortable in, especially as I get older. I'm finding the position and size of B pillars a problem as well - In many cars my right elbow ends up jabbing against it.
  8. Check earthing on the trailer - can cause all sorts of weird issues. Earthing problems very common - especially if trailer has been stored outside.
  9. Re body control module - I've not had a recall letter and mine is a facelift - it's not listed as needing a recall on the gov.uk site either. I wonder if it is because mine is the poverty spec and has filament front indicators (LED rear). Re emissions - Do you still get a 2 year warranty on emissions related components - eg EGR valve - after the diesel emissions update? Just mentioning as some early adopters of this recall made good use of the extra warranty. Clearly this one not relevant for mine as it drinks from the other pump.
  10. I had what I think was the same engine in my old Octavia NA 1.416v which was reasonably economical. Usually well over 40mpg on a run.

  12. 10.41volts after repeated attempts sounds like a dead cell on the battery - New battery time me thinks.
  13. Indeed the higher power EA111 1.4 was a twin charger (turbo + supercharger) - this version was awful on many fronts. In the Skoda range of cars this was only fitted to the mkII Fabia VRS - I think? Lower power EA111 versions were much better but earlier versions could have cam chain/tensioner issues. The 125ps turbo (only!) is the version fitted to the 1.4 mkII Superb. The 1.4 Superb mkIII has the totally different cam belt EA211 engine.
  14. Not AGM - EFB was/is fitted on my stop start. Original was a Moll and the replacement is YUASA 7000 EFB range. Saying that mine is also a tiddly 1.4tsi so probably has a smaller battery. Came with a 4 year guarantee - all in £99.84. Car has not bleated since even if left for many days and love it or hate it stop/start works a treat. Myself I don't mind it as except for a whir of a starter motor you don't really notice it.
  15. I used DM Keith in Hull for my first few years of my car's life for servicing and found them very good and transparent. The brake fluid change is due after the first three years so surely the first MOT is the best time to do this as it will always be at three years old? After three years old for a few years I negotiated a cheaper service plan which was a lower cost for cars older than three years old and included MOT's, brake fluid changes and air conditioning servicing. They always did a good job and there was always evidence of more than an oil change and clean going on - when I was swapping to/from winter wheels you could see evidence of copper slip where brakes had been serviced etc. OK more expensive than my local independent, but I still found the costs pretty ok. Now my Superb II has got to the age(2014 - 91k miles) that things may need replacing more often I've moved my servicing back to my local Indy. Saying that it's not needed that much thus far.
  16. Do you mean some 1.8 / 2.0 tsi engines have problems? My 1.4tsi Superb uses hardly any oil at 91k miles. Don't really need to top up between services. My son has a 1.2tsi Octavia that burns no oil at all. The 1.8 is well known for this - some do some don't. A friend of mine has a 1.8 tsi Yeti that's OK. I'm afraid this is a potentially expensive repair as it's a major engine rebuild.
  17. The original battery has just been replaced in my 2014 1.4 Superb. After being left for a couple of cold days it was complaining of low battery after I unlocked the car. Mine is a stop/start and a great local independent garage sorted for about £100. One clue - the stop/start operated less and less and not at all in the weeks beforehand.
  18. Hi, You have posted in the Superb MKII forum - not the Octavia III. How cold is it where you are in Sweden? Could be wind chill of the car moving freezing up pipes that thaw out when stopped after a while with the heat from the engine bay - Just a thought.
  19. Even though it's similar, a Passat 1.9pd at this age has a totally different North/South orientation compared to the transverse of the Octavia. The Passat engine would better suit a mk1 Superb! A VW Golf or Seat Leon 1.9pd engine would be much better suited.
  20. I think your car battery is failing which is causing strange issues. One of the clues may be the low voltage message.
  21. i suppose we are saying the same thing - it's the "active" part that is different between diesel and petrol. A diesel "active" regen involves injecting extra fuel on the exhaust stroke whereas the petrol system is different. Diesels can also achieve passive regens when conditions allow (temperature in dpf, oxygen etc)
  22. As far as I know GPF's are all passive regens due to higher combustion temperatures. Injecting more petrol down the exhaust system could have explosive results! However I stand to be corrected - I thought GPF's were much smaller and cheaper because of this. In addition I'm not sure a NA port injection VW UP even has a GPF although a later gti tsi will have as it has direct injection.
  23. My car is a happy bunny again with stop start working well again. it was starting ok before but clearly battery was goosed as starter now spins sooo much faster.
  24. Just had bill - all in £99.84. Mine is only the teeny 1.4 petrol though
