My 2015 vRS had the door seal issue, where the outer seal lacked drainage holes and trapped water between the inner and outer seals. Some people experienced this to cause the door to retain water, and if your door card membrane/seal is porous I could see this being causative. Popping the door seal off at its forward most point on the underside of the door usually reveals if the door's retaining water. Gaz EDIT: The original thread on door seals;

We've a DQ200 in our 2015 Polo GTI, which has been faultless for the five years we've had it. Also have friends with a 2016 Fabia 1.2 which they've owned from new, with the same DSG, which has been equally faultless. I suspect the early problems from choice of oil pre-dates both these cars. If I was buying a '21 reg car I don't think I'd be worried. Gaz

Since leaving work I've been trying, steadily, to improve my appalling physical fitness. Amongst other things I've been gradually increasing how far I cycle, and reducing how often I use any power assistance. Today I went past the 30 mile in one go milestone, and am feeling pretty good about it 😀: Started at 85% battery, finished at 51% battery. Only power assist I used in the first 15 miles was for about 50' getting quickly across a busy road, and probably the same trying to get up a public footpath on the Downs which was made up of deep and sodden leaf mould (failed, and it was too steep to ride back down). All in all a lovely ride. Gaz

I cycled down a gem of a lane I'd not previously been down just outside of Polegate. As I got to the end of the lane I rounded a corner to find a lovely little church I'd no idea was there: The steepening slope on the right is the South Downs and where I ran out of cyclable surface for my bike. Beautiful area - I'll go back to take some photos of the cracking views over the Downs and Folkington Estate. Gaz

And agreeing with Mac, with the Mk1, I took the opportunity to check the pots, valves, stem seals, followers, crank and big ends, before having the headwork completed. Would've been daft not to! Gaz

It's not really comparable financially, as it was probably 16 years ago our Mk2 Golf's HG went. Repair then was in the region of £500. I bought a Mk1 Golf with a failed HG in 2007. Stripped and rebuilt the engine myself, albeit having the head skimmed locally. Neither the Mk1, nor Mk2 had any HG problems after they were repaired. if a job's worth doing... In my opinion, a simple HG failure and remedial work should not result in failure a few weeks later, unless something was missed (e.g. another problem) or work was not completed properly. 186k miles doesn't necessarily mean the engine's dead, nor any more worn than one with under half that mileage. It depends on how well they've been looked after. Gaz
