The alternator also contains extra electronics communicating via a LIN bus which is used by the battery management system to control the alternator output voltage. This electronics could be faulty - it wouldn't be the first time a "smart" alternator has failed in this way.

That's SFD not SFD2 - they're quite different.

That extra information changes my view - so it could be the alternator blocking the shared LIN line.

And I was asking how you got VW server access... I see VC Tool provides the ability to use an SFD2 token, but does not generate that token. So the question becomes how do you get the SFD2 token?

I'm intrigued how you got access to the VW servers without ODIS or a dealer? I'm sure the developers of OBDeleven and VCDS would love to know too!

SFD2 is an even more extreme version of module locking that currently can only be unlocked by VAG dealers with online access as no diagnostic tool manufacturers (such as OBDeleven and VCDS) have been allowed access.

Occasional high revs at idle could also be the normal DPF regen happening? Since you can talk to the battery sensor then the alternator is clearly not blocking the shared LIN bus, so I go along with replacing the battery sensor.

IIRC cleaning doesn't remove the ash left behind, when that exceeds a limit then the DPF needs replacing not just cleaning.

I've gone from a 6 speed manual 1.4 Octavia to a 7 speed DSG 1.8 Octavia, The DSG is definitely more relaxing to drive both in town and on long journeys. Finding the 2 gear kickdown (even when not in S mode) has added fun to many roundabout exits. The biggest surprise is that the 1.8DSG actually gives a higher mpg (better economy)than the 1.4 manual.

Just as I expected, any of the service reminder values being "unacceptable" to the instruments software causes exactly this error code.

Nearly every time this error has been reported on the VCDS forum it has been caused by one of the settings in the service reminder section being outside an acceptable range.

Maybe the DPF needs cleaning as it's too clogged for a regen to work?

On the hybrids there is a known problem with the 12V battery not being charged when only short drives in electric only mode are made - is yours a hybrid or fully ICE?

No, more like £150-£200 plus 5 minutes coding the battery management system.

Maybe it's not about ability to charge and/or range anxiety, but more about not being willing to accept being told what you are allowed to buy? I see the typical R-R owner as someone who makes decisions and doesn't take kindly to others telling them what they can or cannot buy...

Plus I've found that some screenwash additives appear to be incompatible with each other and when mixed produce a jelly like gunk that jams the washer jets.
