In the mid 1990's I supplemented my income by buying cars at auction and selling them on. I bought a BX19GTI mostly because I felt sorry for it, as although in good nick, it was running rough as ar$e oles. Other regular buyers thought I was nuts. While scratching our heads as to what was up with it, a mates Dad, who was a lift engineer, found what we couldn't, and a kink in a small coil spring somewhere on the injection system. Being an 'engineer' he wouldn't replace it, but spent a good while getting the kink out the spring. Popped it back on and hey presto. He bought it off us there and then, and had it for about six years before trading it in for a Moggie Minor project. Superbly comfortable and unique car. Gaz

Looks alright to me for the money. But I'm an armchair expert and nothing beats seeing it in the tin, sitting in it and going for a drive. I've sat in cars I liked and took an instant dislike to them once behind the wheel (Prius and a Mokka), and others I really didn't want to like but found them really rather good (Leaf, new shape Micra). Maybe time for you to go looksy. Gaz

MOT expired 13/03/2022, but the rest of the MOT history looks unremarkable. Ask about what servicing it's had done. Do an HPI check. No heated seats. Has it got a spare wheel? Gaz

Hello Rob I remember having a 1999 Passat (AFN) that could run on other oils because of it's simpler (than the PD's) fuelling system. Did some research, including filtration for chip shop oil, spoke to someone who was actively (and successfully) using other oils, with the same engine as mine. Then I sold it and bought a Saab Aero instead 🙄 so never actually did it. Gaz

Give them a chance to fix it once and for all, and if that doesn't do the trick, reject the car. Perhaps contact Trading Standards (Consumer Direct) for advice and to lodge a record that you were were given a 'repaired' car that was potentially not roadworthy. I had various coolant parts replaced under warranty on my previous vRS. When I picked the car up it didn't make it the two miles home before blowing its turbo. Sh!t happens 🙄 Gaz

Hello Dale Apart from all the sensible checks, there's really not too much to look out for. I had a 220 and loved it. If I were looking now, I'd be very picky about stone chips and alloy damage if they're diamond faced. Service history is important, making sure all that should have happened has, including a DSG service at 40k miles if you're not going for a manual. A spare wheel instead of gunk, and heated seats would be things I'd be looking for. Have a good rummage in the Octavia III forum as there are a few things that recur, which aren't in themselves deal breakers. Some people, myself included had front doors that retained water until the seals were either replaced or perforated. Sawtoothing on the rear tyres comes up from time to time. And on that point, a car with a matching set of good tyres (or at least axle sets) is likely to be a better bet than one with four different ditch finders, but I'm sure you knew that anyway. I'd be quite concerned that they changed the brake fluid last June, but don't have a record of it(!), and use this as a justification for doing it again. Was there a reason said as to why the calliper had to be replaced rather than rebuilt? Agree with both Dave and Pete. I'd be voting with my feet. Gaz
