I think my chainsaw and lawnmower are both going to be staying with E5, despite both being very recent engines. Negligible fuel cost increase. I won't have any worries about the 2003-2005 fleet of cars in the family though, any negative effects seem to me to be likely to be very slow-acting and therefore probably safely ignored.

Strip fuse no.3 in your car I think, unless built very late in 2005, in which case it might be no.5 Check them all!

No, would be my gut feeling, but I'd suggest listening to others' opinions on that as I've no personal experience of any PAS faults. Was it definitely your original rack that you got back?

I think that data clears both charging system and battery from blame. There could still be an issue with cabling/connections between battery and PAS pump, but I suspect a fault with CAN wiring, angle sensor or pump module would be my guesses, prior to fault code reading of the PAS module. The reason I mention CAN wiring is that the PAS has speed sensitivity, and the way the module gets its vehicle speed info is solely via CAN data, as far as I can tell. If these two wires are compromised, I think I'd expect a fault light, but not certain. If they are problematic, a code reader may well come back with 'module unavailable' or similar if you do try to read faults out of it. In VCDS it's module 44, steering assist; not sure how that transfers to other readers.

That article was published 18 months ago. I think we'd have heard a lot more about it in this sub-forum if the Mk1 Fabia was indeed so affected. I suspect an error in the article. If the charging system is functioning well, the battery capacity should be almost irrelevant. Do you have a multimeter with which to check battery volts before and after starting the engine? Don't assume that black means negative, it virtually never does in VW group cars. More often used for ignition 12V, earths are generally brown.

Strip fuse 5, blade fuse 8 and blade fuse 11 are all involved in your car. Yes, if the fans work at low speed they should both come on when those contacts are linked, if everything else is OK. If they don't come on when you link 1 and 2, turn on the ignition (engine running or not, doesn't matter) then link contacts 1 & 3 instead. This should bring both fans on at full speed. Mind fingers/hands!

No. There is no ground connection to this module. How many radiator fans are there, 1 or 2? Which fuses have you checked? Have you tried linking pins 1 and 2 of the radiator thermoswitch loom connector (the contacts either side of the connector latch?
